Dune Gets A Script Writer Fixer

Frank Herbert’s Sci-Fi epic of epics “Dune” is getting a movie redo from the kinda cheesy David Lynch effort from back in the big hair days of 1984. Josh Zetumer has written the new script with Pierre Morel from “From Paris With Love” and “Taken” fame directing. It seems that Pierre is looking to tidy up the existing script and has brought his “Taken” script writer Chase Palmer (his real name) into the fray to inject a little more of Pierre’s sandy vision into “Dune”.

What is “Dune” you ask? It’s probably an unfilmable movie. It’s kind of like “Lawrence of Arabia” meets “Apocalypto”. The book is dense and chock full of witches and wicked battles, religion and ginormous sand worms that either barf or poop a substance that makes you immortal and completely blue eyed. It’s hot on Dune or Arrakis and so expect very scantily clad Sci-Fi females. Sounds good? Fingers crossed. It’s a toughie. Thanks Empire.

    really? the first book has already been made into a movie and a miniseries. each has its merits but the only thing that will make a third version any better than the previous two, in my eyes, is a combination of the thoroughness of the miniseries and the sickness of the 1984 release. HR Gigher’s (spelling?) involvement in only a couple aspects of the 1984 release bring much to the atmosphere overall.

    I’ll be the Dune dork here. If they were Fremen women then they would be wearing their stillsuits. You can’t spare a drop of moisture on Dune which means fully covered. Hope the movie comes out soon

    @ Justin- excellent point, but the Harkonnen were very much into their (sex) slaves. I expect this production would probably play up that aspect.

    @Bruce- I feel your pain. I love the sh!t outta FH’s Dune series, but his writing is way too clever to ever translate into film properly without being exceedingly wtf-y or boring. A big part of it explaining why, exactly, humans live in such a socially gridlocked universe 10K+ years in the future with no computers, robots, or typical scifi trappings. A vague “Butlerian Jihad” (which Herbert himself never fully articulates) already ancient at the time of the narrative won’t win many hearts.

    I do, however, hold out hope that an outstanding animated version will eventually come to light. Something like A Scanner Darkly, stylewise.
