Doug Liman’s Moon Movie Gets New Writer

Sci-Fi Movie News, Untitle Doug Liman Moon Movie — By Nix on June 9, 2008 |

There isn’t even a title for “Jumper” director Doug Liman’s (pictured, left) new movie about moon colonization, set to star Jake Gyllenhaal, but already a new writer has been brought onboard to re-write a script originally by Liman, Simon Kinberg, John Hamburg, and Mark Bowden (of “Black Hawk Down” fame). The new writer is Dan Mazeau, who Dreamworks has tapped to rewrite Liman’s script with, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a “new take”.

THR has more:

Up-and-coming scribe Dan Mazeau has been hired to redraft the action film about lunar colonization that is slated to star Jake Gyllenhaal. Doug Liman, who will direct the film, wrote an original screenplay with John Hamburg (”Along Came Polly”). “Black Hawk Down” author Mark Bowden revamped that script.

Now Mazeau is on board to try to bring it in for a landing with a different take “based on an original story by Liman, Bowden and Simon Kinberg,” according to the studio.

Doug Liman is not exactly an unknown name, so to have Dreamworks bring in a completely new writer to rewrite his script, they must have really hated Liman’s script. If that’s the case, how long before Liman jumps ship? I don’t see him staying on to direct a movie that has essentially been taken away from his creative control. Unless, of course, he plans on rewriting it anyway during production, which happens all the time.

Dan Mazeau’s last film credit was a draft for a live-action version of “Jonny Quest”, and before that, he sold a spec script called “Land of Lost Things”.
