I’m not sure if it was the lack of other good films out this weekend or the fact that “District 9″ was really good that jumped D9 to the top of the charts this weekend. I’ll take the positive view and say that movie watchers had finally become numb to the craptacular fare we’ve been suffering through lately and saw to it that an intelligent and well made Sci-Fi got its due.
“District 9″ cost 30 million to make and earned 37 million in one weekend making it an obvious success. I imagine it’ll see 100 million in total before all is said and done. Neill Blomkamp, the director and co-writer of D9 must be smiling very broadly today. Success like the kind D9 is having will greenlight other risky subject Sci-Fi films in the near future that might not otherwise have been made. Thanks Variety for the numbers.
