Comic-Con ’09: Stargate Universe Trailer

“Good God, everybody’s having sex on this show.” That was my reaction about halfway into the new trailer for Stargate Universe that is being shown at Comic-Con ’09. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that this is the same trailer the Stargate Universe panel will also be showing. The trailer runs pretty long, and gives you a good idea of how they’re approaching the show. I must admit, there are parts of it that looked better than I had anticipated (I like the flying orb-camera they discover, which allows them to dictate their thoughts like they’re on a reality show or something) though there are other parts where my original fears that this is little more than a bad attempt to turn the Stargate franchise into a Battlestar Galactica clone seemed, well, justified.

There appears to be lots of military vs. civilian conflicts, and boy, Robert Carlyle’s Dr. Nicholas Rush sure comes across like a carbon copy of Gaius Baltar from BSG — brilliant, smarmy, and more than a little self-absorbed. I doubt anyone is going to be a fan of this guy. The writers may call his character “complex” and “real”, but from everything I’ve seen, the guy just comes across as a dick.

Other thoughts: Justin Louis’ Colonel Everett Young appears to be the male lead of the show. The Ancient ship they land on kinda looks like a Klingon Bird of Prey from the back. Also, did I mention people seems to be having lots of sex on the show? I mean, there is about 30 seconds of the trailer where they showed nothing but people getting it on. I gotta say, this incarnation of Stargate Universe may NOT be for the kiddies, kiddies.

Also, Richard Dean Andereson shows up in the trailers, though I’m not sure how big of a role it is. He has a conversation with one of the characters and then is not seen again.

What the hell ever happend to :-
    a) watching a program before tearing it to pieces.
    b) giving a show a chance to develope.

Star Trek TNG and DS9, SG1, Babylon 5 and Farscape all had truly awful first seasons and are all shows that ,in this age of whining viewers expexcting too much, would never have made it.
It takes time to develope story arcs and characters so hey here's a crazy idea how about we stop slamming the program before they have even aired it.

After all how many Firefly fans regret not getting behind the show earlier??

Um, how is anything I’ve written above “tearing it to pieces”? And if you thought Farscape’s first season was “truly awful”, I don’t know what to tell ya, buddy.

Ok I will agree to disagree about farscape but you get the point I was trying to make.rnI will also agree that I wasnt very clear when I was talking about tearing it to pieces I was referring to general coment about the show. you must admit it is getting a very negative reaction in the press.rnrn”my original fears that this is little more than a bad attempt to turn the Stargate franchise into a Battlestar Galactica clone seemed, well, justified.”rnrnandrnrn”but from everything Iu2019ve seen, the guy just comes across as a dick.”rnrnare ,in my opinion ,two very negative comments considering this is a very short article based on a trailer.

Yes, but keep in mind I’m reviewing the trailer. From everything I’ve seen of the trailer, it’s very BSG-ish. There’s no mistake about it — despite all the reports that seem to confirm this, the visuals itself are very BSG-inspired. That is a statement of fact.rnrnThe trailer really did give the impression that Carlyle’s character is a bit of a dick. That may be negative, but that’s the impression the trailer gave.
