NBC kept wanting to cancel it, but for some reason kept bringing it back. And there is obviously a loud and vocal fanbase out there, albeit not enough of them to tune in on a regular basis to keep the show’s head above water year in and year out. (Kinda like Whedon fans, actually.) Now in its third season (after, once again, barely surviving cancellation), “Chuck” seems to have paid back NBC’s loyalty with its recent two-hour premiere over the weekend, which scored the show’s highest ratings since a 3D episode last year.
The first episode of “Chuck” Season 3 brought in 7.7 million viewers, while the second block kept most of that number, totalling 7.2 million viewers. That’s the show’s best number in a while, and is up 21% percent from the show’s average from last year. Of course, this was the long-awaited premiere, and season premieres tend to do well, especially after last year’s “I know kung fu” cliffhanger which, I have to admit, intrigued even I, a non-fan.
Don’t get me wrong, I saw “Chuck” when it first premiered a while back, and while it seemed to have potential, the hook wasn’t strong enough to keep me coming back. Last night I watched the premiere and realized the show is definitely an acquired taste. The girl is definitely hot, but as blasphemous as this may sound, she might just be the weakest link in the whole show. Granted, the idea of a Best Buy-type Geek Squad guy becoming a spy is filled with potential, but overall, the show came across as way too camp for me. Then again, who knows, maybe that’s the point.
