Two major news from the world of sci-fi movie development today. The first has that “Escape from New York” movie being dropped from New Line. The studio, with Warner Bros. have decided not to remake the film, so now it’ll be up to someone else to bring Snake Plissken back to the big screen. Breck Eisner was recently attached to direct. Meanwhile, that “Voltron” live-action movie has new life again. Here’s the press release: Relativity Media’s President of Worldwide Production Tucker Tooley announced today the studio has optioned the feature film rights for Voltron™ from World Event Productions, and will adapt the live-action big screen version from the 1984 cult-classic animated series Voltron: Defender of the Universe™. The project was brought to Relativity through their deal with Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, whose company will shepherd the project. In Voltron™, an elite battle force defends the fate of mankind in the spectacular action adventure. Five young warriors are [...]

Normally I would go all pessimistic on you and tell you that there’s no way anyone will ever get a “Voltron” movie up and running, not with the cost and complexity involved in making giant robot lions look real onscreen. Then again, that was before Michael Bay did not one, not two, but three “Transformers” movies. Now all I’m thinking is: “What’s taking them so damn long?” After a lot of fits and starts and more fits followed by even more starts, it looks like a “Voltron” movie is closer to being reality than before, if this report by Vulture is to be believed. According to the site, there is a bidding war currently going on by various studios to fund the movie. Yes, people are fighting each other to win the privilege of funding a “Voltron” movie with rights holders World Events Productions. Now if that isn’t good news, I don’t know what is. Until someone gets the movie [...]

Who knows at this point, but someone thought it had enough of a chance to hire two “hot” screenwriters and commissioned these concept artwork for a possible “Voltron” live-action movie.
The boys at Coming Attractions got the chance to visit World Event Productions, the home office of the “Voltron” movie, and came away with some news about the upcoming film. In short, it’s still in development, but there have been some major changes since last we heard. Most important of all is the news that the script by writer Justin Marks, which is set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, is no longer in play, and the movie is officially in “reboot” mode in terms of development. Also, director Max Makowski, who was recently attached to direct, is no longer onboard. Along with those news, there are still no cast attached, which is not surprising given that, well, they’re back to square one. So what does all this mean? Mainly that a “Voltron” movie probably won’t be set on a post-apocalyptic Earth as originally thought, and it’s going to take another couple of years for any further movement. So where now? I [...]

What are the chances that we’ll actually see a live-action “Voltron” movie on the big screen anytime soon? I can’t see it actually happening. Mind you, I’m all for it, and I think it could really work, but I don’t know if the franchise has enough name-recognition among Joblo ala “Transformers” to justify the potentially huge cost of a big sci-fi movie about five giant robot lions that transforms into an even bigger, giant robot guy. I just don’t see it ever happening. At least, not as a live-action movie. The last time we heard about “Voltron”, notable producers including Charles Roven of “The Dark Knight” fame had come onboard to give moving the movie idea forward a shot. They are now looking for a writer to work on a story from the ground up, apparently having ditched the post-apocalyptic/post-alien invasion storyline? THR now reports that talent agency UTA has come onboard the “Voltron” train and plans to expand the [...]

The last time we heard about any movement on the “Voltron” live-action movie, it was August 2008, when we heard from a movie site that the film might have landed a director. Well that hasn’t really been confirmed by the trades, and judging by the fact that we haven’t heard a peep from a “Voltron” movie since probably means that rumor was just that, a rumor that didn’t come to pass. So what’s the latest word from Hollywood? Movement, it would appear. This latest news is a little bit more solid, in that it comes from an industry blog and not just another random movie site. According to THR’s Risky Biz Blog, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven, Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander are ready to take “Voltron” and push the film into production. Or at least, push it out of development hell where it currently resides, and has been for the last few years over at the Mark Gordon Company. “Voltron” [...]

Max Makowski. What? Who? Who the hell is Max Makowski? He’s the guy who is going to be directing the “Voltron” live-action big-screen movie, that’s who. At least, according to the guys over at Latino Review, who have been right on this Voltron stuff all along, so I’m definitely not saying they might even be wrong here. Okay, so Max Makowski is going to direct the “Voltron” movie, which is already moving forward, with the studio planning to shoot it ala Zack Snyder’s “300″ — i.e. tons and tons of green screen work. Which is fine with me. I don’t think they could have possibly made this thing on practical effects, not with the sheer amount of effects they would need for all the giant robot lions and especially when they form the big robot guy. Here’s Latino Review with more on the previously unknown Max Makowski: Max Makowski was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil but has lived all [...]

Still holding your breath for a live-action Voltron movie? Well you’re going to have to keep waiting, because it doesn’t look like the movie is anywhere closer to becoming reality, what with news that New Regency has recently put the film, the full title of which is “Voltron: Defender of the Universe” into turnaround. Everyone involved still plans to get the movie made, but the budget isn’t there, and if anything, the budget may get slashed before a deal is agreed upon. That, and the Japanese right holders are being fidgety about letting a big Hollywood studio mess with their animal robots. Variety has more on the convoluted details: Relativity would finance and produce the project as part of its one-off picture business and shop it to distributors. In the past, Relativity films have been released by Lionsgate (“3:10 to Yuma”) and Universal (“Mr. Brooks”). Last summer, New Regency picked up the rights to the property, adapted by scribe Justin [...]
