Well okay, SOME people tuned in for Ron Moore’s new sci-fi show on the FOX network called Virtuality, but the ratings aren’t looking good for the show to go to series. As some of you may know, FOX dumped the show as a two-hour movie last week instead of introducing it as an ongoing series. Networks do this all the time, as a form of “back door pilot” — i.e. to gauge interest in the show. If the movie did well, FOX would have certainly given the greenlight for an ongoing TV show. It didn’t, alas, so the chances of Virtuality going to series is slim to none. According to THR, the back-door pilot managed only 1.8 million viewers in its Friday night premiere, pretty much justifying FOX’s lack of faith in the show in the first place. The numbers landed FOX in fourth place for the night, easily beaten by a re-run of “Farrah’s Story” and a Michael Jackson-centric [...]

“Virtuality” is a Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar) produced Fox summer Sci-Fi movie and maybe (fingers crossed) a series. It all depends on how many of us tune in. “Virtuality” describes the insanity aboard the spaceship Phaeton on it’s 10 year journey to Epsilon Eridani. Life aboard the Phaeton is cramped and to avoid space murder, the crew immerses in virtual reality to pass the time and to expand their boundaries. Unfortunately, something sinister has invaded this VR system, causing who knows what mayhem. To add to the fun, everything is getting beamed back to good old Earth as a reality show. As we know, reality shows need artificial drama. Perhaps an evil producer lies behind the Phaeton crews woes? Scifiwire has an interview with Erik Jensen, who plays the ships Engineer, Dr. Jules Braun. Erik sheds some more light on the inner conflicts of the crew and how this all makes Virtuality something we should be watching. A taste: “Even [...]

Can’t get enough of Ron Moore’s Virtuality? You’re in luck. Here are a series of clips from the 2-hour pilot episode, starting with that faux reality TV show opening we posted earlier. As you can probably tell from the clips, this looks like classic Ron Moore — lots of sci-fi elements that look way to Earth-ish to be set on a ship, some testy (i.e. nasty) interpersonal relationships between the characters, and lots of shaky cam for the sake of having lots of shaky cam. If you loved Moore’s Battlestar Galactica, this looks like more of that. If you didn’t care for it, well, you should probably avoid this thing. Twelve-minute long clip below to help you decide. Starring Sienna Guillory, Clea DuVall, Joy Bryant, Jimmi Simpson, James D’Arcy, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Ritchie Coster, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Quinn Lord, Omar Metwally, Gene Farber, Kerry Bishé, Nelson Lee, Erik Jensen, Graeme Duffy, and Sheldon Yamkovy.
Ronald D. Moore of BattleStar fame talks about how his Virtuality pilot, now being aired as a standalone movie on Fox, might still get promoted to a series. Virtuality follows the crew of the starship Phaeton, on a 10 year mission to some airless rock someplace uncomfortable. On the way, to avoid possible space madness in the cramped and therefore realistic Phaeton, the crew resorts to virtual reality to pass the time and to give the illusion of space. However, something nasty has invaded their comfortable virtual dreams, something with an unknown agenda. Imagine being stuck on probably a one way journey to no-place, squashed together with several stinky and stressed out crew mates and having your only means of escape contaminated with a malevolent, something. Sounds awesome to me. Ronald thinks it’s good and if we watch, we might get to see more of it. This movie was meant to be a pilot. So you finished it, handed it [...]

I’m not entirely sure what this means for Ron Moore’s new Fox sci-fi show Virtuality, which is getting its “Fox Movie of the Week Special” premiere on the network on Friday, June 26. Fox is selling this as a standalone 2-hour movie, and in the entire press release that landed in my mailbox, I didn’t see one word about how this is a new TV series from Ron Moore, the guy behind Battlestar Galactica. Anyways, press release and promo images from the show/movie below. THE CREW OF THE PHAETON EMBARKS ON A 10-YEAR JOURNEY THROUGH OUTER SPACE TO SAVE THE EARTH IN THE ORIGINAL SCIENCE-FICTION THRILLER “VIRTUALITY” FRIDAY, JUNE 26, ON FOX Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“New Amsterdam”) stars The crew of the Phaeton is approaching the go/no-go point of their epic 10-year journey through outer space.
BattleStar’s Ronald D. Moore “Virtuality” has a two hour TV premiere coming up on Fox. If it hits big with those Sci-Fi kids everyone is targeting (you know who you are) we might just see it back next year as a regular series. It looks Spacey and nicely twisted. The plot unfolds thusly. The crew of the Phaeton is approaching the go/no-go point of their epic 10-year journey through outer space. With the fate of Earth in their hands, the pressure is intense. The best bet for helping the crew members maintain their sanity is the cutting-edge virtual reality technology installed on the ship. It’s the perfect stress-reliever until they realize a glitch in the system has unleashed a virus on to the ship. Tensions mount as the crew decides how to contain the virus and complete their mission. Meanwhile, their lives are being taped for a reality show back on Earth Virtuality airs as a 2-hour movie on Friday, [...]

With the networks officially kicking off their upfront presentations this month, we’ve now gotten official (and in some cases, semi-official) confirmations about which shows are coming back, which ones are gone, and what new offerings will be available to the genre fans out there. The schedule for the upfronts are: FOX’s begins today, followed by ABC on Tuesday, and CBS on Wednesday. NBC already did theirs earlier this month. THIS LIST WILL BE UPDATED WHEN APPROPRIATE NBC: It was recently confirmed that Chuck will return for a third, albeit shorter season (more info here), while Heroes will also be back for a fourth season. Meanwhile, the fantasy/parallel Earth show Kings is dead in the water, and so is the new Knight Rider despite a lot of tinkering. The net’s supernatural show Medium is also gone from the network, but didn’t stay gone long. It’s now at CBS. New additions include the mind-reading The Listener and the post-apocalyptic Day One. FOX: [...]

On July 4th, Fox will air BattleStar creators Michael Taylor and Ronald D. Moore’s new Sci-Fi series hopeful “Virtuality”. “Virtuality” is about life aboard the Phaeton, mankind’s first starship. Shipboard existence on the Phaeton is apparently pretty realistic. A bunch of people, locked together in a tiny ship on a 10 year journey. To prevent the crew from going Space Crazy like Ren and Stimpy, the crew uses virtual reality to get away from the claustrophobia and burning desire to jam a space widget into the nearest crewman’s back. All is well until something malevalent infects the program controlling those virtual visions of campfires on the beach or ski bunnies in Whistler. Trapped in a tiny tin can, elbow to elbow with smelly spacemen and spacewomen with your only escape an evil horrorshow? Sounds terrific! Like I said, Fox has got the 2 hour extravaganza on July 4th at 8:00 EST. The cast includes Clea DuVall, Erik Jensen, Gene Farber, [...]

Uber sci-fi TV producer Ron Moore recently spilled more details about his upcoming Virtuality, his new sci-fi show for FOX, that would star former New Amsterdam leading man Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The pilot, set to be directed by “Hancock’s” Peter Berg, is set to shoot at the end of next month, according to Moore, who also promises that this will be very “different” from his stint on Battlestar Galactica. So, uh, Ron, I won’t have to run to the showers after every episode? Fabulous! Moore says more to Sci Fi Wire: “The public and private consortium that put this mission together gave the astronauts virtual-reality headsets that allow them to relax … in their off hours, and, sure enough, things start going wrong, and they start wondering what’s really going on, and certain strange mysteries start occurring,” Moore said. “And yet these people are isolated and trapped, just with each other, a very, very long way from home and beyond anyone’s [...]

One of the suckiest thing about the FOX network is that, unless a show is a bona fide hit, they’ll shut it down faster than you can say, “Stupid FOX, why don’t you at least give it a chance first?” Case in point: New Amsterdam, starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as an immortal cop. Sure, the show was probably too procedural, but overall it was a fresh take on an old, stale formula (the cop show), and deserved a chance. Well in any case, while Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is no longer on New Amsterdam, he has landed at another FOX sci-fi show, this time Virtuality. Oh damn, another FOX show? Crap. More from seat42f, who breaks the news: This just in from a source at FOX. They may have canceled New Amsterdam but series star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is staying put at Fox booking the pilot for Virtuality. Coster-Waldau will play Commander Frank Pike.
Ron Moore’s virtual-reality-gone-amok new space show Virtuality has nabbed its leading man in actor James D’Arcy, a mostly British TV actor who has had a couple of big movies, including “Master and Commander” with Russell Crowe and last year’s “Rise” with Lucy Liu. Virtuality, for FOX, is being described as a “back door pilot” — that is, FOX will foot the bill for a 2-hour movie, and if the movie does well, then they’ll make a TV series out of it. If not, they’ll write it off as a loss and move on. The Hollywood Reporter has more on the casting: The sci-fi project, to be directed by Peter Berg, is set aboard the Phaeton, Earth’s first starship, on a 10-year journey to explore a distant solar system.
