And the guy who destroyed New York in “Cloverfield” and moved some vampires next door to you in “Let Me In” is going to direct it. Universal, which gave the project to Reeves, is trying to sell the film as being different from John Carpenter’s 1988 original “They Live”, and they’re probably even going to call it something completely different. But let’s face it, it’s a remake regardless of what they call it, since Carpenter’s film was essentially based on Ray Nelson’s “8 O’Clock in the Morning” as well. “I saw an opportunity to do a movie that was very point-of-view driven, a psychological science fiction thriller that explores this guy’s nightmare,” Reeves told me. “There could be a desperate love story at the center of this. Carpenter took a satirical view of the material and the larger political implication that we’re being controlled. I am very drawn to the emotional side, the nightmare experience with the paranoia of Invasion [...]

Haven’t heard anything on a remake of John Carpenter’s classic alien invasion movie “They Live” in a while, but i09 recently cornered producer Eric Newman and got us an update. Newman is also the producer on the upcoming “The Thing” remake/prequel, another John Carpenter film, and he’s tapped into all things Carpenter remake-related. Says Newman on the progress of the “They Live” remake: Yes. We’ve talked about They Live. And we’ve been developing something sort of in the They Live space. I’m hoping that’s something we can get into next year. As soon as we finish. We go right into Immortal then Man With the Iron Fist. So we’re trying to figure out where in the schedule it’s going to go. We’re hoping next summer. It would be a great movie to make. We’re discussing that. I’d like to say that really, a vagrant wandering around the streets could get you to try on his sunglasses, if he would leave [...]

If Universal Studios and Strike Entertainment get their way, John Carpenter’s tale of alien invasion gone kooky, the Rowdy Roddy Piper starrer “They Live” will see the light of day once more — as a remake. Yup. A remake? Why even remake it in the first place? I have no idea, but apparently it just seems like the thing to do in creativity-bankrupt Hollywood nowadays. Unless, of course, the rights holder refuses to sell the remake rights, but of course there’s as much chance of that happening as of me going to Hollywood and becoming the next International sex symbol. And so — they’re remaking “They Live”. Shit. THR breaks down the original: The original film, part sci-fi thriller and part social satire, told the story of a down-on-his-luck construction worker (Roddy Piper) who discovers glasses that let him see aliens walking among us and controlling humanity. The man races against the clock to find a way to stop them. [...]
