I’ll leave it to you to decide if that’s a good or a bad thing. Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. New images from the prequel below. Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks cute as all heck, but the movie doesn’t look that great. The clip, in particular, screams generic cheese.
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, otherwise known as the famous Mr. Eko on LOST, has joined the team and is heading into the frozen wastes of The Thing prequel. He plays Derek Jameson, pilot and soon to be Thing food, or destroyer? In the casting call, Derek was described thusly, [DEREK JAMESON] In his early 30s, African American, well-built, he is Carter’s friend and co-pilot. This is Jameson’s last season in Antarctica. He’s moving to Florida and starting a jetboat business with his brother, a former big league prospect. The trip to Thule Station is just another flight for him, another day in the countdown before he leaves the South Pole. Trapped at the site with Carter when the helicopter malfunctions, Jameson eventually falls prey to the THING. I love Mr. Agbaje and his character on LOST was one of my favorites. I had heard that he was booted from the show because of his, ah, temperament issues, but perhaps he’s got that [...]

Following up a classic movie that basically got everything right is no easy task. In this case, John Carpenter’s “The Thing” was a Sci Fi/Horror frozen treat, jam packed with sweet bloody carnage, morphy alien madness and starring one of cinemas premiere bad-asses in the bearded form of Kurt Russell. Eric Heisserer, the screenwriter for the upcoming prequel, now being filmed on location in the original Great White North, sat down with the Io9 folks to discuss how they were most definitely not going to screw this one up. On whether flashbacks will be used to totally ruin the movie, I’ve read two conflicting reports on the plot of the film, one might be just be from very early on in the planning stages of your rewrite, I’m a little confused and hopefully you can solve this for me. I read one plot synopsis that said the film was completely from the Norwegians’ point of view, on their base, pre-burn [...]

In the better to have not made it then to screw it up category, we continue our ongoing coverage of “The Thing” prequel with some icey Norwegian Antarctic base pictures. Not much to elaborate on besides the fact that, as a Canadian and an expert on cold, it looks legit. “The Thing” stars Joel Edgerton, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and is being directed by Matthijs van Heijningen with a cast of a thousand awesome Norwegians. Of course the original, starring Kurt Russell and directed by John Carpenter, is a gigantic Sci-Fi/Horror classic. The pic looks like what the original Norwegian base looked like. First in the bunch is the new pic, followed by the original Things camp pics. All via the kindly gnomes at Slashfilm.

The original “The Thing”, starring absolute bad-ass Kurt Russell, was one of my favorite movies of all time. We had paranoia inducing Antarctic isolation, people teetering on the verge of insanity, big bushy beards and that was before the shape changing, human hunting, dog imitating creature from the frozen flying saucer arrived. Universal is about to let loose the filming of the prequel to “The Thing”, capturing the horrors experienced by those crazy Norwegians that discovered, or set free, the first Thing. This effort is going for an authentic feel, filming the Norwegians speaking in Norwegian, with English subtitles of course. This is interesting. I’m kind of on the fence. First a word on the look and feel according to Marc Abraham, producer. (via The L.A. Times) That’s the story we tell in this film,” says Marc Abraham, who is producing the movie with his Strike Entertainment partner Eric Newman. “We go back to that original Norwegian camp and try to figure out [...]

By now you already know more about the upcoming “The Thing” sequel (or prequel, actually) then you may have wanted to know, but you may be wondering about who will be fronting the film. Kurt Russell is certainly nowhere to be found, but in his stead you’ll get Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton as the film’s two young leads. THR reports that Winstead will play the film’s female lead, an American PHD braniac (named Kate Lloyd) who joins a Norwegian expedition in Antarctica after they locate the alien ship trapped in ice. Edgerton is the blue-collar helicopter pilot (named Sam Carter) who helps out our cute as a button research genius when the alien gets free and starts offing Norwegians. If you saw “Final Destination 3″ you probably realized that Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been headed toward fame for a while now. She was Bruce Willis’s daughter in “Live Free or Die Hard”, and she’s got the female lead [...]

John Carpenter’s “The Thing” was a gruesome work of Sci-Fi/Horror art. Think Ridley Scott’s “Alien” but with ice, isolation, paranoia and a nasty shapeshifting beastie with big teeth. It was wonderful. “The Thing” had a great cast too with Kurt Russell leading the lot in his cool way to their eventual doom. A sequel has been in the works for some time and filming is about to get underway directed by Matthijs Van Heijningen based on a script from Eric Heisserer. I say sequel but what’s really planned here is a story set before the events of the first film, detailing the chaos and mayhem that ensued at the Norwegian camp where the alien spaceship was first dug up out of the Antarctic ice. Spoiler TV (via /Film) has a pretty good breakdown of the lead characters. Here’s the skinny. [KATE LLOYD] In her late 20s to early 30s, pretty, bright-eyed, intelligent, she’s a graduate of Columbia and a Ph.D. [...]
