NBC’s canceled “The Listener” starred Craig Olejnik as a telepathic paramedic who uses his gift to solve crimes. That’s a nifty little premise, but I never got around to watching it, and apparently neither did anyone else. I never knew when NBC was showing the show, so it just flew by its first season and was summarily canceled when not enough people tuned in. The Peacock network may not have had any faith in the show, but the Canadians think otherwise.
Variety reports that “The Listener” has received a 13-episode Season 2 order from Canada’s CTV network and its sister sci-fi/fantasy cable channel Space, while Fox International will handle the show’s international distribution.
Ratings for the show in the States were abysmal, but like all genre shows, I’m sure there are fans in the States hoping for a U.S. channel to pick up its second season. According to Shaftesbury chairman-CEO Christina Jennings, whose company produces “The Listener”, they’ll concentrate on producing [...]

With the networks officially kicking off their upfront presentations this month, we’ve now gotten official (and in some cases, semi-official) confirmations about which shows are coming back, which ones are gone, and what new offerings will be available to the genre fans out there. The schedule for the upfronts are: FOX’s begins today, followed by ABC on Tuesday, and CBS on Wednesday. NBC already did theirs earlier this month.
THIS LIST WILL BE UPDATED WHEN APPROPRIATE
NBC:
It was recently confirmed that Chuck will return for a third, albeit shorter season (more info here), while Heroes will also be back for a fourth season. Meanwhile, the fantasy/parallel Earth show Kings is dead in the water, and so is the new Knight Rider despite a lot of tinkering. The net’s supernatural show Medium is also gone from the network, but didn’t stay gone long. It’s now at CBS.
New additions include the mind-reading The Listener and the post-apocalyptic Day One.
FOX:
The surprise news this weekend was [...]

In NBC’s new show The Listener, a young paramedic discovers he has telepathic powers, and instead of using it to easedrop on his neighbors or hit on that very hot blonde woman at the bar, he decides to use his powers for good and, one presumes, solve crimes and what have you. I would have used it to pick up the hot blonde at the bar first, then solve crimes, but that’s just me.
“The Listener” centers on Toby Logan (Craig Olejnik, “The Timekeeper”), a 25-year-old paramedic who has a big secret — he’s a telepath. Until now, Toby kept his ability hidden, exploring its possibilities only with his long time mentor and confidant, Dr. Ray Mercer (Colm Feore, “24: Redemption”). As he makes the rounds with his energetic paramedic partner — “Oz” Bey (Ennis Esmer, “Young People F*#king”), “The Listener” follows Toby as he tries to help people in crisis, and in the process, unravel the truth about his past.
NBC just announced their Summer lineup of shows. One Sci-Fi that was picked up seems interesting. A show about a telepathic paramedic.
While his professional life is in check, Toby’s personal life could use its own rescue. And with the help of Detective Charlie Marks (Lisa Marcos, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”) and his E.R. doctor/ex-girlfriend Olivia Fawcett (Mylène Dinh-Robic, “Da Vinci’s City Hall”), Toby realizes his gift can help others.
