Following up on our earlier report about Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games” trilogy of young adult novels heading to the big screen courtesy of Lionsgate, here’s an official press release from the company about the acquisition and their plans for it.
From Lionsgate:
SANTA MONICA, CA (March 17, 2009) – LIONSGATE® (NYSE: LGF), the leading next generation studio, announced today that it has acquired worldwide distribution rights to the film version of Suzanne Collins’ best selling futuristic young adult novel THE HUNGER GAMES. Collins will adapt the screenplay from her novel, the first in a trilogy. Nina Jacobson is producing through her Color Force shingle. The announcement was made by Joe Drake, Lionsgate President, Motion Picture Group, and Co-Chief Operating Officer.
“The Hunger Games” was published by Scholastic last year, and has been singled out for raves by “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer. The trilogy’s eagerly anticipated second installment, “Catching Fire,” is due out September 1, 2009.

Franchise-ready young adult book series are all the rage nowadays, with your “Twilight” and your “Harry Potters” and a sea of others. The latest kid-friendly series to get the big-screen treatment (and if all goes well, a movie franchise) is “The Hunger Games”, a novel by author Suzanne Collins set in a dystopian future where kids are forced to battle to the death. Sounds like fun times to me!
THR has more on the novels:
The Scholastic novel, which is the first in a planned trilogy, imagines a dystopian future (is there any other kind?) where North America has been divided into 12 oppressed districts, each of which is forced to send tribute in the form of a boy and a girl to compete in a televised battle to the death once a year. Released last year, the book had gained modest popularity until Stephen King and “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer publicly gave it kudos, propelling it onto best-seller lists.

Although billed as a young adult book, Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, sounds like and frankly reads like, a plenty grownup story to me. Coming soon from Nina Jacobson and her company Color Force.
Hailed by Stephen King, it tells the story of a competition in a dystopian world where geographical regions must send representitives to fight to the death. This is all televised of course in the gladiator/running man format. I’m not sure that’s kids stuff.
Further to this rant, I finished Neil Gaimen’s Graveyard Book recently (loved it). The Graveyard Book was sold in the kids section at my local giant bookstore warehouse. I don’t think the Graveyard book is even remotely for kids. Anyway, that’s my rant for today. Via BloodyDisgusting.
