Science Fiction movies that you can remember for more then a couple of years are rare. A movie will attract your attention as it is hyped, entertain you moderately at the theatre and then pass into the general cloud of Sci-Fi history. Maybe you pick up the DVD in 8 months or if it was a bomb, a couple. For me, “Pitch Black”, starring Vin Diesel, was different.
“Pitch Black” has stayed with me. My memory of that movie even survived a less than stellar sequel called “The Chronicles of Riddick”. Pitch Black tells the story of a very laid back and confident hard core criminal( Riddick) being transported along with other travelers to someplace far, far away. On the way they crash on a world not well designed for visitors.
The character of Riddick as portrayed by Vin Diesel is special. He deserves another chance. Luckily, movies starring Vin have been doing decently of late and that means that we have [...]

“Pitch Black”, starring Vin Diesel, was a great Sci-Fi creature feature. Looking back on it, it really had everything going for it. A great group of creatures with a believable ecology, interesting characters that provided suspenseful elements all by themselves and great action with delicious scary bits. Drawing all the elements together was Vin Diesel as Riddick, an interstellar badass from a really bad neighborhood.
The second film in the series, “The Chronicles of Riddick”, was an ambitious failure, although I liked it personally. Riddick was a kind of dark and twisted, religious space opera that made me sit up and pay attention.
So we’ve been waiting for more. Was Pitch Black a fluke? Can David Twohy and good old Vin make the magic work again? In a recent interview with Shock Til You Drop, Mr. Twohy spoke about his hopes for the continuing of the series in the Pitch Black style.
“The third movie would be more modestly-scaled and it would probably feel [...]

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, and you won’t convince me otherwise: as much as I liked how ambitious Diesel and Twohy got with “The Chronicles of Riddick”, the whole Necromonger and Underverse plot was way too unwieldy, and really bogged the movie down in unnecessary subplots and exposition. So here’s the good news and bad news: Diesel says there will be two more Riddick sequels, but both will follow the plot of “Chronicles”, i.e. more Underverse mumbo jumbo.
Diesel tells MTV (who apparently have writers who don’t do name checks, because they spelled “Riddick” director David Twohy’s last name wrong twice in the article):
“There will be long scenes and long portions, full acts of just Riddick against the beasts — or creatures — isolated, which will be very compelling,” Diesel told MTV News. “How that’s interwoven with the mythology set forth in ‘Chronicles of Riddick’ is what we’re waiting for from David [Twohy], who’s almost done [...]

Vin Diesel will apparently return to the darkness that he loves so much in the next “Riddick” movie.
Io9 has a brief plot teaser that shows Riddick returning to the close in, claustrophobic action that made Pitch Black a great Sci-Fi film. The new Riddick, like the original, likes the dark for the work he’s best at.
The Goods.
[Edit]
IESB is hearing the new Riddick film will be more down and dirty with less “fantasy epic stuff” to deal with. A bounty hunter/space pirate type of story line is expected.
The film will have a capped budget of around $35 million.
Expect an official announcement about the new film after FAST & FURIOUS opens big on April 3.
Subterranean prisons, dark, narrow spaceship corridors echoing with the sounds of arcane machinery and the muffled screams of Riddick’s victims. A winning formula.

Mr. Diesel is pretty wise to keep pushing his Riddick and Pitch Black franchises. He had something very special in the first movie of the series. I will eagerly return to another effort if Vin and Company go back to the roots of that original story.
Of course, no good Sci-Fi movie is without a video game and Vin, to his credit, has made sure that the Riddick games aren’t the garbage that usually comes out to accompany a movie release. SciFiWire has a interview up on Vin’s passion for games and what we can expect in the future.

Along with the Nix unit, our fearless leader, I am also a huge fan of Pitch Black, starring our reflective eyed hero Mr. Riddick. One of the best Sci-Fi actioners ever in my humble opinion. Vin is seeing something of a resurgence lately and that is good news for those of us who love the Sci-FI monster stuff.
Vin had this to say about hobbits. Just read the quote.
“There is a scaled down portion of this that goes back to the Pitch Black style of telling the story,” Diesel said in a group interview in Hollywood, where he was promoting Fast & Furious. “It’s hot.”
“Well, you remember when I had talked about Riddick, I talked about Riddick as being the Fellowship in the Tolkien [Lord of the Rings] series. So I was using Pitch Black as Hobbit, as the independent story that introduces you to the world of Middle-earth, and then taking The Chronicles of Riddick and treating it as a [...]

Vin Diesel’s second Riddick game, “Assault on Dark Athena” gets released April 7, which means the man himself is doing the publicity rounds to sell it. It also means we’ll be hearing more about a possible “Chronicles of Riddick” movie, being that the game is so heavily tied into the movie franchise. According to Diesel himself, the third film in the series is very much “underway”, and one gets the feeling he’s prepared to make an official announcement sometime very soon.
Here’s Diesel’s response to a question about the “Chronicles of Riddick” sequel by Gamespot:
Maybe we’re too tight-lipped about the next Chronicles of Riddick film, and I think circa the release of [Dark Athena] that’s probably when you’ll start hearing more about the next Riddick film. It is underway and I almost think it’s a coincidence that we haven’t heard anything, that there hasn’t been a lot of public stuff on the Riddick movie.
So yeah, it definitely looks like another “Chronicles [...]

“Pitch Black” was brilliant, but “The Chronicles of Riddick” was too big and unwieldy and too ambitious. But as a straight sci-fi action film, it was still pretty good. So what about those two “Chronicles of Riddick” sequels we’ve been hearing about? You know, the final two parts of that trilogy star Vin Diesel and writer/director David Twohy have been dying to make?
They’re probably dead, but today via CinemaBlend, game designer Ian Stevens gives us hope that they’re not completely buried:
Over at TheGameReviews.com, they’ve been talking to Ian Stevens, one of the developers of the Chronicles of Riddick videogames. During their conversation he dropped this brief, offhand comment: “new Riddick films are in the works”.
Yeah, unfortunately it’s pretty much an offhand comment that one can’t really take too seriously. Maybe he heard it was official, or maybe he heard someone mention it in the hallway one day. Who knows. But man, I sure would have liked to see a couple [...]

Looking back at Vin Diesel and David Twohy’s 2004 sci-fi epic “The Chronicles of Riddick”, I think most people don’t realize how complex and ambitious the movie was. And maybe that was the problem. It was just so massive, and on such a huge compass, with so many things it wanted to tell, that it sort of had audiences running for the hills instead of trying to digest it all. But I loved it, even though I thought its one big failure was just that — it was just too darn complex and expansive for an average movie crowd. So what about a sequel? Well it’s been 4 years, and we haven’t gotten one yet.
But that doesn’t mean we won’t get one. The last time David Twohy talked about the Riddick franchise, he was talking about going back to a smaller movie, similar to what they did with “Pitch Black”, which introduced the Riddick character. He probably didn’t talk to [...]
