Bruce Willis’ “Surrogates” may have had a good idea going in, but the result is … middling. To be sure, as with any big-budget sci-fi film, it’s enjoyable enough on a base level, but this isn’t a movie that people will be using to salute Bruce Willis when the “Die Hard” star signs off to visit that Big Hollywood Sky. It’s a vanilla effort, disappointingly so given all the talent (not to mention money) involved. Jonathan Mostow is a good director with a knack for action, but his work here feels restrained and muted. I’m not sure how much of the idea survived from the script by Michael Ferris and John D. Bracato, or from the original source material, a comic book by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, but what’s left is average at best, not-even-trying at worst.

Unfortunately for sci-fi fans, neither film lived up to expectations, which is the nice way of saying they both stunk up the joint.

Apparently it’s all based on real science, though instead of looking like Bruce Willis or Rosamund Pike, the best you can hope for at the moment is looking like a skinny robot with your face plastered on a video. But hey, at least it won’t try to kill you, which is always a good thing.

Don’t ignore this movie, folks, Jonathan Mostow is a damn fine action director (I still think his “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” is very underrated) and anything with Willis carrying a gun and running around trying to save the world has always been worthy of an admissions ticket. Plus, it’s got Radha Mitchell, who is always good in sci-fi stuff, and of course, Rosamund Pike is easy on the eyes.

A spiffy new (and I have to say, very Battlestar Galactica-esque) poster for Bruce Willis’ sci-fi actioner “Surrogates”. There’s also an equally spiffy viral site for the film via Virtual Self Industries. Looking at the faux site, it reminds me that movie studios just have way too much money on their hands that they can throw up these kinds of flashy and expensive “most people won’t even know it exists” sites and not think twice about it. And people wonder why Hollywood movies cost millions to make. But I digress.

I’ve been interested in Bruce Willis’ sci-fi movie “Surrogates” the first time I heard about it. It doesn’t just star Willis in a familiar action role (Willis + action almost always guarantees an entertaining movie) but it’s being directed by Jonathan Mostow, who last directed the underrated “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”, which I thought was actually pretty good. Not “T2″ good, mind you, but a pretty good sci-fi action movie. “Surrogates” star Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, James Francis Ginty, Boris Kodjoe and Ving Rhames.
