So what’s the deal on those “Stargate: SG1″ and “Stargate: Atlantis” movies that we were promised a while back, before “Stargate: Universe” became a hit for SyFy? According to producer Brad Wright, it was a combination of many things — MGM’s current money woes, the DVD market not being what it once was, and just pure bad timing. Via TVDeathRay: The only thing that is blocking the SG-1 movie or the Atlantis movie, the only thing, is the fact that the direct-to-DVD market has gone away. We were very fortunate with Ark of Truth and Continuum to be among the last very successful direct-to-DVD releases before it all stopped happening. The market has change, and it’s still changing, and it’s not what it was. And, of course, there have been very big changes at MGM that kind of added to that. But we had the intentions to make them. We were ready to go, and it was “Wait a while” [...]

In an interview with SciFi Wire (via Airlock Alpha) to promote his guest stint on the “Smallville: Absolute Justice” TV movie, “Stargate” alum Michael Shanks sounds very pessimistic about ever going through the stargate ever again. Which means, of course, if you’ve been waiting for a third direct-to-DVD “Stargate: SG1″ movie, you should probably stop right now. “Never say never. It’s always a possibility. But I think everybody’s moving on to a certain point, and with the new show doing well, everybody’s focusing their attention on that. The ‘SG-1’ idea is somewhat on the back burner, which is a little bit unfortunate, because I think one more story would have been a great way to bring Rick [Anderson] back in and really go there. But you know, business is business.” One of the main reasons why I believe there hasn’t and probably won’t be any new “Stargate” movies (either with the “SG1″ or “Atlantis” crew) is the existence of “Stargate: [...]

While everyone is eagerly anticipating the latest Stargate series to appear on the airwaves, MGM Home Entertainment has decided to release a “Final Cut” version of the original Stargate TV show’s first episode, the two-parter “Children of the Gods”, scheduled for July 21, 2009. For those who have seen the show, “Children of the Gods” re-introduces the main characters from the “Stargate” theatrical movie, but now played by their TV counterparts, led by Richard Dean Anderson, and took place after the events of the movie.
Well color me a tad pleased. I’ve seen and read pretty much everything on the Sci Fi Channel’s new Stargate show, Universe, and I have to admit, I am not liking the things I’m seeing. To me, the whole thing just doesn’t feel like Stargate. It seems to be pandering way too much to you kids and your political allegories and obsessive need for depressing storylines, nothing I would really associate with the Stargate franchise. But in any case, whether the show lives up to my expectations (or in this case, growing doubts) or not, there are some silver linings in the horizon: THR reports that a lot of the old cast from Stargate: SG1 will be making appearances on the show, perhaps in more than one episode (i.e. beyond the obligatory walk-through in the pilot). Some of the names include Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O’Neill (a must-have, and it was a good job getting him to come back, [...]

Well this is a surprise. I had originally thought that with Stargate: Atlantis ending, that its crew would be taking over the Stargate straight-to-DVD movies that the cast of SG1 had been doing while Atlantis was still a series. A handing off, if you will. Now it appears that won’t be the case. There will be the Atlantis movies as we expected, but there will also be new SG1 movies as well. Amanda Tapping, who plays Sam Carter on SG1, told SciFiWire this during the Sci Fi Channel’s media upfront gathering about the future of Atlantis and SG1: A Stargate Atlantis DVD movie is in the works. Have you shot that yet? Tapping: We haven’t, actually. And apparently there’s an SG-1 movie as well that will be happening. Really, how much further can you spread yourself? Tapping: You know what? It’s a fine line. I’m hanging by a little tiny thread, but it’s all good. And the most is important [...]

Here’s a shocker: Jack O’Neill dies in the first few minutes of “Stargate: Continuum”. Now wait a minute, before you Stargate fans get all mad at me, let me say this: “Continuum” is a time travel story, so yes, Jack O’Neill dying, as well as Teal’C and Vala vanishing into thin air in a cloud of black smoke, is no cause for concern. If we’ve learned one thing about the Stargate universe, it’s that death is not absolute. Heck, it wasn’t absolute even when the episode of the week didn’t involve time travel, so why should it be even close when the entire episode hinges on the team time traveling back into the past to set things right? (And anyways, Jack shows back up as his bewildered, Homer-loving self at the 30-minute mark anyhow. Well, okay, maybe not quite his old self, but close enough.) “Continuum” opens with a nice single long take by director Martin Wood that re-introduces us [...]

Well this is sucky news. Actor Don S. Davis, most famous for his role as General George Hammond on the Stargate: SG1 TV series has passed away at the too-young age of 65. According to Don’s wife Ruby Fleming-Davis, Don died June 29 after suffering a heart attack. He had previously reduced much of his workload on SG1 in 2003 due to his health, but returned for some important episodes and is due back for the second (and possibly final) SG1 direct-to-DVD movie, “Stargate: Continuum”. More from Sci Fi Wire: A native of Missouri, Davis had a 26-year career that included many roles on TV series, notably Maj. Garland Briggs on Twin Peaks. He met SG-1 co-star Richard Dean Anderson on the set of MacGyver, on which he worked as a stunt double for actor Dana Elcar. Davis’ final Stargate appearance is in Stargate: Continuum, the upcoming straight-to-DVD movie. He will also appear in the films Vipers, Woodshop and Far [...]

According to Gateworld, the second (and final?) “Stargate: SG1″ made-for-DVD movie, “Continuum”, is scheduled to arrive on DVD July 29, 2008, and according to one producer, the film “stands head and shoulders above even the biggest episodes of the television series”. That’s a mighty big pitch. I liked the first movie, “Ark of Truth”, but didn’t find it to be particularly “head and shoulders” above the series, but maybe they were saving up the production values for the second one. We can only hope. More about the movie below. More: [Stargate producer Brad] Wright also described the scenario that will bring the Stargate to a ship lodged in the ice in the Arctic. “The Stargate [was] at its most vulnerable in history — or at least since it was dug up — was when it was being transported from Africa to North America at the outbreak of World War II,” he said. “So the Stargate is on its way across, [...]

Or at least, as good as Sci Fi Channel shows can do, anyway. Let’s face it: not a whole lot of people GET the Sci Fi Channel, much less get to watch the shows on them like Stargate SG1 and Stargate: Atlantis. But if you did get the Sci Fi Channel, chances are you were watching, because according to the Channel, the ratings for the two finales were pretty darn decent. SyfyPortal: In a press release from the SciFi Channel, “Unending” delivered a 1.7 household rating, translating to approximately 1.2 million viewers from 25-54 years of age and 1.1 million from 18-49. The episode achieved a total of 2.2 million viewers making it the highest rated episode since part one of “The Quest” last year. The spin-off series “Stargate: Atlantis” also proved successful in its timeslot, bringing in a total of 2 million viewers. Like “SG-1,” this marks the largest turnout for the series since it’s mid-season finale before Christmas [...]

Obviously this review for the Stargate SG1 series finale, “Unending” is kind of late. Well, nearly a week late, actually, but nevermind that. It took me a while to get the blog back up and running, so this will just have to do. And anyways, it’s not like anyone has been clamoring for it… But where was I? Oh, right, my review of the Stargate SG1 series finale. Where to start? Here will do: The series finale ended the way the show went about business for the last 10 years: without fanfare. That’s always been one of the things about Stargate SG1 episodes that kind of irked me. Even when the episode featured awe-inspiring space battles or something major having taken place, the ending always came so abruptly, so “one moment things are happening, and the next it’s closing credits”, that it always seem to find a way to leave me unsatisfied. I’m not saying every Stargate SG1 episode needs [...]
