In 1994, a movie called “Stargate” changed the face of science fiction. Fifteen years and six-hundred television/home video spin-offs later, Fox Home Entertainment has brought forth “Stargate: Atlantis – Fans Choice” to Blu-ray in a very barebones release. The disc contains “Rising,” the pilot episode for “Stargate: Atlantis” and the series finale, “Enemy At The Gate” from Season Five.
In “Rising (2004)” we are treated to both cameos from “Stargate” alumni Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks as well as the beginning of a new adventure. A new code is cracked, leading a band of Stargate travelers to the legendary lost city of Atlantis (wait, I thought it was a continent — oh, well). Naturally, it looks like it’ll be a one-way trip and the personnel will have to fend for themselves once there unless they can find the proverbial “rare commodity” — in this case a few spare Zero Point Modules to power up the sunken [...]

You know I love me my Stargate. Sure, most people find it kind of bland and a little by-the-numbers, but maybe that’s just what I want in my daily dose of sci-fi TV. There are plenty of new and hipper sci-fi out there, but give me a nice, new Stargate episode once a week, and I’m a happy camper. So with Stargate: Atlantis now gone to make way for Stargate: Universe, what’s the deal with the Atlantis direct-to-DVD original movies we’ve been promised? We still have no idea what they’ll be about, but at least now we know what the title will be — “Stargate: Extinction”.
The script was written by longtime Stargate producer and writer Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. No word on what the plot of the movie will be, though with a title like “Extinction”, well, it should probably involve something in danger of being extinct or such.
Says Mallozzi about the title (via Gateworld):
“It’s the working title,” Mallozzi [...]

Miss the fifth and final season of Stargate: Atlantis when it aired last year? Have no fear, Hulu.com has put up the first ten episodes of the fifth season online for you to see for absolutely free. This is a limited time offer, and will expire May 23, 2009. I’m guessing once these batch of episodes expire, the site will put up the remaining episodes, but don’t hold me to it.
Here’s the first episode of Season 5, titled “Search and Rescue”:
Atlantis races against time to save team members trapped in a collapsed compound, and rescue a pregnant Teyla from Michael’s clutches.
Watch the other 9 episodes of Season 5 over at Hulu.com.

Longtime Stargate producer Joseph Mallozzi recently sat down to talk with About.com on all things he did right, wrong, and wished he could have done when it comes to the canceled Atlantis TV show. If you’re a fan of the show, I recommend reading the full interview, it’s quite the read. But what about the proposed Atlantis DVD movies and the future of the Stargate TV universe, in particular the upcoming Stargate: Universe? Mallozzi had lots to say about those as well.
About the Atlantis movie:
We have a detailed pitch and we’re going to be having an official discussion probably next week about how we want to proceed. And then Paul and I are probably going to start work on the script very soon. I’ve just got to get this Universe script out of the way, my first Universe script. I’m late into the fourth act at this point. By next week we should probably get started.
On Universe:
But on the other [...]

Here are some good news for fans of the Sci Fi Channel’s Friday night block: both Stargate: Atlantis and Sanctuary averaged roughly 2 million viewers for their season finales last Friday. If 2 million eyeballs doesn’t sound like a lot, you’d be wrong; for a niche basic cable channel, that’s pretty damn good. Atlantis’ “Enemy at the Gate” series finale episode averaged 973,000 Adults 18-49, while Sanctuary’s first season finale averaged 900,000 adults 18-49.
What that basically means is that Sanctuary has more than sufficiently held onto the departing Atlantis’ audience. This is definitely good news for Sanctuary, which I was afraid might slip in the ratings after its phenomenal series premiere. It now appears as if the show will hold steady, and if anything, may continue to improve. The first season is always the hardest to survive, just ask fans of The Dresden Files. But most of all, I’m psyched for Amanda Tapping. Hopefully Sanctuary will stick around for [...]

“Enemy at the Gate”, the final Stargate: Atlantis episode, comes after a pretty strange episode in which we visited a parallel Earth where John Sheppard was a burnt out cop in Vegas chasing a serial killer that, as it turns out, is actually a Wraith soldier stranded on Earth during a failed invasion. The episode was titled “Vegas”, but I like to call it CSI: Atlantis, since the entire episode was purposely shot in that franchise show’s style. At the end of “Vegas”, the Wraith succeeded in punching a hole through space-time and sending the coordinates to Earth into multiple parallel universes to be intercepted. So whatever became of that signal? As it turns out, one of those parallel universes it managed to reach is our universe – or the universe in which the regular Stargate: Atlantis show is set in, I mean.
“Enemy at the Gate” opens with the Wraith Todd, alive and well, contacting Atlantis with a dire warning: [...]

Promo images for the Stargate: Atlantis episode (Season 5, Episode 20) “Enemy at the Gates”. That’s right. This is the final episode of Stargate: Atlantis before the cast and crew jet off into their very own series of made-for-DVD movies, following in the footsteps of the Stargate: SG1 gang. From the looks of these promos (VERY SPOILERISH, I must say), I guess we know who ends up with whom — at least at the end of the episode.
And look whose back, Amanda Tapping! I would have also liked to see Torri Higginson make at least a cameo in the final episode of the TV show, but apparently that wasn’t to be. Too bad, she was really a great part of the show while she was on it.

MGM and The Sci Fi Channel have now confirmed that Season 5 of Stargate: Atlantis will indeed be the show’s final season; once the current season ends, the show will move to a series of direct-to-DVD movies, similar to what happened with Stargate: SG1. There will be two Atlantis movies first, and depending on how they do, will probably result in more. But have no fear, Stargate fans. After Atlantis leaves the air, you won’t be denied your weekly dose of Stargate — The Sci Fi Channel has greenlit a new Stargate series. Yup, it’s Stargate: Universe, which we’ve heard of before.
THR has more on Stargate: Universe:
The new show will involve more space-based action than “SG-1″ or “Atlantis.” With the “Star Trek” television franchise having folded in 2005 and Sci Fi’s “Battlestar Galactica” airing its final episodes next year, the network hopes “Universe” will become sci-fi fans’ new favorite space-travel series.

I have to admit, although I have DVR every episode of Stargate: Atlantis starting with this year, I was a little shock to realize that it had been on the air for five years. Now it appears as if the show’s current fifth season will also be its last, with the Sci Fi Channel planning on shutting down production on the series and moving the cast/crew onto a Stargate: Atlantis movie franchise, similar to what they recently did with Stargate: SG1. That venture, it would appear, proved successful enough that the Sci Fi Channel now wants to do the same with Atlantis.
The news comes from Multichannel.com:
Space drama Stargate Atlantis will conclude its run on Sci Fi Channel after the current, fifth season ends next January — but the network has greenlit a two-hour Atlantis movie to run after that and says the show will live on as a network franchise.
After airing on Sci Fi sometime next year, the untitled Atlantis [...]

When you’ve starred in one science fiction show, it’s almost a given that you can waltz into another science fiction show without any background check. Once you’ve been on one show, you can go to another without a problem, because even though something like Firefly was lowly rated and barely seen, you’ve still got sci-fi cache. Which explains why Jewel Staite easily jumped from the cancelled Firefly to the running Stargate: Atlantis, where she’s just nabbed a regular starring role. Jewel Staite is our Sci-Fi Babe Spotlight of the day.
A quick bio of her from Wikipedia:
Jewel Belair Staite (born June 2, 1982 in White Rock, British Columbia, Canada) is a Canadian actress, best known for her role in Firefly and the subsequent film Serenity. She also portrays the character of Dr. Jennifer Keller on Stargate Atlantis.
Staite is perhaps best known for her role as Kaylee Frye in the short-lived science fiction/western television series Firefly and its subsequent 2005 film, Serenity. [...]

There are also news of returning and leaving castmembers. Of note is Amanda Tapping, who will be doing “guest star” work while Sci Fi revs up production on her new series, Sanctuary. More:
Fan favorite Paul McGillion will return for five episodes to reprise his role as Dr. Carson Beckett. Amanda Tapping (Col. “Sanctuary” hails from the “Stargate SG-1″ trio of star Amanda Tapping, writer-producer Damian Kindler and producer-director Martin Wood, who are executive producing the series with Sam Egan.
Tapping stars as the enigmatic Dr. Helen Magnus who is on a quest with her young protege, Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), to track down, aid and protect strange creatures that walk the earth.
Kindler created “Sanctuary,” while Wood directed the webisodes starring Tapping.
Amanda Tapping in an original sci-fi series not involving replicators, worm aliens, or intergalactic travel? Say it ain’t so!
I’m just kidding. I’ve seen some of the green screen-heavy web episodes, and they’re very cool. For the show’s transition to the Sci Fi Channel, they’ll [...]

In a press release from the SciFi Channel, “Unending” delivered a 1.7 household rating, translating to approximately 1.2 million viewers from 25-54 years of age and 1.1 million from 18-49. The episode achieved a total of 2.2 million viewers making it the highest rated episode since part one of “The Quest” last year.
