So what’s the deal on those “Stargate: SG1″ and “Stargate: Atlantis” movies that we were promised a while back, before “Stargate: Universe” became a hit for SyFy? According to producer Brad Wright, it was a combination of many things — MGM’s current money woes, the DVD market not being what it once was, and just pure bad timing. Via TVDeathRay: The only thing that is blocking the SG-1 movie or the Atlantis movie, the only thing, is the fact that the direct-to-DVD market has gone away. We were very fortunate with Ark of Truth and Continuum to be among the last very successful direct-to-DVD releases before it all stopped happening. The market has change, and it’s still changing, and it’s not what it was. And, of course, there have been very big changes at MGM that kind of added to that. But we had the intentions to make them. We were ready to go, and it was “Wait a while” [...]

While this news from “Stargate: Universe” producer Joseph Mallozzi about an impending “Universe”/”Atlantis” cross-over will make some fans of the show happy (and infuriate others, no doubt), I fall somewhere in the middle. Here’s the deal: I’ve seen all those cross-overs by the “Stargate: SG1″ cast in “Universe”, and each and every time, even though I kind of like seeing Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Richard Dean Anderson still hanging out in the “Stargate” universe, it always feels … incongruous. I have my reasons, I assure you. It’s because “Universe” has such a different rhythm and tone than the rest of the “Stargate” universe, but in particular “SG1″, that it always feels like the producers are trying to, for some reason, blend, say, the old “Battlestar Galactica” with the new version. It just feels wrong. But maybe that’s just me. According to producer Mallozzi, you can expect a couple of “Atlantis” crewmembers to pop up in “Universe” sometime in the [...]

You know I love me my Stargate. Sure, most people find it kind of bland and a little by-the-numbers, but maybe that’s just what I want in my daily dose of sci-fi TV. There are plenty of new and hipper sci-fi out there, but give me a nice, new Stargate episode once a week, and I’m a happy camper. So with Stargate: Atlantis now gone to make way for Stargate: Universe, what’s the deal with the Atlantis direct-to-DVD original movies we’ve been promised? We still have no idea what they’ll be about, but at least now we know what the title will be — “Stargate: Extinction”. The script was written by longtime Stargate producer and writer Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. No word on what the plot of the movie will be, though with a title like “Extinction”, well, it should probably involve something in danger of being extinct or such. Says Mallozzi about the title (via Gateworld): “It’s the [...]
