So what’s the deal on those “Stargate: SG1″ and “Stargate: Atlantis” movies that we were promised a while back, before “Stargate: Universe” became a hit for SyFy? According to producer Brad Wright, it was a combination of many things — MGM’s current money woes, the DVD market not being what it once was, and just pure bad timing.

Stargate Universe and Atlantis Crossover is in the Works
While this news from “Stargate: Universe” producer Joseph Mallozzi about an impending “Universe”/”Atlantis” cross-over will make some fans of the show happy (and infuriate others, no doubt), I fall somewhere in the middle. Here’s the deal: I’ve seen all those cross-overs by the “Stargate: SG1″ cast in “Universe”, and each and every time, even though I kind of like seeing Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Richard Dean Anderson still hanging out in the “Stargate” universe, it always feels … incongruous.
First Stargate Atlantis DVD Movie Will be Called Extinction
You know I love me my Stargate. Sure, most people find it kind of bland and a little by-the-numbers, but maybe that’s just what I want in my daily dose of sci-fi TV. There are plenty of new and hipper sci-fi out there, but give me a nice, new Stargate episode once a week, and I’m a happy camper. So with Stargate: Atlantis now gone to make way for Stargate: Universe, what’s the deal with the Atlantis direct-to-DVD original movies we’ve been promised? We still have no idea what they’ll be about, but at least now we know what the title will be — “Stargate: Extinction”.
