In case you missed it, here’s the Super Bowl TV spot for George Lucas’ “Star Wars” re-releases in 3D. It’s hard not to get excited when you hear the music start up and the sound of lightsabers humming. Those are such iconic sounds, especially if you’re a sci-fi movie geek. Of course, then you realize that you’ll have to see that Godawful “The Phantom Menace” first, and the enthusiasm sort of dims somewhat. Can you just see the last 20 minutes of the film? I wonder if you can get a discount if that’s all you really want to see. Hell, I’ll settle for the Jedi-Darth Maul duel. The rest? Ugh. Even now, years later, still … UGH. Star Wars menaces theaters again (in 3D) starting this Friday.

Chances are, I’m not seeing the “Star Wars” films when they’re re-released in theaters in 3D, staring with the first movie “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” on February 10th. No offense, but I got the whole “You need to see ‘Star Wars’ in theaters at least once!” kick out of my system when Georgie re-released them into theaters the first time around. But in case you are thinking about handing over more of your money, Lucas is pulling out some very special gimmicks to get fans back into theaters for his latest cash grab super duper great re-invention of the franchise. There are some very cool special offers, giveaways, and various fanboy stuff being handed out — details below (via LATimes): * At all RealD theaters, the Darth Maul glasses you see above will be handed out (while supplies last) to fans who buy tickets on the movie’s opening day. * At all AMC Theaters, fans will [...]

On my list of things to worry about, George Lucas retiring to a life of making small arthouse indie films that only a few dozen people on the east and west coasts will ever see is not exactly at the very top. It’s somewhere between “doing laundry” and “finishing that apple I started last night”. So yes, this revelation that ol George is feeling a bit insulted that so many fanboys on the Interwebs hates his guts for relentlessly and pointlessly tinkering with the “Star Wars” movies does not feel me with sadness. The whole thing came about during an interview with the New York Times, where George was promoting “Red Tails”, about black fighter pilots during WWII. In the interview, George also unleashed his frustration about his current occupation. On retiring: I’m retiring. I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff. On Internet fanboys: Why would I make any more, when everybody [...]

You gotta love Volkswagen. Their “The Force” trailer from last year, featuring the little Darth Vader walking around trying to use the “Force” to do bad things to various objects (and creatures) in his house was easily one of the best commercials during last year’s Super Bowl. The car company has a new Star Wars-inspired commercial that they plan to run during this year’s Super Bowl, and this one involves dogs barking out the “Imperial March” from the franchise. Awesome, awesome stuff. Here’s that Little Darth Vader spot in case you’ve forgotten it already:

Hell, these posters for “The Phantom Menace” are so cool, you might almost forget that the movie sucks donkey balls. Almost. “Menace” gets re-released first on February 10th, and will be followed by the rest of the franchise, which means two more awful prequels before we finally get to the good “Star Wars” movies. Unless, of course, “Phantom Menace” doesn’t make money, but come on, we know that’s not going to happen. “Star Wars” fanboys are such sheep.
The great thing about George Lucas’ “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” is just how clunky it made even great actors like Liam Neeson and Samuel L. Jackson look while reciting those Godawful lines of dialogue. I mean, listen to Jackson in this trailer for the 3D re-release. It’s like he’s choking on a rock while having to read George’s lines! Awesome. The 3D re-release of “The Phantom Menace” hits theaters again February 10th, 2012. Until then, check out the trailer, which was just released in front of “The Three Musketeers” last week.

“Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” returns to theaters — this time in 3D!! — on February 10, 2012. But if you’re not into that whole fancy, newfangled 3D nonsense, you can still see it again in 2D, all remastered and whatnot. I’m assuming it promises a better looking copy than when the film was first released in 1999. Otherwise, what’s the point? George didn’t just go back and add in extra Stormtroopers or alien bugs to various scenes, did he? Hopefully not. The new poster looks, uh, not that hot, but I do like the fact that ol Darth Maul is getting the center of attention treatment in the new poster. Never let it be said that George Lucas doesn’t know what fans want. (Unless it comes to messing around endlessly with the original trilogy, that is…) The original poster definitely looks heads and tails better:

He’s baaaaaaaaaack! Yup, even being cut in half won’t stop Sith dude Darth Maul from returning to the land of the living to menace those Jedi types. After all, it’s not like the Emperor himself has died and come back and died and come back what, a billion times already? If you’ve been keeping tabs on the Cartoon Network’s “The Clone Wars” animated saga, then you’ll be seeing the return of Darth Maul when the show returns sometime in January 2012. This is definitely good news for fans of the “Star Wars” franchise, since Maul was easily the best thing about “The Phantom Menace”, and the guy barely spoke. But like Boba Fett before him, he proved to be immensely popular with the kids. It could just be the crazy cool make-up or the fact that Ray Park who played him is a kick ass martial artist, but either way, he proved to be an instant hit with the kids. [...]

Love them or hate them (but apparently it’s more of the former), George Lucas has added a few more million to his bank account. And of course by “a few” we mean $84 million in just one week of Blu-ray sales for his just-released “Star Wars” saga on Blu-ray Here’s George crowing about it: Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced today that STAR WARS is the bestselling catalog Blu-ray Disc of all time with worldwide sales totaling one million units, including 515,000 units sold in North America in its first week alone. This represents $84 million in worldwide consumer spend including $38 million in North America – unprecedented for a nine-disc Blu-ray collection at a premium price. The thirteen-month campaign to launch the SAGA Blu-ray and engage consumers around the globe began in August 2010. From Darth Vader at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a first look at San Diego Comic Con, a first-of-its-kind partnership with [...]

George Lucas is releasing the entire “Star Wars” franchise onto Blu-ray for the very first time on September 16, 2011, which is a good thing. Well, for the original trilogy, anyway. I don’t really care to see the three prequels in Blu-ray or any other format, thank you very much. (Okay, there is ONE good moment in the entire prequels — the Darth Maul fight at the end. Other than that? Eh. Do not want.) So you might be wondering — besides the new asskicking Blu-ray format, what else will be different about “Star Wars” now that George is once again tinkering with the movies? Well no one really knows for sure, but there is one thing that has been revealed — in the crucial scene between Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and the Emperor in “Return of the Jedi”, Darth Vader now has an additional line of dialogue that, uh, is not entirely necessary. I mean, all those CGI puppets running around with absolutely no weight to any of them whatsoever. Ugh. Seeing the actors swordfighting by themselves in front of a green screen and then CGI opponents being added in just sort of brings it home how absolutely reliant Lucas became of CG, whether they looked right or not. Just saying, but shit, sometimes there is such a thing as TOO MUCH CGI. That’s the prequels in a nutshell right there.
