Lots of famous folks were up for the part of Hans Solo in “Star Wars”. Thankfully, Harrison Ford came away with the job. Besides Harrison, actors like Nick Nolte, Christopher Walken, Jack Nicholson and even Steve Martin were considered for the part.
Here’s one guy that I think could have pulled it off. Kurt Russell’s audition was a little dry but I think Kurt would have brought the humour and the attitude eventually. Here’s his game effort to land Han. While I’m at it, just for giggles is a few more auditions of the lucky bunch that caught Uncle George’s attention. Via Cinematical.

It’s just a matter of time before we see more “Star Wars” movies. Let’s face it. “Star Wars” is as popular as ever and other than the last movie of the recent trilogy, George Lucas’s recent efforts have been iffy to say the least. But will we see this new 3D trilogy before the Ewoks come home?
MarketSaw thinks so. It says a trusted source is saying there will be three more movies on the way, this time in 3D and these films will not be written and directed by his highness this time. I’ve heard folks already debunking this rumour but it is my true belief that there will be more movies. It will happen. George isn’t getting any younger and neither are a couple of guys that are mentioned as possible directors, Spielberg and Francis Ford Copella. Star Wars movies take a long time to get to the screen. Get some good scripts and make some good movies. George [...]

One of comedian Patton Oswalt’s most famous riffs is explaining what was wrong with the “Star Wars” prequels. By way of imaginary time travel, here’s Oswalt’s fictional encounter with George Lucas, who has just informed him of his ideas for a “Star Wars” prequels.
The original stand-up routine was pretty NSFW, but here’s a cleaned-up version that Oswalt did for the Comedy Central. It was funnier when you heard Oswalt, a short, fat comedian throwing out F-bombs like there was no tomorrow. Still funny, though, but I would recommend hunting down the R-rated version if you get the chance. This should give you an idea, though.

Either the lads at LucasFilm are really taking their time to get things right on the new live action Star Wars series coming sometime in, sometime, or there is just not a ton of passion in the creative team to get this puppy on the air. I am growing dubious, dubious and impatient.
The Examiner has a report from LucasFilm exec Steve Sansweet in which he sleepily responded to The Examiner’s query about the series. Writers have been hired apparently (yawn). Pre Production commences this year with production starting next year some time and an air date in 2012.
I’m of mixed feelings here. Let me elaborate. Do I want an epic multi year Star Wars story set in the reported time line of between the death of Padme and after the Emperor starts cracking heads and dissolving democracy? Do I want to see Jedi on Sith, Force on Force action? Oh please yes master Yoda. Do I want to report the [...]

Many of you Sci-Fi citizens, like me, get frustrated that we’re not living the life that constantly floats around in our imaginations. Watching or reading good or even bad Sci-Fi can be torture sometimes. I do not live on Coruscant or Naboo. I don’t have a Minority Report style computer interface nor can I jack into a Gibson flavoured Matrix. In fact, here where I am, perched upon the shores of the angry North Atlantic, I’m about to get pounded by an old school Hurricane named Bill and will most likely be living the powerless life for a few days. It’ll be candles and tuna fish for this guy for a bit I think.

George Lucas takes his time. I’d like to say that he takes the time to get it right but I’d be stretching it. George certainly has some mad world building skills. A live television series is on George’s mind these days. He is making preparations, slowly. Soon I’m sure the news will be juicy and plentiful. But for now, we Sci-Fi bloggers must dig and harrass for every lucious drop of news.
We have heard and reported that down under, writers were being hired and scripts perhaps were on the go. Now, perhaps we have a confirmation of this. Movieline sat down with Rose Byrne who played Dormé in Attack of the Clones. She seems to have some valuable intel.
Word is that he’s developing a live-action Star Wars TV series now.
Yes! A friend of mine is actually one of the writers on the show. It’s set in space. I think it’s like a family drama, as well, or something? I think [...]

George Lucas is living the dream. No matter how many mistakes he makes with the Star Wars universe, I (and just about everyone else) still get excited at the mere suggestion of anything new that’s Star Warsy. Once bitten, twice shy has become 4 or 5 times bitten, Endy still putting hand in lion’s mouth.
So, this really slow to germinate live action Star Wars series we have been told would, eventually, arrive has apparently, thanks to a rumour nab by SciFiwire down under, begun the pre production process. Australian writers have been summoned apparently and script work is percolating. We will wait and see. Thanks Scifiwire.

Forget the iPhone. Though Apple has created what is probably the greatest pound for pound gadget in Nerd history, we both know that somewhere in your virtual ultimate wishlist tech budget is an account for what will be for someone a license to print money. You want a real lightsaber. When one of these comes out, with utility, I don’t mean just a pretty light show, you will mortgage the house, sell your Star Trek memorabilia and give up long distance calls to Mom just to own one.
Well, we have our first working lightsaber. Dental science dudes at the University of Southern California have created a kind of plasma torch that fires a coherent beam of plasma that disintegrates plaque on teeth but does no harm to sensitive gummy bits. The linked video below reveals the beam.
My friends and I have often sat around trying to figure out a way to build a lightsaber so that the beam terminates at [...]

I’ve often pondered what it would really be like to own a lightsaber. Seems cool in theory but there are some obvious complications. For one, Jedi and Dark Sith really like to whip those things around themselves. You know, between their legs, around their heads, etc. A lightsaber cuts in all directions and it wouldn’t be a paper cut if you know what I’m saying. Also, if you own a lightsaber you are going to want to whip it out and use it and I don’t mean cutting the turkey or trimming the hedges. Here we have a short film about how owning a lightsaber can lead you down the garden path to the dark side.

I’m so old that I remember when Tom Selleck was THE man. We used to gather around in the student council lunch room and reminisce about previous episodes. We fellas would wonder in awe at Magnum’s ability to get shot in the same place every episode and still turn out for the next show. The girls would eye flutter at the very mention of the mustached one and on Thursday, the night’s calendar was freed of everything not Hawaiian themed. Those were halcyon days my friends. Good times.
Tom Selleck and Harrison Ford of course are forever linked in the time space continuum. Tom was offered the part of Indiana Jones but because of his contract in Magnum, was unable to don the whip. What alternate futures, what many worlds quantum weirdness lurks in the warp and weave beneath the illusion of our boring and static reality? In the video below, perhaps King George decided television was a better medium for [...]

According to Ain’t It Cool News this movie has been in post production for about 2 years now, following initial fan screenings which showed the film for all its flaws. The movie is an autobiographical account of director Patrick Read Johnson’s early years as a budding filmmaker on the cusp of the release of the original Star Wars. From the trailer (thanks Starlog) I’d say it looks pretty good, see for yourself.

Maybe there’s a reason George Lucas sent his Death Star to take out the Enterprise after all. Stumbled across this video over at CollegeHumor.com, which not-so-subtly makes the case that J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Trek” is little more than a carbon copy of George Lucas’ original “Star Wars”, complete with disgruntled farm boy. You know, before he got moronic and introduced us to greedy aliens and Jar Jar Binks?
You can certainly make the case that the plot of “Star Wars” itself wasn’t exactly original, as most of the original trilogy was lifted from Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress”. And really, hasn’t the farm boy makes good plot been done in a lot of movies before “Star Wars”, and repeated since?

I can see you out there, hovering over your keyboard, slack jawed, staring with squinty questioning eyes into your bright LCD screen, yearning for something new. Thus far your movie watching existence has been confined to the clinically brain dead genres of the romantic comedy, the buddy movie or films starring Ben Affleck. Something has to give.
You’d like to branch out, stretch the neurons out a little, watch something that doesn’t find you vacant eyed and drooling some short time after the opening credits. Desperate, you consulted The Google and typed in “Movies that won’t make me stupid”.
The Google provided a list of possibilities but there are many choices, some with frightening titles like “THX 1138″, “12 Monkeys” or “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. For the challenge a growing mind really needs there is really only Science Fiction movies. Science Fiction, sometimes to it’s destruction, is not afraid to go there. Most Science Fiction movies assume you have both [...]

So what can possibly be hotter than pretty girls who, for some strange reason, have an interest in “Star Wars” and doesn’t think you’re weird for dressing up as a Wookie and attending Star Wars conventions? Or cringe at your complete devotion to a short, bearded guy who lives on his own ranch and adopts kids by the dozens? How about hot girls who break out the lightsabers to compete for your attention.
This is a parody of those Ax ad commercials, featuring girls in a bar and lightsabers. You’re welcome, Star Wars nerds.

I have mixed feelings about this. I love my Star Wars. I do indeed. I once blew a promising romance with a lovely blond girl by forcing her to stand in line with me for 8 hours for the Empire Strikes Back. It was playing at only one theatre where I lived. I made the ultimate sacrifice.
And so I feel entitled to moan a bit at what has happened to my beloved Wookiees and Jedi’s in the years since. I think Mr. Lucas has lost his footing a bit. Just a bit. Apparently, the live action series will be gritty and feature a storyline where apparently the Sopranos meets the potty mouthed residents of Deadwood, with lightsabers hopefully.
Sounds promising. It looks like George will not be writing the scripts. Mr. Lucas is a master class world builder but he is unfortunately not as talented in the writing dept. I remain hopeful, as the Force requires. Via Slashfilm.
