Or not. If you’re one of the Star Wars fans who cried out in pain when Disney axed “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” after their acquisition of the property from the clutches of George Lucas, here’s some good news for ya. The studio is planning a new Star Wars animated series set for 2014 called “Star Wars Rebels”. Set in the two decades between “Episode III” and “Episode IV,” the series will follow the adventures of the Rebel Alliance as they attempt to evade the growing might of the Empire. Simon Kinberg, who is working on the new trilogy of Star Wars films for director J.J. Abrams and Disney, will executive produce the new show. “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” vets Greg Weisman and Dave Filoni will also be producing. Lucasfilm Animation, who did “The Clone Wars” will also be doing the honors on “Rebels”. One of the show’s potential plotlines involve Ahsoka, Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi apprentice from “The Clone... Continue Reading »

But does it have a noob tube? I don’t keep up with “Star Wars” games (how many are there, like 200 titles?), but had I heard about “Star Wars: First Assault” earlier, I would have been so into it. It looks like a first-person shooter in the vein of “Call of Duty” or “Battlefield”, though of course set in the “Star Wars” universe. The game is apparently stuck in purgatory after the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm, so who knows if the game will ever see the light of day. But if it ever does, this is the kind of stormtrooper goodness you would have access to: Pretty cool, right? Like assaulting the beaches in a “Call of Duty” game, but firing lasers and shit. Here’s an earlier promo trailer:

I got around to watching “The Clone Wars”, but apparently a lot of you kids really liked it, because it ran for 5 years. Well, that’s 5 years and out, as it turns out. Lucasfilm has officially canceled the show, releasing a press release announcing the decision: As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come. As part of this shift, we have also made some key decisions affecting Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Detours. After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series.... Continue Reading »

Pretty officially, anyway. It may have been decades since Princess Leia slipped on that gold bikini that launched a thousand boys into manhood, but it doesn’t mean we wouldn’t still like to see Carrie Fisher back in the new “Star Wars” movie set to be directed by J.J. Abrams. Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford, too. So it’s no surprise to hear that all three are pretty much back. Vulture noticed confirmation of this from George Lucas himself, who recently gave an interview and said the following: We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison — or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation. He then quickly added: Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them. Of course they’re coming back. Hamill and Fisher aren’t exactly doing much, and Ford could use a surefire hit himself. Having said that, it’d be great... Continue Reading »

Shitty trilogy, awesome Natalie Portman. I’ve seen all three prequels more than once. Hell, I’ve actually seen all three in the theaters, then again on DVD/Blu-ray, and once (or a half dozen more times) on cable. And I still can’t tell you what the hell happens in all three movies, though the first one I paid more attention to because I was always waiting for that final Darth Maul fight. The other two? Just one big blur of pretty CG and crappy acting and atrocious writing. But you know one thing about the “Star Wars” prequels that wasn’t bad? Natalie Portman. Granted, her acting in this was almost as bad as everyone else’s (with the exception of Ewan McGregor, who was actually really awesome), but damn, did she look good in the movies. (When she’s not covered in Kabuki make-up, I mean.) I bet she still wakes up in cold sweats remembering her “acting” in the three films.
Depending on who you ask. I know one thing: Disney is loving all this attention the blogsophere is giving them about their Star Wars movies. What are they planning? What’s set in stone? What’s just being talked about? Lots and lots of interest, and Disney must feel like the gazillion they spent buying Lucasfilms was well worth it. The latest rumor/news/whimsical tale from the land of Maybe-Maybe Not “Star Wars” news has Han Solo and Boba Fett getting their own stand-alone movies. Via EW: The Han Solo story would take place in the time period between Revenge of the Sith and the first Star Wars (now known as A New Hope), so although it’s possible Harrison Ford could appear as a framing device, the movie would require a new actor for the lead — one presumably much younger than even the 35-year-old Ford when he appeared in the 1977 original. The Boba Fett film would take place either between A... Continue Reading »

Stand-alone movie get one, he will? Lots of rumors about a “Star Wars” stand-alone movie in the aftermath of Disney buying up Lucasfilms and their most important commodity, the “Star Wars” franchise. Previously we’ve heard that Zack Snyder might be directing one, but that was debunked. Though it did introduce the idea of “Star Wars” stand-alone movies that wouldn’t necessarily impact the upcoming new trilogy, but would be set within the same, well, universe. Disney CEO chief Bob Eisner has now confirmed that the studio are indeed doing stand-alone “Star Wars” movies, though he doesn’t know which character will be up first. Eisner tells CNBC: So who is up next? According to AICN, that would be Yoda, everyone’s favorite green Jedi. Responding to a silly petition for the Administration to build a Death Star, the Obama Administration has put out an official reply, citing a $850,000,000,000,000,000 price tag (that’s a lot!) and past Death Star’s faulty construction design. This Isn’t the Petition Response You’re Looking For By Paul Shawcross The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn’t on the horizon. Here are a few reasons: - The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it. - The Administration does not support blowing up planets. - Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship? However, look carefully (here’s how) and you’ll notice something already floating in the sky — that’s no... Continue Reading »

Time to geek out, Star Wars fans. According to THR, you might be getting more than just three new “Star Wars” movies courtesy of Disney post-acquisition of Lucasfilm. That is, if this is true, and not just some weird rumor. But anyways, according to the trades, recently hired writers Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg may not have been hired to write either “Star Wars: Episode 8″ or “9″ after all. In fact, they may be doing something completely different … but within the “Star Wars” universe. But now insiders tell THR that while Kasdan and Kinberg indeed have been hired to work on the Star Wars franchise, they will be writing separate projects (hence the reason why they also would receive producer credits), not necessarily Episode VIII and Episode IX. Their scripts could turn into official “Episodes” in the main Skywalker storyline, or they could form the basis for spinoffs focusing on side characters.
Who will be in it? What will it be about? Novelist Timothy Zahn wants to know, too. Zahn, sci-fi writer and author of the “Heir to the Empire” (aka the The Thrawn Trilogy) “Star Wars” books, recently gave his thoughts about the upcoming Disney “Star Wars” movies. Basically, Zahn has no idea, because apparently the “Star Wars” book universe and the movie universe are two separate beasts. Which makes sense, given all the various “Star Wars”-related fiction out there, from books to comic books to games to TV shows, trying to get them to all adhere to one continuity would be, frankly, kind of impossible. But there are a few things he’d love to see in the upcoming movies: Frankly, I’m interested to see what they’re going to do. Is Lucas going to skip a generation so that Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher can do their roles at the proper age? Or would they try some CG ‘youthing,’... Continue Reading »

Holy crap. George Lucas just sold the “Star Wars” brand to Disney. Check your calender. Go ahead, I’ll wait. It’s October 30th not April 1st. This ain’t a joke. Holy crap. So what does this mean for all you “Star Wars” fans? This: Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations. Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will... Continue Reading »

Apparently this is a work-in-process anime version of a “Star Wars” tale by animator Paul Michael Johnson. The original, from what I can tell, didn’t have sound or SFX, but leave it to the Interwebs’ legion of creativity geeks to add in the missing pieces on their own accord. The result? Two minutes of very cool “Star Wars” anime following a TIE Fighter’s pilot as he takes on some rebel scum. Here’s what JPL4185, who added the sound effects, has to say about the video: Star wars animation originally uploaded by otaking77077. I saw it posted on reddit and thought it could use some SFX and fitting music! The music is from the first Knights of the Old Republic. BTW I contacted otaking77077 for permission to put make this public before I posted this video, and thought I’d share his message to me for everyone here to read: I have on idea if this is part of a larger “Star... Continue Reading »
