Shatner’s Ego Kept Him out of Trek 11

I’m not what you would call a really big Star Trek fan, or Trekkie. (Or Trekkers, as I know some of them like to be called.) I mean, sure, I watched almost all of the Voyager and Next Generation episodes, but that’s because I just like sci-fi in general, and there wasn’t a whole lot of sci-fi on TV back then. (Or at least, big-budget sci-fi TV, anyways. I don’t even want to think about stuff like, say, Time Trax, etc.) So when news broke that William Shatner would NOT be in J.J. Abrams’ Trek reboot, fans were up in arms. I personally didn’t mind all that much, as I was never one to appreciate, as it were, Shatner’s acting style.

New Star Trek 11 Character Posters

Look, kids, it’s our first look at Simon Pegg as Scotty from J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek movie! Well not really. It’s just Simon Pegg looking like Simon Pegg, but with the Trek emblem and artwork around the image, he’s “officially” Scotty. Kinda. Anyways, if that’s enough to get your engines revving, then you’ll love these new Trek 11 character posters that Paramount has just released online to the masses. Yup, real Star Trek-y. If you like that sort of thing, I mean, what with the movie still a year away. I still think the Pike kid looks like a deranged, “serial killer next door” type with that pose…

New Star Trek 11 Posters – First Character Images

After seeing that Federation insignia thingie for so long, we finally get an actual poster for J.J. Abrams’ rebooting of the Trek franchise — plus our first official looks at four of the movie’s main characters — Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and Eric Bana as evil Romulan badass Nero. Check out two versions of the poster below. By the way, is it me or does Chris Pine as Kirk looks, er, kind of evil? Hell, he looks even more evil than Bana’s Nero in these posters!

Classic Sci-Fi Moments: Shatner at a Trek Convention

Phasers on shame! In this classic sci-fi moment, William Shatner shows up for a guest spot on Saturday Night Live. The premise: Shatner attends a Trekkie convention, where he’s bombarded with Star Trek trivia that he knows nothing about, and truthfully, no one knows anything about unless you’re a self-professed “Trekkie” and proud of it. Shatner’s response is brilliant, starting with the classic, “You’ve turned an enjoyable job that I did for two years as a lark into a colossal waste of time!” Followed by other dumbfounded questions as, “How old are you people”? And, of course, the Geek-tastic cap-off, “Have you ever kissed a girl?” Jon Lovitz’s response (dressed up as a Trekkie nerd, of course) to the question is priceless.

Star Trek 11 Behind-the-Scenes Tidbits

One-half of the writing team behind J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek 11″ was at the 16th Annual Grand Slam: The Sci-Fi Summit in Burbank, CA over the weekend, and ScreenRant had a guy there who jotted down some notes. The primary speaker was writer Roberto Orci, who co-wrote the Abrams movie with his partner Robert Kurtzman, who wasn’t there. Orci answered a lot of questions about how the film was handled behind the scenes, but not so much about the plot, only to say that it was written with Leonard Nimoy’s Spock in mind, that if he hadn’t sign on, they would have had been in trouble.

First Look at Star Trek 11′s Shuttle, Set

With J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 11 reboot now shooting, you just knew that spy pictures were going to start flying out fast and furious, and so they have. The latest back of spy pics from the shoot arrived at AICN, and shows what Trek 11′s shuttles were going to look like, as well as some interior shots. Man, they sure look bulky, huh? But then again, I guess that’s the point — remember, this is the early days of Trek we’re talking about here, so it won’t be the sleek look of “Next Generation” or “Voyager”.

Your First Look at Star Fleet Academy in Trek 11

Apparently J.J. Abrams’ version of Starfleet Academy is very bright red and dull grey, and oh yeah, the girls still wear those fetching mini-skirts. Wow, the future is rad, man! Anyhoo. AICN recently got sent some spy pictures (talk about spy! it’s like espionage or something judging from the way these pictures were shot!) from the set of Star Trek 11 that shows off Starfleet Academy. You know, where Kirt, Spock, et al went through their Trekking education. I guess. Check them out.

George Takei to Cameo in Trek 11?

True story: when I was in school, George Takei once came to our class and talked about his experiences living in an internment camp in California during World War II, and it was there that he fell in love with movies and wanted to be an actor. No, really. Anyways, George Takei said he recently “had lunch” with J.J. Abrams, which brings up the question: is he scheduled for a cameo in Trek 11, too?

Star Trek 11 Release Date Changed to May 2009

If you’re one of the legion of Trekkies waiting with bated breath for December to see J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the Trek franchise with Star Trek 11, then you’ll just have to wait five extra months, because Paramount has decided that Trek 11 would make a better Summer flick than a Christmas flick, and has changed the film’s release date from December 2008 to May 2009.

William Shatner Thinks He Sucks

I must admit to having a bit of a warped perspective on William Shatner. You see, every now and then I’ll see Shatner show up on my local TV channel doing advertising for a local law firm. Yes, William Shatner is now doing TV commercials for local law firms. Anyhoo. William Shatner apparently doesn’t think too highly of himself, either. Or at least, his acting.

Eric Bana Says Nero Only Has a Cameo in Trek 11?

This is strange news. Everyone has expected that Eric Bana’s Romulan villain, Nero, would have a big role in J.J. Abrams’ Trek 11, otherwise why would they cast such a big name for such a small role? But according to Bana himself, his role is only “a cameo”. But, he adds, “It’s a good cameo!” Is he messing with us?

Zoe Saldana Talks Star Trek 11

Zoe Saldana is a gorgeous woman, and the idea that she’ll be playing a younger version of Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Trek 11 is pretty good stuff. Via an interview with Black Film, Saldana, who will also be seen in James Cameron’s sci-fi epic “Avatar” in 2009, talks about her role on Trek 11.

Jimmy Bennett is Young Kirk in Trek 11

Not to be confused with “young adult Kirk”, who will be played by Chris Pine, word from Coming Soon is that J.J. Abrams has cast 11-year old Jimmy Bennett to play an even younger version of James T. Kirk in Trek 11. I guess this means we’ll be delving deeper into Kirk’s past than originally thought. What’s next, a fetus Kirk?

Chris Pine Talks Trek 11

Entertainment Weekly recently caught up with unknown actor Mister Chris Pine, who will be blowing up pretty soon once J.J. Abrams’ Trek 11 arrives on the big screen. Pine is at Sundance to talk about some movie no one will see (it’s a Sundance movie, come on), but managed some Trek questions, too.

Better Quality Star Trek 11 Teaser Trailer

Not surprisingly, it didn’t take long before Paramount released better quality versions of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 11 reboot teaser trailer out into the Internet. A number of sites are hosting them now, including Yahoo! Movies. It’s still the same teaser trailer, though, showing the Enterprise under construction.
