Apparently, there is a “juicy” rumour that J.J. Abrams and company have one man in mind when they think villain for the so far officially unannounced “Star Trek 2″. Rewinding just a bit here, much of the questions asked to J.J. during the Blu-Ray release party by inquisitive and intrepid reporters is whether or not the character of Khan will be rebooted for the next installment. I think it’s a pretty sure thing.
So ComingSoon has heard a juicy rumour that the guy that would be playing the great Khan would be none other than Nestor Carbonell, who plays the venerable but well preserved Richard Albert on LOST. This is the man that would get the part if filming were to start today.
Despite my love for Nestor, I’m thinking that a few other more known actors would be considered for the role before Nestor, just for crowd drawing purposes. This certain someone would really need to be able to chew some [...]

Having been raised on the old school Trek and being of the advanced age to have actually watched the show while it was still on it’s network run, getting to know a new Spock was a little difficult.
I think Zachary Quinto did a fine job. The thing I think he missed was Nimoy Spock’s very carefully controlled sense of humour. Now I understand that Quinto Spock was young and young sometimes means taking things too seriously, but with Nimoy Spock you just felt that there was a smile always there, just under the surface of that logical mask. It was in his eyes too, that little glint.
So how did Zack Quinto end up taking the reins of the young Mr. Spock? This video tells the whole truth in complete detail. Very enjoyable. Thanks to the fine folks at i09 for the scoop.

Here’s the scene in “Star Trek” where tragic villain Nero is tortured with a brain bug by a masked Klingon dude with a sensitive side.
If this is the future of my favorite aliens I don’t like it. There ’s a lack of menace and warrior spirit in the masked guy about to insert a claustrophobic beetle into the brain case of the Romulan Nero. Brain bugs just aren’t the Klingon way. And what’s with the mask and the sensitive car commerical voice of the lead torturer? No wonder J.J. cut this scene. Anyway, decide for yourselves. Thanks Aintitcool for the score.

I’m thinking it’s a bit early in the development process for J.J. Abrams and his conspirators to be this sure of a storyline but you never know. Rebooted Klingons will still kick your sorry ass. Though uncertain of it’s origins, this fiendishly wicked Klingon propaganda film recalls the glorious days of similar Communist efforts.
In evidence is metric tonnes of singing bloodthirsty children and apt displays of the obviously superior Klingon culture. Behold the Starfleet smushing fleets of gleaming dreadnoughts patrolling the cosmos for lensflare blinding starships, recently crewed with cadets, freshly minted from Starfleet Academy.
TrekMovie has the complete forensic rundown for you inquisitive types. Is it a viral campaign to help us prepare for the coming onslaught of our forehead ridged foes? It’s way, way, way too pro to be without purpose. There’s also a website that goes with the movie. I’ll keep you updated.

I had her down as Julia Anderson for some reason. I guess the network connections between my brain hemispheres are degrading faster than I had hoped. My sincere apologies to Julia. Julia’s comment on the episode and the aftermath is long and intelligent.
Ron Moore, the man behind the greatly missed Battlestar Galactica, recently oh snapped on Trek tech and how it was basically a crutch for lazy writing. Something I wholeheartedly agree with.
To be frank, the Trek shows after the original were a pale shadow of the original series. The big bang of Trek 1 was so fierce that it’s radiating afterglow fueled all the shows to come. A few of the shows had moments but for the most part the sequels were young adult shows. Ron Moore attended the New York Television Festival as the keynote speaker and brought the truth with him. Thanks Scifiwire.
Here’s Ron talking about how NG scripts were written.
“It became the solution to so many plot lines and so many stories,” Moore said. “It was so mechanical that we had science consultants who would just come up with the words for us and we’d just write ‘tech’ in the script. You know, Picard would say ‘Commander La [...]

So obviously the first reboot of the whole Star Trek thing went pretty well. The movie made a ton of money and was sparkly and amused the muggles. I really enjoyed it when I was watching it, but thinking back, the story was a little weak. Like all primates, even the nerd of the species can be entranced by shiny things, especially when you watch it on IMAX.
Eager accountants are now pushing for a sequel to the prequel reboot. I, speaking as a fanboy, really want one too. So what now? J.J. Abrams has a pretty good track record for avoiding suck and so I am optimistic. This time we need a villian J.J., somebody we can really hiss at. Khan would be good, if the actor did it with some humour, as the best bad guys are played and come on, throw us a token Klingon or two. J.J. Abrams spoke at some length about his hopes and fears [...]

The L.A. Times recently caught up with “Star Trek” wunderkinds J.J. Abrams (director) and Roberto Orci (writer) on the Vancouver set of their TV show Fringe, and of course, the topic of “Star Trek 12″ came up. Here’s what the duo had to say about where they plan to take the sequel.
Abrams:
“The ambition for a sequel to ‘Star Trek’ is to make a movie that’s worthy of the audience and not just another movie, you know, just a second movie that feels tacked on. The first movie was so concerned with just setting up the characters — their meeting each and galvanizing that family — that in many ways a sequel will have a very different mission. it needs to do what [the late 'Trek' creator Gene] Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular [...]

How appropriate is it that the latest Star Trek film is being beamed aboard the International Space Station? Very much so, really.
Paramount sent a copy of the movie to NASA and then it was directly uplinked to the space station for the viewing pleasure of astronaut Michael Barrat and two of his crew mates. Michael Barrat credits his love for space exploration to the original series, citing it as his inspiration,
“I remember watching the original Star Trek series and, like many of my NASA co-workers, was inspired by the idea of people from all nations coming together to explore space,” Barratt said in a statement provided by Paramount. “Star Trek blended adventure, discovery, intelligence and story telling that assumes a positive future for humanity. The International Space Station is a real step in that direction, with many nations sharing in an adventure the world can be proud of.”

Maybe there’s a reason George Lucas sent his Death Star to take out the Enterprise after all. Stumbled across this video over at CollegeHumor.com, which not-so-subtly makes the case that J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Trek” is little more than a carbon copy of George Lucas’ original “Star Wars”, complete with disgruntled farm boy. You know, before he got moronic and introduced us to greedy aliens and Jar Jar Binks?
You can certainly make the case that the plot of “Star Wars” itself wasn’t exactly original, as most of the original trilogy was lifted from Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress”. And really, hasn’t the farm boy makes good plot been done in a lot of movies before “Star Wars”, and repeated since?

Big Bill wasn’t in Star Trek. I have mixed feelings about this. Or I did. Before I saw the movie I was doubtful that William could be incorporated into Star Trek without the cheese coming along with him. It would have been happy cheese no doubt (isn’t all cheese happy cheese?) but I was ready to leave some of the shlock behind when I went to see J.J. Abram’s version of the Trek.
Apparently, according to the writers of the film, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, there was a scene in there for Bill, but it was chopped out.
Their quotes, from an exclusive interview with io9.
Orci: We wrote it, it was in the script.
Kurtzman: The very last scene when Spock and Spock meet each other, finally. And elder Spock is convincing young Spock that he couldn’t interfere, because it would have diverted [Kirk and Spock] away from their friendship.
While staring blissfully with my mouth open like a slack jawed yokel during my IMAX viewing of “Star Trek” last Thursday, I paused from time to time to sport a Spock like eyebrow lift at some of the, let’s say “fascinating”, science on display in the movie.
There were a few lip pursing moments. I might have rubbed my beard and looked around at the other nerds in the audience (they were all nerds) in the hopes of catching someones eye to wordlessly beam a look of intellectual superiority.
Can a supernova threaten an entire Galaxy? Umm, no.
Will the vacuum of space make your blood boil? Bad science makes my blood boil!
The very cool Bad Astronomy blog has an in depth and detailed account of what was good and what was bad science for all you propellerheads out there. You know who you are. Thanks Gizmodo.

Yes, I am a Trek Nerd. That is well established. However, don’t tell me that when you see President Obama you don’t have Spock thoughts. He is highly Spockish and practically glows with inner Spockitude. Apparently, as reported by my favorite political site Politico, the POTUS (his Starfleet code name) must have his Trek and he must have it now. The President has requested, and will undoubtedly receive, a screening of Star Trek in the White House theatre. Also, he has met Nimoy and we have Leonard’s account of the moment.
Q: “President Obama has drawn not-infrequent comparisons to the Spock character. Do you see any similarities there?”
A: “I’ve met him twice. The first time was a couple years ago, very early on when he had just announced his candidacy. He was in Los Angeles, speaking at a luncheon we were invited to. … We were standing on the back patio, waiting for him. And he came through the house, saw [...]

On last nights Saturday Night live, Chris Pine and Zack Quinto appear with Leonard Nimoy in the Weekend Update segment talking about their fear of trekkie harassment. Is this movie just too cool for the old schoolers? Thanks Slashfilm. View it before NBC kills it.

Let’s face it, Trek hasn’t been Trek these last few years, so it was probably a good idea to go back and re-invent the wheel. Which is exactly what J.J. Abrams and screenwriters Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman (“Transformers”) have done with the blessing of the studio. And what they have done, by introducing a time-travel storyline, is to essentially remake the Trek universe for today’s audiences, complete with a young cast and the ability to do whatever they want in future Trek movies. Time travel stories have always been tricky business, but the Trek franchise has always been adept at delving into them while still maintaining their universe’s status quo at the end of each episode or movie. Not so here. Abrams and company have essentially nuked the Trek franchise, leaving them free and clear to tell whatever stories, and make Kirk and company do whatever they want from now on, free of the obligation to stick to Trek [...]

Let me say with a complete lack of humility that I am uniquely qualified to review “Star Trek” for the following reason. It was the first television program I ever watched. “Star Trek” was imprinted on me like a baby duck gets imprinted on its mother. I watched the show during its original run, via an antenna on a small trailer pointed vaguely toward Buffalo. I watched it with my grandfather. Something about the show was different and I was different after watching it.
I will spare you excessive sentimentality. I am confident you get the point. Just let me say that James Kirk is number one on my list of fictional role models and I’m proud to say it.
I went to see “Star Trek” at my local IMAX on Thursday, May 8th. I went two and a half hours early. There were people dressed in Star Fleet uniforms. There were people dressed as Vulcans and Klingons. I felt completely at [...]
