Having been raised on the old school Trek and being of the advanced age to have actually watched the show while it was still on it’s network run, getting to know a new Spock was a little difficult.
I think Zachary Quinto did a fine job. The thing I think he missed was Nimoy Spock’s very carefully controlled sense of humour. Now I understand that Quinto Spock was young and young sometimes means taking things too seriously, but with Nimoy Spock you just felt that there was a smile always there, just under the surface of that logical mask. It was in his eyes too, that little glint.
So how did Zack Quinto end up taking the reins of the young Mr. Spock? This video tells the whole truth in complete detail. Very enjoyable. Thanks to the fine folks at i09 for the scoop.

In this release we’ve got the lovely blue hued Diora Baird having none of James Tiberius Kirk’s lame excuses. Orion woman are strong baby and don’t you forget it.

Here’s the scene in “Star Trek” where tragic villain Nero is tortured with a brain bug by a masked Klingon dude with a sensitive side.
If this is the future of my favorite aliens I don’t like it. There ’s a lack of menace and warrior spirit in the masked guy about to insert a claustrophobic beetle into the brain case of the Romulan Nero. Brain bugs just aren’t the Klingon way. And what’s with the mask and the sensitive car commerical voice of the lead torturer? No wonder J.J. cut this scene. Anyway, decide for yourselves. Thanks Aintitcool for the score.

BattleStar’s Ronald D. Moore “Virtuality” has a two hour TV premiere coming up on Fox. If it hits big with those Sci-Fi kids everyone is targeting (you know who you are) we might just see it back next year as a regular series. It looks Spacey and nicely twisted. The plot unfolds thusly.
The crew of the Phaeton is approaching the go/no-go point of their epic 10-year journey through outer space. With the fate of Earth in their hands, the pressure is intense. The best bet for helping the crew members maintain their sanity is the cutting-edge virtual reality technology installed on the ship. It’s the perfect stress-reliever until they realize a glitch in the system has unleashed a virus on to the ship. Tensions mount as the crew decides how to contain the virus and complete their mission. Meanwhile, their lives are being taped for a reality show back on Earth
Virtuality airs as a 2-hour movie on Friday, June 26 [...]

How appropriate is it that the latest Star Trek film is being beamed aboard the International Space Station? Very much so, really.
Paramount sent a copy of the movie to NASA and then it was directly uplinked to the space station for the viewing pleasure of astronaut Michael Barrat and two of his crew mates. Michael Barrat credits his love for space exploration to the original series, citing it as his inspiration,
“I remember watching the original Star Trek series and, like many of my NASA co-workers, was inspired by the idea of people from all nations coming together to explore space,” Barratt said in a statement provided by Paramount. “Star Trek blended adventure, discovery, intelligence and story telling that assumes a positive future for humanity. The International Space Station is a real step in that direction, with many nations sharing in an adventure the world can be proud of.”

Maybe there’s a reason George Lucas sent his Death Star to take out the Enterprise after all. Stumbled across this video over at CollegeHumor.com, which not-so-subtly makes the case that J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Trek” is little more than a carbon copy of George Lucas’ original “Star Wars”, complete with disgruntled farm boy. You know, before he got moronic and introduced us to greedy aliens and Jar Jar Binks?
You can certainly make the case that the plot of “Star Wars” itself wasn’t exactly original, as most of the original trilogy was lifted from Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress”. And really, hasn’t the farm boy makes good plot been done in a lot of movies before “Star Wars”, and repeated since?

Big Bill wasn’t in Star Trek. I have mixed feelings about this. Or I did. Before I saw the movie I was doubtful that William could be incorporated into Star Trek without the cheese coming along with him. It would have been happy cheese no doubt (isn’t all cheese happy cheese?) but I was ready to leave some of the shlock behind when I went to see J.J. Abram’s version of the Trek.
Apparently, according to the writers of the film, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, there was a scene in there for Bill, but it was chopped out.
Their quotes, from an exclusive interview with io9.
Orci: We wrote it, it was in the script.
Kurtzman: The very last scene when Spock and Spock meet each other, finally. And elder Spock is convincing young Spock that he couldn’t interfere, because it would have diverted [Kirk and Spock] away from their friendship. And that their friendship is the key to the whole sort of [...]

There were a few lip pursing moments. I might have rubbed my beard and looked around at the other nerds in the audience (they were all nerds) in the hopes of catching someones eye to wordlessly beam a look of intellectual superiority.
Can a supernova threaten an entire Galaxy? Umm, no.
Will the vacuum of space make your blood boil? Bad science makes my blood boil!

The President has requested, and will undoubtedly receive, a screening of Star Trek in the White House theatre. Also, he has met Nimoy and we have Leonard’s account of the moment.

Let’s face it, Trek hasn’t been Trek these last few years, so it was probably a good idea to go back and re-invent the wheel. Which is exactly what J.J. Abrams and screenwriters Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman (“Transformers”) have done with the blessing of the studio. And what they have done, by introducing a time-travel storyline, is to essentially remake the Trek universe for today’s audiences, complete with a young cast and the ability to do whatever they want in future Trek movies. Time travel stories have always been tricky business, but the Trek franchise has always been adept at delving into them while still maintaining their universe’s status quo at the end of each episode or movie. Not so here. Abrams and company have essentially nuked the Trek franchise, leaving them free and clear to tell whatever stories, and make Kirk and company do whatever they want from now on, free of the obligation to stick to Trek [...]

Let me say with a complete lack of humility that I am uniquely qualified to review “Star Trek” for the following reason. It was the first television program I ever watched. “Star Trek” was imprinted on me like a baby duck gets imprinted on its mother. I watched the show during its original run, via an antenna on a small trailer pointed vaguely toward Buffalo. I watched it with my grandfather. Something about the show was different and I was different after watching it.
I will spare you excessive sentimentality. I am confident you get the point. Just let me say that James Kirk is number one on my list of fictional role models and I’m proud to say it.
I went to see “Star Trek” at my local IMAX on Thursday, May 8th. I went two and a half hours early. There were people dressed in Star Fleet uniforms. There were people dressed as Vulcans and Klingons. I felt completely at [...]

Good Day New York has a nice interview with J.J. about the big “Star Trek” opening tomorrow. He goes into some detail on the selection of Chris Pine and his feelings about William Shatner’s feelings about not being in the movie. I like that a real Star Trek fan is doing the interview. Thanks to reader Rowdy for the tip.

Eric Bana, who plays bad guy Romulan crazoid Nero in “Star Trek” opens up on some behind the scenes info, including a passionate display of apoplexy!
I’m curious about your movements in character. You’re very aggressive and strong, did you come up with any of those reactions and jumps yourself or was it all planned out?
Some of them were a bit spur of the moment. It was a pretty intense character. I passed out, I think, once during one of the takes, I got so carried away. Lost about twenty seconds, down on the floor, and got up, and the camera was still rolling and it was like, “I guess I just continue now.” Um yeah. It was pretty crazy.
I can’t believe you passed out on set! How did you stay that cranked up on set?
You get used to it. The reality of it is you just ebb and flow. There are times during the day when you’re really really peaking, [...]

I might be taking this “Star Trek” movie a bit too seriously. The Onion reports on how Star Trek fans are outraged that our (my) beloved Sci-Fi fetish doesn’t suck, isn’t boring and features no nerdy bits that will make normal movie goers cross-eyed with fatal propeller-headed overload.
We can overload ourselves in our own time. Star Trek belongs to all people. A wider audience means more Trek. Via Gizmodo.

Here’s another in the endless string of pre-release “Star Trek” trailers. I can only say that they surely must be confident that this movie is a winner. Overexposure is not their concern. This trailer has some new looks at engineering spaces within the great ship called Enterprise. Buy your tickets ahead of time kids.
