I have my issues with TNT’s “Falling Skies” TV show, and frankly, the only reason I’ll even bother with the second season when it premieres this Summer is because, damn, what else is there on TV? There’s a pretty big shortage of quality sci-fi shows, so I guess we better appreciate what we have, right? Terry O’Quinn joining the cast should make the show a little more bearable, even if it is just for a few lousy eps. The former “Lost” star, who has been making time on another beach in “Hawaii Five-0″, will be trading in the fun and sun for the battlefields of “Falling Skies” in the show’s Season 2. O’Quinn is scheduled to show up for a two-episode arc (the last two episodes of the coming season) as a former history professor and mentor to the show’s lead, Tom Mason, played by Noah Wylie. Hopefully it’ll be more than a, “Hey, remember when I used to teach [...]

The Syfy Channel is apparently still in the original science fiction TV business. Who would have thunk it? They have “Alphas”, “Warehouse 13″, and “Haven”, but for the most part their line-up is pretty much taken up with cheapie Reality TV shows and wrasslin’. They do still show reruns of your more popular sci-fi shows, but I’m guessing that’s because they bought the rights years ago, back when they were actually a sci-fi channel, and, well, mind as well use it. The cable net’s latest venture is, shockingly, not reality TV-based whatsoever, and is instead an original sci-fi show called “Rewind” from feature film writer Justin Marks (the man who gave us the legendary “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li”). Syfy has committed to a 2-hour pilot for “Rewind”, which will revolve around “a team of military field operatives and civilian scientists who must use untested technology to travel back in time to alter past events in order to change [...]

Check out the full pilot episode for “17th Precinct”, and sigh at what could have been. “17th Precinct” starred a bunch of former “Battlestar Galactica” castmembers, including Tricia Helfer, Jamie Bamber, and James Callis. (“Smallville’s” Kristin Kreuk was also added to the cast later.) Everyone has since moved on to other shows, so it looks unlikely “17th Precinct” will ever actually get on the air now, so this will probably be your first and only look at the show. I gotta admit, it sure looks … different. I guess it was TOO different for the network. After all, we’re talking about a TV landscape that includes 500 clones of “CSI”. And for Amy Pond and her husband Rory, their time as the Doctor’s latest companion has just about run out. According to “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat himself, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will be leaving the show after this upcoming season, with a new companion expected to be introduced. The final days of the Ponds are coming during the next series. Then The Doctor will meet a new friend. Although she’ll be giving up her companion role for, one presumes, a happy homemaker life with Rory as a plain ol couple, Amy Pond and her futuristic daughter River Song (Alex Kingston) will be showing up every now and then, we’re told. Check out three clips from the upcoming episode, “The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe.” Is that kid supposed to look like Harry Potter on purpose? Or maybe it’s just how all British kids look? Eh, who knows. Evacuated to a house in Dorset from war-torn London, Madge Arwell and her two children, Lily and Cyril, are greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world… Matt Smith, of course, returns as the good Doctor. And it doesn’t exist. Located a mere seventy-five miles outside of Las Vegas in Nevada’s desert, the base has never been acknowledged by the U.S. government-but Area 51 has captivated imaginations for decades.
They’ve already made meth fashionable. They’ve even made period shows about admen actually watchable. Now the cable network will be adding UFOs and aliens to their line-up, with AMC buying the sci-fi drama “Thunderstruck” from writers Paul Boardman and Scott Derrickson. The sci-fi drama will tell the story of “powerful and enigmatic entities that begin appearing all over the world. After one shows up in the town of Great Falls, Montana, the local citizens must grapple with the dramatic effects and growing mystery of repeated visitations.” David Eick (above) of “Battlestar Galactica” fame will be involved with the show in some capacity. Tonally, the show aims to be fun but grounded, with everything in it operating within the realm of possibility.” So I take it aliens are not part of the mix? Then again, who knows what kind of angle they could take with a weekly TV show, since the movie starring Damon didn’t exactly look like it could support a weekly, episodic structure. In any case, following in recent news that Duncan Jones’ “Source Code” was being translated to a weekly TV show, the Syfy channel has now made a deal to turn Damon’s “The Adjustment Bureau” (based on a short story by Philip K. A fantastic, chaotic battle between Alphas and Government shooters in a warehouse caps off the episode, which also introduced two major new characters — Lee Rosen’s estranged daughter and a new Big Bad who should prove to have staying power. Literally. The guy is like an immortal, apparently. What I’ve always appreciated about Zak Penn’s “Alphas” is that it has zero interest in the status quo. Penn seems to be running the show like he has a limited amount of time to tell his story, so each episode moves the storyline along at a pretty satisfactory clip. There were a couple of filler episodes here and there in the show’s 11-episode first season, but for the most part [...]

Dear Hollywood: despite what you may think, not every teenage boy out there is an annoying little prick suffering from uncontrollable, mysterious teen angst. And certainly not after you’ve sent him a gazillion million years into the past through a fancy schmancy time portal/gateway doohickey, and to a world surrounded by mysterious wonders, dino-friggin’-saurs, and the like. Other than that, there’s a lot to like about FOX’s new sci-fi/dino show “Terra Nova”, but also a lot to groan about. “Terra Nova” is a show that is so expensive per episode it’s rumored that a first born is sacrificed each time a new episode is shot. That may be a tad hyperbolic. A tad… Set a hundred or so years in the future, on a planet Earth where the shit has royally hit the fan thanks to our poor environmental management (i.e. Al Gore was right), humanity now wallows in pollution as if the entire world was Los Angeles.
