Stephen King himself mentioned earlier this month that his latest book, the gargantuan tome “Under the Dome” (the book clocks in at a respectable 1088 pages) will be headed to the small screen, and now we know a little bit more about the project: besides King, the project will, in all likelihood, headed to a cable network in limited series (aka mini-series) form courtesy of Steven Spielberg and his Dreamworks studio.
Variety reports that the TV division of Spielberg’s Dreamworks has optioned the King novel, and will be looking to create an “event series” based on it. This will be the second time King and Spielberg have worked together, counting the author’s “The Talisman”, which has yet to reach the screen, though IMDB.com has it listed as a possible mini-series in 2010.
King’s “Under the Dome” revolves around the drama that unfolds after an invisible force field suddenly and without warning descends on a small vacation town in Maine. Cut off from [...]

The boys at “South Park” always likes to toss in a big Hollywood movie parody or two in their episodes. Last week they took a swipe at James Cameron’s “Avatar”, and this week it’s Roland Emmerich’s disaster epic “2012″. In the episode, the boys go to the local Splash Town-ish water park, where Cartman gets incense at all the minorities there, while all the peeing in the water results in a massive tsunami of, well, pee destroying the park in a “2012″-ish sequence. It’s all very silly and completely over-the-top ridiculous — you know, like the actual movie.
Watch the full episode here.

NBC’s canceled “The Listener” starred Craig Olejnik as a telepathic paramedic who uses his gift to solve crimes. That’s a nifty little premise, but I never got around to watching it, and apparently neither did anyone else. I never knew when NBC was showing the show, so it just flew by its first season and was summarily canceled when not enough people tuned in. The Peacock network may not have had any faith in the show, but the Canadians think otherwise.
Variety reports that “The Listener” has received a 13-episode Season 2 order from Canada’s CTV network and its sister sci-fi/fantasy cable channel Space, while Fox International will handle the show’s international distribution.
Ratings for the show in the States were abysmal, but like all genre shows, I’m sure there are fans in the States hoping for a U.S. channel to pick up its second season. According to Shaftesbury chairman-CEO Christina Jennings, whose company produces “The Listener”, they’ll concentrate on producing [...]

It’s a brave new world in America, as Anna and the Visitors prepare to establish official diplomatic ties with the Government, thanks in part to a willing media led by the very bias reporting of Chad Decker (Scott Wolf). Meanwhile, the Resistance of Two – aka FBI Agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Father Jack (Joel Gretsch) — continue their quest to find strength in numbers. Step one: find everyone who was at the warehouse that fateful night, including the AWOL Georgie (David Richmond-Peck). For his part, former V sleeper soldier turned human sympathizer Ryan (Morris Chestnut) goes in search of the remaining members of the V Fifth Column, a group of V rebels now scattered to the wind. As we learn toward the end of tonight’s episode, “A Bright New Day”, you just never know when those spunky Fifth Columns will show up next. While last week’s episode was a paranoid, tightly-wound continuation of the pilot, “A Brave [...]

Check out some new promo images from this week’s new “Stargate: Universe” episode, 1.09, “Life”, which features former “24″ CTU badass Reiko Aylesworth as Ming Na’s lesbian lover character. The whole sex and lesbian thing? I could care less. But the whole “jumping into someone else’s body and then going to have sex with someone else” angle? That just gives me the creeps. Big time. Surely, this is going to become an issue in future episodes, right? Say, a “No more having sex with other people while you’re in someone else’s body” rule? Or not, because it sure seems to keep happening. What happens if, er, they impregnate someone? Or catches an STD? I’m just saying.
Ever since it was announced that “Lost” was going to the great DVR in the sky, viewers have been seeking a successor to the science fiction/mystery/drama/paranormal series. So far, “V”, “Flash Forward”, and thanks to the bizarre antics of judge Bruno Tonioli, “Dancing With The Stars”, have all arrived to try to give viewers their weekly fix of the strange and unexplainable. Now AMC throws their hat in the ring, with a brooding re-imagining of “The Prisoner”, and it just may be one of the season’s best yet.
“The Prisoner” opens with a man waking up in a mountainous desert area. He can’t remember who he is, where he is, or how he got there. In his disorientation, he sees an elderly man running from guards. Before dying, the old man gasps a message, to tell 554 he found a way out. Out of where? Who is 554? The man soon finds out, when he awakes in a hospital and [...]

Despite the inconsistent beginning to Stargate Universe, I’m beginning to think, after last nights planetary bombardment of wicked called “Time”, that we may really have a Sci-Fi show that wants to be something good. “Time” had some of the classic elements of a really memorable episode for any Sci-Fi show. Let’s review.
I was deeply confused. A landing party of non Redshirts gate into an alien jungle hellhole. They’re looking for food apparently. All the action is captured by floating ballcam Kino. People start feeling a little woozy. A quarantine of sorts is arranged. That night, as the healthy tend to the sick, nasty leech like screeching chest burrowers drop out of the jungle and begin to chomp on a few of the lesser known crew members. The danger is wicked and real. The only problem with all this is the previews that we saw either at the end of last weeks tepid “Earth”, or during our travels here at The [...]

Mr. King himself has announced, during a book signing for the so far fantastic “Under The Dome”, that “Under The Dome” will be hitting televisions via HBO. We are not sure when. “Under The Dome” recounts the tale of a small town in Maine that for some unexplained reason (I’m only 115 pages in) gets covered by an impenetrable dome force field. Also, King has finished writing the script for “The Cell”, a zombie book for the modern world about a viral telephone call that turns people into (at first) mindless machines of angry and then later, components of a giant hive mind. Stephen King is an awesome Sci-Fi writer.
We reported this week that J.J. Abrams won’t be tackling the “The Dark Tower” series as reported. Someone else will have to hit that and whomever does may soon have to include a new “Dark Tower” book into the works as King revealed in the video below that another book in [...]

The idea of a “Gattaca” TV show sounds like a winner when I first heard it, but the idea of turning Andrew Niccol’s perfectly honed world into another generic TV cop show on TV? Aw, man, I don’t know, that sounds, well, generic to me. In any case, Gil Grant, who has been assigned to adapt the movie into a TV show for producer Denis Leary recently talked to MTV about his approach to the show.
Grant confirms that Andrew Niccol has nothing to do with the show, will probably have no involvement whatsoever, and for better or worst, Grant plans to introduce a more procedural cop show vibe into “Gattaca”. Grant is no stranger to procedural shows, having worked on the incredibly dull but unfathomably popular “NCIS” shows, as well as the more enjoyable “24″.
“I came up with a world which is populated with Valids and Invalids, the same premise [as the movie], but taken into a police department [...]

The second episode of ABC’s new “V” show dropped in the ratings — which is both expected and a little bothersome, according to THR. The bothersome part is that the show was down 27% from its record-setting pilot last week, a notable drop as it marks the largest fall from a premiere for a scripted show all season. The good news? Last week’s numbers were record-setting for a reason, so a drop in numbers from week one to week two was entirely expected.
In all, “V’s” second episode, “There is No Normal Anymore” was watched by 10.7 million viewers and drew a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49. According to THR, those are respectable numbers for a new show, and if the show can maintain it, ABC will realize they have a potential hit on their hands. Or at the very least, a stable show capable of building momentum.

I don’t know what it is about the show, maybe it’s the complete uselessness of the Green Arrow character (really, did this guy ever actually manage to win a single fight on the show? because he sure looks like the world’s slickest punching bag in the three episodes I’ve seen him in), or the overly goofy Lois Lane-Clark Kent romance, or the unGodly boring Tess Mercer stuff… Anyways, I really didn’t plan to watch another episode of “Smallville”, but this news may change my mind.
Let’s face it, this isn’t that much of a surprise. The ratings have been abysmal, even with some positives from time-shifted numbers, Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse” never really took off as Fox had expected, or was hoping for after giving it a year two commitment. As it turns out, maybe they should have saved “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” instead — or perhaps, it wouldn’t have mattered anyhow. Of course, it didn’t help putting the genre show on a night that has been given somber nicknames like Friday Night Death Slot and Graveyard Shift. That’s like going on a date with someone name “Body Odor Bob” and then wondering why he smells.
In any case, the official word comes from THR, who reports that the network has officially closed the door on any further adventures of Eliza Dushku and the Dollhouse gang. The network also confirms that the show will return to the airwaves with all-new episodes on December 4th as planned. [...]

So what do you do after you’ve killed your partner of seven years and discovered that he was actually a space alien in disguise? For FBI agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell), it means lying through her teeth when her boss and the FBI wonder what’s happened to agent Dale Maddox (Alan Tudyk, who gets two brief cameos in tonight’s episode). There’s good news and bad news for our FBI heroine: the bad news is that Erica, as a good liar as she is, has a very insightful boss (Roark Critchlow) who sees holes in her story, but the good news is that the Visitors know how to cover their tracks. By the time the FBI shows up at the warehouse where the fledging human resistance and Visitor commandos threw down at the end of the pilot, there are no traces of a fight or bodies. Erica is safe … for now. Meanwhile, Father Jack (Joel Gretsch) struggles about what to [...]

Sometimes when an actor is interviewed for a movie or television show that is about to air, you can tell when they think the thing is actually really bad. Of course, pushing the show is something they are contractually required to do. Lying well is an art that takes time. In the case of James Caviezel and Jamie Campbell Bower, playing Six and Eleven and perhaps Twelve, when they say “The Prisoner” is really good, you can tell they speak the truth.
Here’s an interview they did for San Diego television. They are true believers. “The Prisoner” also stars the triumphantly awesome Ian Mckellen and begins this Sunday on AMC. Thanks io9 for the scoop.

I’m all for allowing a show to gradually introduce itself as much as the next guy, but all the survival arcs in the first seven episodes of “Stargate: Universe” is starting to wear a little thin. And it’s not as if they’re even slowly introducing new characters with each episode; we already know everyone that matters, which left a lot of really pointless filler stuff like the characters coming home (okay, I like the Eli homecoming scene, but do we really need two of Young and Chloe?), going to clubs (clubbing!) and bedding the ex-wife while you’re a gazillion miles away on an alien ship, nevermind all the implications of your wife having sex with another man, even though it’s you in his mind, but it ain’t you, if you know what I mean. BRRRRRRRR. That episode still gives me the creeps.
Anyways, it feels like things are finally turning on the show with this week’s new episode, “Time”, which has [...]

The Prisoner, starring Ian McKellan and Jim Caviezel hits the airwaves this Sunday on AMC. It is going to rock. That’s my prediction. Forget the on and off quality of your recent Sci-Fi fare. Flash Forward, Fringe and SGU might be wobbling, but this show, a 6 hour miniseries retelling the classic 60’s paranoid dream, is gold people.
Study the latest trailer to get a foreshadowing of just how screwed up your head is going to be after digesting 6 hours of life in The Village.

This is actually getting pretty amusing. As you’ll recall, last week we posted a blog posting by “Stargate: Universe” producer Joseph Mallozzi, who fired back at critics of “SGU” through his blog. Today, SciFiWire has another intriguing fight with another “SGU” producer over the show, except this time “SGU” producer Brad Wright is picking the fight not with fans, but with a newspaper columnist who dared to call his show anything but great.
So, it begins with Chicago Tribune’s TV reviewer Maureen Ryan writing this during her positive review of ABC’s new show “V”:
(And let’s face it, we sci-fi fans are a frequently disappointed lot. ABC hasn’t quite managed to quite recapture the magic of “Lost” with any of its subsequent genre-flavored offerings. “FlashForward” still seems like a show that is more about its concept than its characters. And the other notable fall genre offering, Syfy’s “Stargate Universe,” is a boring, poorly plotted, lamentably sexist mess.)
Brad Wright apparently reads reviews on [...]

Five preview clips from “V’s” Tuesday episode, 1.02, “There is No Normal Anymore”. My favorite clip: Erica stumbling into Father Jack at the FBI, and her priceless quote, “You’re a friggin’ priest???” Love it. Also, Chad the reporter realizes he just sold his soul to the devil, and more alluring V girl action with Laura Vandervoort and Morena Baccarin. Plus, alien wounds are yucky.
