The best TV spots or trailers I’ve seen from the film so far. If the movie itself is as this action-packed, then sci-fi/action fans may be in for a treat. It’s probably not, though. Right? It couldn’t possible be one action sequence after another. Lynn Collins as the warrior Mars Princess is also really growing on me. She’s what the kids would call purty. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, [...]

This is probably a little too wacky to be really sci-fi, but it’s Nazis from space, and who doesn’t like that? I know I do. It looks to be completely campy, though, so I wouldn’t put too much serious thought into its premise or its less-than-subtle attempts at political “satire”. I mean, it’s Nazis from outer space! Anyways, new theatrical trailer and poster for your Nazi lovin’ pleasure below. Towards the end of World War II the Nazi scientists made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity. From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. This base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right. Now it’s 2018, and it’s the time for the first American Moon landing since the 70′s. Meanwhile the Nazi invasion, that [...]

In case you missed it, here’s the Super Bowl TV spot for George Lucas’ “Star Wars” re-releases in 3D. It’s hard not to get excited when you hear the music start up and the sound of lightsabers humming. Those are such iconic sounds, especially if you’re a sci-fi movie geek. Of course, then you realize that you’ll have to see that Godawful “The Phantom Menace” first, and the enthusiasm sort of dims somewhat. Can you just see the last 20 minutes of the film? I wonder if you can get a discount if that’s all you really want to see. Hell, I’ll settle for the Jedi-Darth Maul duel. The rest? Ugh. Even now, years later, still … UGH. Star Wars menaces theaters again (in 3D) starting this Friday.

I’m always down for discovering a new sci-fi movie that I’ve never heard of before. Here’s one: Wayne Slaten’s “Patriot Act”. The teaser doesn’t really give away too much, but here’s a little helpful synopsis to fill in some of the holes: Kane is a retired member of The Legion, a hit squad responsible for the extinction of an alien race. Set in a future communist America, Kane must now hunt a renegade Dropa alien intent on killing the former members of his team. Sounds like fun times. IMDB.com doesn’t list any cast, but you can keep track of the film at its Official Site and Facebook page. It definitely looks like it’s worth following up on. Hopefully we’ll see more in the future.

Easily the best trailer for “John Carter” yet. It doesn’t only have a ton of new footage stuffed into its minute-long running time, but it’s a lot lighter, fluffier, and goofier trailer. Happier and more fun, if you will. That’s what I want in my sci-fi movies about guys transported to strange alien worlds with four-armed dudes carrying swords, and this trailer delivers that. Good stuff. I ain’t got nuthin’ to do and you probably don’t, either, or else you wouldn’t be reading this totally lame and pointless writing that I’m typing right now. Yes, right NOW. So go on, watch the 20-second teaser, you know you want to. “John Carter” is a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars) and is based on a classic novel byEdgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film, directed by Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton, tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). You don’t see much of Cobra himself, but I guess that’s the point. So what’s this Cobra guy all about? Set in the far future, the series tells of a man called Cobra, who lived an adventurous life until his enemies began to hunt him down. Cobra surgically altered his face and erased his own memory in order to hide from his foes and lead a normal life. He soon regains his memories and re-unites with his old partner Lady Armaroid and his ship Tortuga. Cobra travels the galaxy, fighting the outlaw Pirate Guild, but also fleeing the law-enforcing Milky Way Patrol.
You gotta figure that given the Japanese’s love for all things sci-fi, “Battleship” and “John Carter” should do reasonably well in that country. The studio probably realizes that, too, because here are two specially made Japanese trailers for the two upcoming sci-fi films. Japanese movie star Tadanobu Asano is actually in the cast of Peter Berg’s “Battleship”, and although he’s featured in the trailer, I’m surprised he’s not featured more. Seems like a wasted opportunity to pander to the home crowd if you ask me. “John Carter” opens March 9, 2012, followed by “Battleship” on May 18, 2012.
