Abrams Officially Signs on to Direct Star Trek 2

You know, the reboot of the franchise? Well, J.J. Abrams, who directed the first reboot, has officially signed on to direct the sequel.

I never doubted that he would.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, along with Damon Lindelof, will write the script. Everyone is expected back, including Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, and the rest.

New Images and a Clip From The Thing Prequel

The Thing (2011) Movie Image

Still don’t think there’s any reason to remake/make a prequel to John Carpenter’s “The Thing”, but whatever, they’re doing it, so deal, I guess. New images from the prequel below. Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks cute as all heck, but the movie doesn’t look that great. The clip, in particular, screams generic cheese. But that’s the problem with prequels, isn’t it? You already know where they’re going and how they’ll end.

New Real Steel TV Spot, Clip, and Featurette

Real-Steel-2011-Movie-Outdoor-Banner

Well? You feeling the real steel yet? Me, I’m kind meh on this. Looks like decent family entertainment, but when you’ve got giant robots doing battle, I kinda wish it wasn’t in the ring. You know, maybe on an alien planet or something. It just seems like all that big ass studio budget is going to such waste…

Steven Spielberg Will Bring About The Robopocalypse in 2013

When Steven Spielberg goes sci-fi, I’m always interested. Unless it’s sci-fi where sci-fi shouldn’t be, like that last “Indiana Jones” movie, but let’s not talk about that. Anyways, it’s officially official: Spielberg will direct “Robopocalypse” as his next movie, with the film scheduled for July 3, 2013 — just in time to cash in on the July 4th weekend.

Vin Diesel Updates Riddick With New Concept Artwork, R-Rating Promise

Vin Diesel in The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) Movie ImageAccording to Vin Diesel via his Facebook page, “Riddick” will indeed by R-rated, and pre-production is still going strong on the movie, with director David Twohy back to direct. Plus, he dropped this nifty little concept artwork from the movie showing hero Riddick looking very up to his eyeballs in blood and death and no doubt, lots of carnage.

Gillian Anderson Gives (Probably Unwarranted) Hope for an X-Files 3

Gillian AndersonAccording to Gillian Anderson, one-half of the Scully/Mulder combo that have become part of your paranoid sci-fi lives in the last 20 years or so, a third “X-Files” movie may or may not be coming to you in 2012. Or at least, she “hopes” it will. Which basically means, she has no idea, she just hopes it’ll happen.

No!!!!!! George Lucas Continues to Tinker with Return of the Jedi

Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi

George Lucas is releasing the entire “Star Wars” franchise onto Blu-ray for the very first time on September 16, 2011, which is a good thing. Well, for the original trilogy, anyway. I don’t really care to see the three prequels in Blu-ray or any other format, thank you very much. (Okay, there is ONE good moment in the entire prequels — the Darth Maul fight at the end. Other than that? Eh. Do not want.)

More Glorious Behind-the-Scenes Images from Transformers: Dark of the Moon

It’s usually not our m.o. to post movie pictures from a movie that’s already been released, but these are just so cool, I had to toss them up here. MichaelBay.com has posted a bunch of new pictures from Bay’s “Dark of the Moon” by photographer Robert Zuckerman. Some of the pics were already released as official stills, but there’s a HUGE pile that weren’t. Check out some of the more enticing ones below, and head over to Bay’s site for the rest. Regardless of what you thought of the movie, you gotta admit, there are some pretty incredible shots here.

Syfy Remaking The Philadelphia Experiment

The Philadelphia Experiment (1984) Movie PosterI recently saw the Michael Pare-starrer “The Philadelphia Experiment” a few months back, just out of curiosity to see if it holds up. It, uh, doesn’t. That’s to be expected, though, since most ’80s sci-fi movies usually don’t hold up very well many years later. In any case, I still thought the premise was pretty cool, and apparently the Syfy Channel feels likewise, because they’re remaking the movie as one of their infamous “original” movies of the week.

Run, Katniss, Run! First Hunger Games Teaser Trailer Arrives

Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games (2012) Movie Image

I’m still not sure how sci-fi this movie is going to be. If they follow the book, it should be reasonably sci-fi, with invisible cameras, crazy hybrid creatures, and invisible jets and ships and what have you. Whatever the case, here’s your first teaser trailer for “The Hunger Games”. See? You didn’t even have to watch the MTShitty Video Awards to see it, too.

New International Trailer for Andrew Niccol’s In Time

Justin Timberlake in In Time (2011) Movie Image

I am really digging the feel of Andrew Niccol’s “In Time”. Check out the latest, International trailer for the movie, which has a definite Bonnie and Clyde vibe going on.

Forget the Blade Runner Remake, Ridley Scott Wants to do a Sequel!

Or possibly a prequel, the way he’s going at it with his “Alien”/not-”Alien” prequel “Prometheus”. Either way, Ridley Scott, Godfather of bleak dystopian futures, has made a firm commitment to taking charge of any future “Blade Runner” properties, agreeing to produce and direct a new installment in the franchise for Alcon Entertainment.

Riddick 3 Plot Details, Spoilers, and Such

The folks at MovieHole have gotten their hands on some casting notices and plot details from Vin Diesel and David Twohy’s upcoming “Riddick”, their sequel to “Pitch Black” and “The Chronicles of Riddick”. I suppose shortening the title to just “Riddick” is the way to go, though it might actually confuse people who don’t already know it’s a sequel to two existing movies. Then again, considering the clunky nature of “The Chronicles of Riddick”, maybe that’s not such a bad idea after all.

Walter Koenig Reveals the Possible Return of Babylon 5 – UPDATED

Update: JMS says Koenig “misspoke”, and that he is not “in negotiations with WB to develop more Babylon 5.” Sigh. You can read his Twitter post here.
