Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing Neill Blomkamp’s breakthrough hit “District 9″ on standard DVD and Blu-ray December 22 2009 (just in time for the sci-fi fan in your household, natch). Starring Sharlto Copley and produced by Peter Jackson of “Lord of the Rings” fame, the “Alien Nation”-esque movie took the box office by storm when it was released, and garnered mostly positive critical reviews, which translated into excellent box office recripts, making it one of the few sci-fi moves released in 2009 that can make that boast. Young Indiana Jones Grows up to be a Space Bad Guy in Scavengers
Sean Patrick Flanery in any movie is worth picking up. I’ve been a fan of his ever since he put on the fedora for George Lucas’ short-lived TV show “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”, and continued to be one through “Suicide Kings” and the “Boondock Saints” movies (catch the sequel in theaters if you’re so inclined). Flanery’s latest is playing the bad guy in a sci-fi action movie called “Scavengers”, which will co-star Louise Linton (below) as the female lead.
Nic Cage Wants to Teach You the Ways of the Force. Er, Sorcery.
I have to admit, this trailer for “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is a lot cooler than I thought it would be. Then again, it could just be the melding of techno music with all that sorcery happening onscreen. Nicolas Cage actually looks decent in the role, but there’s one thing the movie misses out on — it neglects to show us the va-va-vooming Monica Bellucci, who co-stars in the movie. Really, guys, when you have someone as gorgeous as Monica Bellucci in your movie, what are you doing NOT showing her? For shame, for shame.
Gears Of War Game Plot Too Depressing For A Movie
There’s a “Gears Of War” movie adaptation on the way, directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld) and produced by the awesomely named Wyck Godfrey. Good old Wyck believes that the main storyline of Gears, where nasty burrowing termite creatures packing heat dig themselves up out of their subterranean lairs to pew pew and maybe feast on nice human colonists on a planet far, far away, is a little too depressing for current events. “Gears of War” really takes place after aliens pop out of the ground and centers around a small squad of hardened soldiers as they try to stay alive in the urban wasteland that remains. Wyck would like to see and film the popping part. Less depressing.
Latest Avatar Poster
James Cameron’s “Avatar” arrives next week, December 18. Yes, you heard that correctly. After hearing about it, talking about it, reading about it, and seeing snippets of it for what seems like forever, the whole shebang will finally, at last, arrive in theaters next week for you to pay to see. Excited yet? If not, here’s the latest poster, made for the movie’s IMAX screening. It doesn’t look too bad. Overly photoshopped, but not too bad. Via Impawards.
Is Josh Brolin Joining the Men in Black?
Fresh of the success of “No Country for Old Men”, Josh Brolin is a wanted man. In Hollywood, that’s a good thing. It’s when no one’s speculating you for a movie role, that’s when you know your career is in trouble. Thanks to that breakthrough part, Brolin has landed leads in the comic book Western “Jonah Hex”, the sequel to “Wall Street”, and has a remake of “True Grit”, also with the Coen Brothers coming up. And if all goes according to plan, he might also play an MIB agent in “Men in Black 3″ for Sony, according to the LATimes.
A Grab Bag Of Mindless Destruction In SyFy’s Annihilation Earth
I had to spell check annihilation. I am deeply ashamed. If one Sci-Fi blogger out in the endless wastes of the Internet should be able to spell that word, it’s me. This has been an behind the scenes view of the moment to moment action in the life of a Sci-Fi blogger on an especially slow news day.
PBS Goes To Pandora With Sigourney Weaver
I’m trying very hard not to post every single “Avatar” video or preview I find floating around on the Internets for a very selfish reason. Since I have to watch the thing to see if it’s suitable for you out there in the Sci-Fi community I will inevitably end up seeing a goodly amount of all the choice inner bits of what I’m really , really hoping is going to be a fantastic ride.
Two Full Scenes from James Cameron’s Avatar
Cineplex has two full scenes from James Cameron’s “Avatar” that you probably haven’t seen before. The first scene is completely new, but the second scene is a continuation of the Thanator chase we saw earlier. I have to say, I’m still not sold on the CG work. I mean, it looks impressive, but can CG really ever replace live flesh-and-blood human beings? I’m not so sure. The film is being heavily hyped as the movie that will change moviemaking, and I think that’s putting way too much pressure on it. In any case, see for yourself December 18, a short two weeks from now. Yes, “Avatar” is coming in less than two weeks. Wow, time flies, huh? Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and directed by James Cameron.
Jeff Bridges Talks About His Technical Duality In Tron 2
So far, “Tron 2″ secrets are pretty hard to find. We’ve seen a tiny teaser trailer with some wicked light-cycle battles and we have a vague idea about what’s going to go down, but I imagine it’ll be awhile before we get any real juice. Principal photography is finished but the likely to be ridiculously awesome effects won’t be finished until, like “Avatar”, just before the film is about to get reeled.
The International Poster For Iron Man 2
I always find it interesting how marketing guys tailor their promotions for a movie depending on which side of the pond the movie will play. Like the International poster for Iron Man 2 for instance. I thought that the first poster, released this week depicting Tony in armour back to back with War Machine, would have been plenty acceptable for all. Instead, for the International set, we get Tony brooding in the Iron without the helmet.
Duncan Jones’ Source Code Sounds Familiar, But Still Awesome
Wanna know more about Duncan Jones’ upcoming sci-fi film “Source Code”, starring Jake Gyllenhaal? You’ve come to the right place, and you should keep reading. Does the movie sound interesting to you, but you’d rather avoid POSSIBLE SPOILERS? Then stay clear of this page. You’ve been warned.
New Trailer for Bekmambetov’s Black Lightning Looks Familiar
Basically, it’s like “Spider-Man”, but instead of web shooters and superpowers, our hero has an old car that can fly. That’s pretty much the plot of the Timur Bekmambetov-produced movie “Black Lightning”. A second, Russian trailer for the film has appeared online, and it introduces the movie’s romantic elements — in short, the blonde is Mary Jane, and the hero is Peter Parker, and the mean looking Russian guy who kidnaps Russian MJ is the Green Goblin. They even end the movie with a duel (using flying cars!) in the skies over Russia at night, with Russian MJ’s life at stake. Plus, our hero has a suave, rich buddy who has everything our hero wants, but can’t have, being that he’s poor and such. And is that my imagination or did they also throw in a scene where our hero rescues someone from a burning building — with his car? Personally, I’m waiting for the scene where our hero hangs upside down while strapped into his old car and leans out the sun roof to kiss the girl in the pouring rain. Or, er, pouring snow. It is Russia, after all.
Vin Diesel Hints that Chronicles of Riddick Sequel is Gearing Up
Apparently when Vin Diesel talks, he likes to say “Haha”. I mean, I’ve never actually seen someone type “Haha” as often as Vin Diesel does, but I suppose the man does it in real life, so it naturally translate to his typing. Or at least, that’s what I surmised from these entries at his Facebook account, where Vin Diesel has not only been hinting at a “Chronicles of Riddick” sequel on the near horizon, but seems to actually be saying it’s going to happen, and soon.
Peter Berg’s Battleship Movie Will Feature Aliens. Spider-y, H.G. Wells-ish Aliens.
Apparently someone over at Universal is really anxious to get the fanboys on the side of their “Battleship” movie with Peter Berg, because they recently flew a bunch of bloggers to an honest to goodness battleship to talk to Peter Berg about the upcoming movie. On a private yet, no less. (Gee, I guess my invitation got lost in the mail. Stupid mailman, always losing my studio invitations.) According to Berg, his vision of a live-action “Battleship” movie will, indeed, involve an alien war as we’ve heard. Which means, er, I guess they’re expanding just a tad from the game.
