Open Discussion Thread: Avatar

After all the awaiting, all the wondering, and all the anticipation, James Cameron’s “Avatar” is finally here. The film, estimated by some to have cost over $500 million to make, opens today and insiders are already predicting a box office in the $200 million dollar range. And let’s face it, if you even dare call yourself a sci-fi fan, you’re going to go see this movie.

The Iron Man 2 Trailer Has Arrived

To hell with the preview of the preview, the maximum velocity “Iron Man 2″ trailer has hit the world and it’s ridiculous. I’m feeling some Rocky 3, Mr. T against a gone soft Rocky flavour here with Mickey Rourke playing the garage builder, chip on his shoulder Russian and Tony Stark gone even more Hollywood. You’re going to love it. Catch it for now in sweet HD via Apple.

Iron Man 2 Preview Preview With Some Added War Machine

Entertainment Tonight has a preview coming up tomorrow giving us the inside scoop on how “Iron Man 2″ is going to rock. If you’re like me, you went into the first Iron Man with low expectations. Obviously, I left the theatre loving it. Big shoes to fill for the second installment. I get the feeling that writers and directors know that audiences are expecting story and character in their super hero films. Judging from the preview, looks like we’re on track. So this is a preview of the preview. It has enough tasty bits in there to wet your whistle for the big one tomorrow that we’ll try to bring you. Thanks ComingSoon.

The 10 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The Past Decade

It’s the end of the first decade of this new Millenium. The singularity is at hand. The oceans are swelling and even I, your resident prescient sage can only imagine what lies ahead for us. For the first time I really feel like we made it. We’re really living in the future. Science is no longer something we have to go to. It’s not once removed from our daily existance, it’s now in us and all around us and the super science future of nano, quantum, robotic and bio is just right there , inches away.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception Poster

The first official poster for Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi/crime film “Inception”, his follow-up to his mega hit “The Dark Knight” has landed online via FusedFilm. Written and directed by Nolan, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio (in case you can’t read), Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard. Warner Bros. has been trying desperately to keep the film’s plot shrouded in mystery, but you probably know about it, and then some if you’ve been reading us for a while now.

Three New Images from Percy Jackson and the Olympians

“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” is the latest in a long line of big budgeted teen-centric fantasy movies vying for the title of “the next ‘Harry Potter’ franchise”. I’m not sure if “Percy Jackson” will make it, but here are three new images from the movie that probably won’t convince you either way. The film stars Uma Thurman, Logan Lerman, Rosario Dawson, Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd, Catherine Keener, and Alexandra Daddario.

Character Posters For The Book Of Eli

Distracted as I am with all this sketchy “Avatar” business, I just about forgot that Denzel Washington is about to get busy striking down layabout evil wanna be post-apocalyptic King Gary Oldman in “The Book Of Eli”. I saw an early review that said that “Eli” is a little cheesy. No matter. How can this movie not be good? Denzel Washington, among the coolest men to ever live channels the very coolest, Clint Eastwood, as he lays the lone drifter smack down, samurai style, on a world full of villains intent on depriving Denzel of the “Book” that may be the key to the future survival of all that makes human civilization worth living for. The stunning Mila Kunis plays the girl sent by the horrid Gary Oldman to secure the “Book” from Denzel with her awesome powers of gorgeous. Here we have three character posters for you, showing Denzel, Mila and Gary in all their heroic, lovely or evil dripping glory. “The Book Of Eli” hits theatres Jan 15th. Thanks Scifiwire for the scoop.

Hey Look, It’s A New Iron Man 2 Pic!

One of the reasons I loved “Iron Man” (and there were plenty) was how real the tech looked that Tony Stark put together. It actually looked feasible and that put a powerful surge into my permanently engorged geek gland. “Iron Man 2″ looks to give us more of the same. How many of you out there dream of having a lab of such glass and glowing magnificence down some spiral staircase in your home by the sea? Here we have a new pic of Tony Stark, gadgeteer, tinkering away madly with his unlimited budget and over-sized brain. Oh and cool goggles too! Thanks ComingSoon.

Frank Miller Ejected from Buck Rogers Movie

Let’s face it, this was coming, especially after the disaster that was his live-action screen adaptation of “The Spirit” — Frank Miller, according to producers, no longer has any ties to the upcoming “Buck Rogers” movie from Paradox Entertainment. That’s according to the studio’s producer, Fredrik Malmberg, who tells IGN that Miller is no longer involved in the movie in any capacity.

Trade Reviews for James Cameron’s Avatar

The reviews are coming in for James Cameron’s “Avatar”, and the word seems to be that it’s a winner. The special effects are proving to be as industry-changing as we had heard throughout the film’s production, even if the movie’s “Dances with Wolves”-inspired storyline is a tad on the less-than-subtle side. The film officially opens today in the UK, so UK readers will have already seen the movie by the time this post goes up. If you have seen the movie, let us know what you think.

James Cameron Sets The Record Straight On His Next Sci-Fi Project

Yesterday, all the scuttlebutt was that James Cameron was soon to direct a kind of seven samurai in space film from a script written by Shane Salerno maybe called Doomsday Protocol. While this may one day come to pass and will likely be pretty sweet, James Cameron himself spilled the beans on his next dip into the salty Sci-Fi seas. On the red carpet, during the London premiere of a small indy film James just finished called “Avatar”, James scoffed at this idea and said that he will be producing a new film soon based on Fantastic Voyage. Fantastic Voyage is about a team of intrepid science types that get miniaturized by a probably evil Soviet scientist and injected, with spaceship, into a human with issues.

Did Thomas Dolby Spill The Beans On A New Star Wars Movie?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. There’s more Star Wars movies coming. It’s just a matter of time. George Lucas is 66, still well preserved but he is getting up there and he just cannot be immune from the critical beating that the last trilogy took from fans. I think he wants another go at it and my bet is that more films are in development right now.

New Poster And Pic For TRON: Legacy

“Tron: Legacy” is still a ways away yet but you know that time can fly. It’s also relative. Of course, the more excited you are for something to happen, the slower time will pass. This is a tried and tested position of mine based on many years of wanton geek and exuberant nerdhood, awaiting the opening or release of “Empire Strikes Back”, “Avatar” or Santa.

District 9 DVD Cover Art and Specs

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing Neill Blomkamp’s breakthrough hit “District 9″ on standard DVD and Blu-ray December 22 2009 (just in time for the sci-fi fan in your household, natch). Starring Sharlto Copley and produced by Peter Jackson of “Lord of the Rings” fame, the “Alien Nation”-esque movie took the box office by storm when it was released, and garnered mostly positive critical reviews, which translated into excellent box office recripts, making it one of the few sci-fi moves released in 2009 that can make that boast. DVD cover art and specs below.

Young Indiana Jones Grows up to be a Space Bad Guy in Scavengers

Sean Patrick Flanery in any movie is worth picking up. I’ve been a fan of his ever since he put on the fedora for George Lucas’ short-lived TV show “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”, and continued to be one through “Suicide Kings” and the “Boondock Saints” movies (catch the sequel in theaters if you’re so inclined). Flanery’s latest is playing the bad guy in a sci-fi action movie called “Scavengers”, which will co-star Louise Linton (below) as the female lead.
