Some Serious Details On The Thing Prequel

John Carpenter’s “The Thing” was a gruesome work of Sci-Fi/Horror art. Think Ridley Scott’s “Alien” but with ice, isolation, paranoia and a nasty shapeshifting beastie with big teeth. It was wonderful. “The Thing” had a great cast too with Kurt Russell leading the lot in his cool way to their eventual doom.

Duncan Jones Moon Followup Source Code Adds Farmiga And Monaghan

Fresh off the creative success of “Moon”, starring Sam Rockwell, Duncan Jones is about to bring us another probably awesome Sci-Fi work called “Source Code”, about a guy, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, that is injected back into time to relive the moments of a commuter on a train about to be bombed so that he can figure out who done it. Can’t wait.

Peter Sarsgaard Gets The Green Lantern Villain Gig

Joining the “Green Lantern” team of already established players such as Ryan Reynolds (Canuck and hubby of Scarlet Johansson) and Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) comes Peter Sarsgaard portraying a villain that comes upon his powers in the oldest and truest of Sci-Fi traditions, the funky glowing meteor. Martin Campbell of “Casino Royale”  fame will direct in the tale of  a man that through brightest day and blackest night never lets evil escape his sight.

No Playing Cowboys and Aliens for Robert Downey Jr. After All

Robert Downey Jr. donning a cowboy hat and gunfighter’s rig fighting aliens in the Wild West would have been awesome on so many levels. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. The LATimes reports that Downey has now left the Dreamsworks sci-fi action movie, which was set to reunite “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau with his star. Favreau will remain on the project as director, but Downey, who some speculate may be leaving “Cowboys and Aliens” for a fast-tracked “Sherlock Holmes” sequel, will not.

Mila Kunis Interviews On The Book Of Eli

Mila Kunis is a girl I know only from That 70′s Show, where she did something I’m sure that I don’t remember clearly. In the upcoming few years we’ll get to know her a great deal more intimately starting with the opening this week of the Hughes Bros. and Denzel Washington’s “The Book Of Eli”. On press day for Eli, the boys over at Collider got a few minutes with Mila to discuss “The Book Of Eli” and her prep for the film as well as the awesomeness that is Denzel. A snip:

Star Trek Sequel Gets An Official Release Date

We all knew it was coming, the inevitable return of those hard trekking space-goers, Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest of those intrepid lens flare illuminated crewmembers. I was hoping for next year but I’m afraid we will all have to wait until 2012 in the early summer to see what happens after a crew, fresh out of driver training get to be in charge of The Enterprise, the flagship of Starfleet. I can see the Klingons rubbing their hands together and sharpening their Daqtagh now. Will we get Khan into the game as well? I’m hoping so. No J.J. Abrams officially on board yet. Thanks AintItCool for the news.

A New Clip For Splice Showcases Maggoty Romance

“Splice” is a little Sci-Fi horror film coming out shortly that was assembled by none other than Guillermo del Toro, a man of many monsters. It stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as two propeller-heads that gene splice creatures together to see what horrid abominations they can birth into the world from their cold test tubes.

James Cameron Confirms Avatar Sequel

Considering the fact that “Avatar” is a printing press for money and is now the most successful Sci-Fi movie in history, a sequel is likely a good bet. But James Cameron is a man that marches to his own beat so you can never be really, really sure…until he confirms it himself  and he did last night at the Arclight theatre in L.A. in yet another screening for “Avatar”. There was a Q&A after the film with James and a couple of effects guys. James Cameron officially gives us notice with the quote:

Avatar is Now the Most Successful Sci-Fi Film of All Time

Well, that didn’t take long. Less than four weeks after it debuted in cinemas around the world, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic “Avatar” has become the highest grossing science fiction film of all time, and second only to 1997′s “Titanic” in terms of all movies. “Titanic”, of course, was also written and directed by Cameron. That means when James Cameron once declared himself “King of the World”, apparently he wasn’t kidding.

Neill Blomkamp Talks About What’s Up Next After His District 9 Success

Neill Blomkamp made the kind of magic happen that every Hollywood studio dreams of. He made a movie that was really cheap to film look like it cost a ton and he made it tasty enough for it to score big at the box office.

Estate Of Phillip K. Dick Threatens Google Over Nexus 1

I knew this was coming. Did you hear? Google just released a new “Superphone” and it’s pretty nifty or so I’ve heard. They’ve decided to call it the Nexus One. Now I think it’s pretty obvious here that since Google has called the operating system in the phone (and in many others) Android and now their own personal phone the Nexus One, that this is a direct reference to the line of Replicants in the greatest movie of all time, a film called “Blade Runner”. This tickles me to death actually. Someone had to start the ball rolling. We start with the Nexus One and then progress through the many layers and folds and versions of hardware and bioware until eventually we get to Roy Batty’s supreme badness with the Nexus Six.

Robert Downey Jr. And Jon Favreau To Begin Filming Cowboys and Aliens In July

This July, Iron Man 1 and 2 director Jon Favreau and his star Robert Downey Jr. meet up again, this time to start punching film for “Cowboys And Aliens”, working from a script by Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof  that they adapted from Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley’s graphic novel.

French Director Pierre Morel Gets Taken with Dune

For the longest time, Peter Berg had his eye set on adapting Frank Herbert’s “Dune” for Paramount, but with Berg gearing up the alien-based “Battleship” movie and the Navy SEALs true story “Lone Survivor”, the studio has been looking for a replacement, and it seems like they’ve found their man in Pierre Morel. For those who aren’t familiar with the name, Morel was the director of last year’s breakthrough sleeper hit “Taken” with Liam Neeson, and he’s got the John Travolta action movie “From Paris with Love” due out early this year.

Duke Nukem Forever Movie Teaser Trailer? Probably Not.

More likely a couple of kids got together and came up with this little “movie teaser trailer” starring everyone’s favorite alien-blasting FPS from the ’90s. The YouTube page where the vid is posted calls it a “teaser trailer” for a “Duke Nukem Forever” movie from HMCIndie, but I haven’t heard anything about it. It also looks like they shot the whole thing in Russia somewhere. See for yourself.

Prequel To John Carpenter’s The Thing To Start Filming In March

“The Thing” is right up there alongside “Alien” as among the very best Sci-fi/Horror flicks ever stamped on film and the prequel, floating around in the dreams of Universal bosses for some time, is about to start filming in March in sunny Toronto. In the original, science types in Antarctica led by Kurt Russell encounter a dog being chased by some crazy Norwegians in a helicopter. After the Norwegians accidental blow themselves up with a charge meant for the dog, the American scientists chock the whole thing up to some bizarre Nordic sport and take in the poor puppy. The dog turns out to be a really nasty shape-shifting alien from a crashed spaceship the Norwegians dug up.
