Just in time for its 30th anniversary, check out a new trailer for Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner”, generally considered the #1 sci-fi movie of all time. Or if it isn’t, it’s pretty damn close. Season One of Star Trek: The Next Generation Lands on Remastered Blu-ray

Nix July 12, 2012

“Star Trek: The Next Generation” on TV looks like what it is — a sci-fi show from the ’80s. Mind you, there’s nothing wrong with that. I personally dig that about it. But from the looks of this Blu-ray release, due this July 24th, the geeks have really spruce up the joint, with a new remastered Blu-ray transfer and all manner of bells and whistles. Check out the trailer to get a taste. Welcome to the enterprise! Star Trek: The Next Generation comes to life with the brilliantly re-mastered first season in high-definition, available on Blu-ray on Tuesday, July 24. The new HD transfer with pristine before/after results boasts exclusive special features including never-before-seen archival footage, brand new interviews with key players, gag reel and more! Buy it on Blu-ray. But enough talk! Trailer ahoy:

Fox Announces a Special Limited Edition of Alex Proyas’ I, Robot on Blu-ray This October

Nix July 11, 2012

I’m not the biggest fan of Alex Proyas’ “I, Robot”, and I’m pretty much a fan of most things Proyas does, from “The Crow” to “Dark City” to even a little known indie film called “Garage Days” that he did back in his native Australia. “Garage Days” isn’t sci-fi, but it’s pretty rad, I recommend you check it out anyway. But if you happen to be a fan of Proyas’ “I, Robot”, starring Will “Big Willy” Smith and Bridget “The Former Mrs. Tom Brady” Moynahan, then you’re in luck, because Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has plans to re-release the film on Blu-ray (a 2008 version is already floating out there). I’m guessing the new Blu-ray release will be, you know, new and such. But perhaps the big news is that geeks attending Comic Con this week will be able to order a groovy Special Limited Edition Collectibles version of the Blu-ray featuring an “I, Robot” head that, we’re told,… Continue Reading »

E.T. Phones L.A. with a Free Screening

Nix June 16, 2012

Well, it’s free. Why not dress up, grab a bike, and go out for a screening? Plus, it’s L.A. People are just naturally weirder in L.A. Last night (June 15, 2012), fans of Steven Spielberg’s iconic film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial celebrated the film’s 30th Anniversary and upcoming release on Blu-ray at a free outdoor screening in conjunction with the LA Film Fest presented by Film Independent at FIGat7th in downtown Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition gathered dozens of bicyclists to pay homage to the famous film scene where Henry Thomas’ character Elliot rides his bike with E.T. by recreating that moment near the entrance of the event. 13-year-old Daniel Oakes led the charge with an E.T. plush in tow. Hundreds of fans also paid tribute to the film by donning commemorative red sweatshirts as they watched the screening. “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” lands on Blu-ray for the first time in October, 2012.

E.T. Finally Comes to Blu-ray

Nix May 30, 2012

I guess you can expect to see every film eventually make their way to Blu-ray sooner or later. Unless, of course, another format shows up and makes Blu-ray obsolete, the way Blu-ray did to DVD. (DVDs are obsolete now, right?) Anyways, check out the box art and full specs for Steven Spielberg’s “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial”, getting the Blu-ray treatment 30 years later In 1982, E.T. Nominated for nine Academy Awards® including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Writing and Best Screenplay, the film took home four statuettes for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Sound and Best Music for John Williams’ (Jaws) memorable score. First Look at the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-ray Release

Nix April 30, 2012

Good God, has it been almost 25 years since “Star Trek: The Next Generation” debuted? Yup. And since then, we’ve head three — count’em, three — new “Star Trek” shows since. So you may be asking yourself — when will they finally release “Next Generation” on Blu-ray already? As it turns out, soon. Very soon. July 24, 2012, to be precise. Check out some details and a clip from the remastered pilot episode below. You’re only getting the first season for now, but that’s only because the task of remastering the original episodes are so monumental. (Remember, the show is over 25 years old.) To get the show converted for high def Blu-ray, every frame of the original camera negatives had to be rescanned, and each episode has been reconstructed using archived script and editors notes from 25 years ago. Wow. Now that’s work. Check out a clip from one of the episodes:

Skyline DVD and Blu-ray Cover Art and Specs

Nix January 24, 2011

Admittedly, I was a little disappointed with the Brothers Strause’s “Skyline”. It had its moments, but overall, I really expected more out of it. Oh well, maybe the sequel will be better? So what are the chances of a sequel? Not bad, actually. Made for $10 million (“low budget” in Hollywood terms), the film has grossed over $65 million worldwide, with $43 million of that coming from overseas. In my book, when your movie grosses six-times what you put into making it, that’s a hit. Or at least, a pretty good excuse to make a sequel. Until then, Universal Studios Home Entertainment will be releasing the film on Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital Download and On-Demand on March 22, 2011. Cover art and specs below. It was supposed to be a simple birthday weekend in Southern California. But when sunrise arrives two hours early in the form of a haunting light from an unknown source, a group of friends watch in terror… Continue Reading »
