SteamPunk is a brilliant alternative parallel Sci-Fi universe. It’s a place where Charles Babbage and his difference engine ciphers a life’s probabilities by gaslight and all your darkest clockwork dreams are realized. If your imagination isn’t always enough to make these visions come to life, the artists and video makers at the fantastic CGSociety have announced the winners of it’s SteamPunk: Myths and Legends Contest. Do yourself a favour and enjoy the winners there then see what else this fantastic artists venue has to offer, especially in it’s CGChoice galleries.

Unless you were too busy daydreaming about football this Sunday, you were probably sitting at home (or you might have heard about it on the news) watching the 2008 Oscars telecast and watching Pixar’s latest, the sci-fi-themed “Wall-E” take the Oscar home in the Best Animated Feature Film category. The category was pretty slim pickings this year, with “Wall-E” up against “Bolt” and “Kung Fu Panda”. The Oscars website has the acceptance speech by “Wall-E” director Andrew Stanton. It’s below. My producers Jim Morris and Lindsey Collins should really be up here to accept this with me. I have to single out Ed Catmull, John [...]

I don’t really pay all that much attention to genre awards shows like the Saturns, especially now, since they’ve added categories like “Best Action/Thriller”, etc. What the hell? I thought the Saturns was just about science fiction and fantasy? When did they start nominating movies like “3:10 to Yuma”? I don’t know, it’s not like I keep up with the history of the Saturns. In any case, here are the nominees for the 2008 (34th Annual) Saturn Awards for those who are interested in such things. More info can be found at the Saturn’s official site. FILM NOMINATIONS Best Science Fiction Film Cloverfield (Paramount) Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (20th Century Fox) I Am Legend (Warner Bros.) The Last Mimzy (New Line Cinema) Sunshine (Fox Searchlight) Transformers (DreamWorks SKG / Paramount) Best Fantasy Film Enchanted (Buena Vista) The Golden Compass (New Line Cinema) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Warner Bros.)
