Superman and Batman: bad guys? What madness is this? Well in a world where Lex Luthor is President, anything’s possible. That’s the background premise of “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies”, the most recent D.C. direct-to-DVD movie starring their two biggest icons.
If you’ve seen D.C.’s recent spate of DVD movies, you probably won’t be surprised that “Public Enemies” has no interest in regurgitating the origins of its characters. The filmmakers assume you already know who Superman and Batman are, and it’s a justifiable assumption: there seems little chance of Joe Blow Non-Comic Book Reader picking up the DVD. As a result, the film jumps right into its storyline: Luthor is President, and has all but outlawed superheroes except those working for the U.S. Government, i.e. him. Superman and Batman remain the lone hero holdouts. The front and center storylines of “Public Enemies” has a giant meteorite composed of Kryptonite headed right for Earth, and Superman being framed for murder by Luthor.
The script for [...]

It hasn’t been easy finding a decent D.C. Comics live-action movie without the words “Bat” or “Knight” in the title nowadays. Luckily for fans of the veteran publishing house, the company has found other ways to bring their famous characters to life – direct-to-DVD animation. The latest is “Green Lantern: First Flight”, directed by Lauren Montgomery, who is no stranger to the D.C. verse, having previously helmed the company’s animated movies for Wonder Woman and Superman. There are good reasons to go this route while the live-action movie versions gestate in studio development hell: the animated form allows filmmakers to remain loyal to important facets of the source comic books without having to concern themselves with budget. In the case of the mostly space-set “Green Lantern: First Flight”, that’s a very good thing. Everything else, unfortunately, not so much.
“Green Lantern: First Flight” wastes no time introducing us to Hal Jordan (voiced by Law and Order: SVU’s Christopher Meloni), a test [...]

You have Jessica Biel in a movie and it’s just her voice? What a waste. Oh well, at least there are some funny bits in this first trailer for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s latest kiddie movie, the CG flick “Planet 51″. The movie sees Johnson playing an astronaut who lands on an alien planet. It’s basically a 1950s comedy, except we’re the aliens and the aliens are us. Get it? Anyways, first trailer for the film below.
The inhabitants of Planet 51 live in fear of alien invasion. Their paranoia is realized when an astronaut arrives from Earth. Befriended by a young resident, he has to avoid capture in order to recover his spaceship and try to return home.
Starring the voice talents of Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Gary Oldman, John Cleese, and Rupert Degas. Directed by the trio of Jorge Blanco, Javier Abad, and Marcos Martinez.
The invasion begins November 20.

Just got in two new images from David Bower’s CG movie “Astro Boy”, based on the popular Japanese character. Still not sure if this thing will piss off more fans than it creates, but the first image, with Astro Boy confronting a giant robot, looks very cool.
A thrilling tale of a true hero, Astro Boy is an all-new, feature film full of action, adventure, humor and heart. It will be brought to life on the big screen in breathtaking CGI animation on October 23rd, 2009. Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist named Tenma (Nicolas Cage). Powered by positive “blue” energy, Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore) is endowed with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly. Embarking on a journey in search of acceptance, Astro Boy encounters many other colorful characters along the way. Through his adventures, he learns the joys and [...]

The CG animated movie “Planet 51″ has a pretty nifty premise: what if there are other alien life out there, and they regard us as the “alien invaders”? The premise actually sounds a bit like “Battle for Terra”, except I believe “Planet 51″ is all comedy, while “Terra” is all “human sucks!” with a serious face. New poster for the movie after the jump.

If you have the time in your busy day to wonder at something very beautiful, let me please recommend this SteamPunk short film, nominated for both an Oscar and a British Academy Of Film And Television Arts award.

Set in a world of iron dirigibles and steam powered computers, this gothic horror mystery tells the story of Jasper Morello, a disgraced aerial navigator who flees his plague-ridden home on a desperate voyage to redeem himself.

It is truly a wonderful piece of work and deserves your attention. Thank you very much, Quiet Earth.

I love the fact that many of the new cars I see coming off the lines are starting to look like the concept cars I have been seeing on the cover of pulpy Sci-Fi novels for years. The designers imagine these cars, but in the past the brain dead executives in charge of the car companies have refused to stick the real rubber and chrome on them and get them on the road.
I have a new Honda civic, with the multi-leveled dash and the cool FI themed blue lighting. It is my little spaceship. When I am alone, sans female, I occasionally make little spaceship sounds as I whiz about George Jetson style. Caution, you can’t have a female in the car if you want to make spaceship sounds.
Below is the Audi Shark, a concept Hovercraft that won an Audi design competition. It comes from visionary designer Kazim Doku. It is bad-ass. Put some fins on it and it has [...]

Humanity strikes again in the CGI animated movie “Battle for Terra” from Canadian director Aristomenis Tsirbas. The film is set in outer space, where the last remnants of humanity, now living on a ship, are forced to seek out a new planet after having already used up Earth. There will be a lot of preaching about the environment and how we humans are such a miserable, conniving, and destructive bunch, but at least it’ll also have cool CGI space battles.
Mala (Evan Rachel Wood) is a precocious girl living on the beautiful planet Terra, a place where peace and tolerance are celebrated. Unbeknownst to Mala and her fellow Terrians, the last inhabitants of Earth have exhausted the resources of their planet and those of three others, and are now searching for a new home. This Earthforce has discovered that the use of a Terraformer will make Terra habitable for humans but poisonous for Terrians. When the Earthlings embark on a hostile [...]

If you weren’t bowled over by how funny the trailers were, then you probably don’t have a pulse. And I’m usually not one to go for these comedy kiddie animated movies, either, but I gotta admit, this has the potential to be another “Finding Nemo” or “Toy Story” and not “Iron Giant” or “Titan AE”. The trailers are hilarious, if that’s any indication.
When a meteorite from outer space hits a young California girl named Susan Murphy and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years. As a last resort, under the guidance of General W.R. Monger, on a desperate order from The President, the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction!

No word on how big a “role” that is yet, or even the plot of the sequel. Also, here’s the latest trailer for the animated sci-fi comedy “Monsters vs. Aliens”.

——-*——-
Finally, ever wondered what that annoying Mac Vs. PC commercial would be like if the computers could come alive and actually duke it out instead of letting the fat guy and the skinny kid blab away? Apparently someone else did, too, and they cut the fight to the “Terminator” theme, which is pretty cool.

Merry Christmas for those of you who celebrates it, and Happy Holidays for those of you who don’t!

I’ve never actually seen any of the Astroboy cartoons or read the mangas, so I can’t tell you if this English version of the Astroboy character (or what little we see of it in this very short teaser trailer) bears any resemblance to the original character. What I do know is that, well, this is probably very kid-friendly, so anyone over 10 probably won’t have much use for it, unless that is, you grew up with the character, in which case you’ll probably find things to nitpick about it. Then again, my nephew is 7, and this teaser didn’t do a whole lot for him, either. Oh well. Here’s your first look at a moving Astroboy, coming in 2009.
A thrilling tale of a true hero, ‘Astro Boy’ is an all-new, feature film full of action, adventure, humor and heart. It will be brought to life on the big screen in breathtaking CGI animation on October 23rd, 2009.

I’ll be damn if the new Dreamsworks CGI flick “Monsters vs. Aliens” doesn’t look like it has all the makings of another major international hit for the company. I’ve always thought that “The Incredibles” by Pixar was one of the best CGI movies I’ve seen, and although I’m not sure if “Aliens vs. Monsters” will approach that other movie’s many levels of pure entertainment, it could come close. Or at least, it’ll be really funny. Although I think the title should probably be, “Monsters vs. Alien”, as from this trailer for the movie, all I really see is a bunch of monsters fighting one alien dude in an indestructible ship. But hey, I guess “aliens” sounds better. In any case, “Monsters vs. Aliens” hits theaters March 2009 according to the voiceover guy at the end of the trailer.

Although I kind of enjoyed the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off show Angel for a while there, I never really got into the Buffy show itself. I don’t know, it just never really appealed to me. But man, do the show’s fans love it. I mean, these guys are fanatical about the show and its universe. Which is probably why they were all ga-ga over the possibility that Joss Whedon, their God and King, was making an animated TV series based on the Buffy character. But alas, the show never made it to air, although a 3-minute trailer of shorts (more like the first 3 minutes of a scripted episode) was produced, although no one has been able to get their hands on it.
Scratch that. Someone got their hands on it and put it up on YouTube, and the guys at Geeks of Doom sniffed it out. So here it is, animated Buffy in action.
Well, it’s got that snappy dialogue [...]

From Heroes to Astro Boy? It would seem to, as news from SuperheroHype is that Kristen Bell (you may know her as Elle Bishop on Heroes, or Veronica Mars on the show, well, Veronica Mars) has landed the leading female role in the movie “Astro Boy”. Well, she’ll be landing her voice, anyway, as “Astro Boy” is a CGI animated movie. And not just any movie, either, a pretty big one, if the cast already assembled is any indication. They include Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Bill Nighy, Nathan Lane, Eugene Levy and Freddie Highmore as Astro Boy himself. Now that’s a cast!
More about the CGI flick from SHH:
Set in futuristic Metro City, Imagi Studios’ Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist to replace the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving father’s expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot [...]

George Lucas and company have released more images from their upcoming “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” movie in front of the film’s impending August 15, 2008 release date. Now those of you who have seen the cartoon show that the movie is based on probably won’t feel this way, but man, the animation style on this thing is kinda freaky. Seriously, the characters look like marionette dolls minus all the rope. The creepiest part of the characters are the faces. Wow, I mean, this thing might give me nightmares. Anyways, more new pics from the image below.
The Clone Wars are raging between the Separatists and the Galactic Republic. When Jabba the Hutt’s son is taken by a group of renegades, two Jedi are summoned to investigate. Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi depart in search of answers: where is the Hutt’s son, and who is controlling this mysterious renegade group? Yoda sends Ahsoka Tano along as Anakin’s apprentice, Obi-Wan duels Asajj [...]
