So what’s been going on with the live-action versions of “Robotech” and “Cowboy Bebop”? Not a whole lot, as both movies seem to still be in the very early stages of development (i.e. scripts are still being written), but AICN finally has updates for both movies.
On “Robotech”, a new writer has come onboard in Tom Rob Smith, a UK-based writer. He will be contributing to a script that has recently gone through the hands of some notable names, including Lawrence Kasdan and and writing partners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (TV’s Smallville). “Robotech” is being envisioned as as starring vehicle for Tobey Maguire of “Spider-Man” fame. Which reminds me, with Maguire now committed to a fourth movie, it doesn’t look like “Robotech” is going to happen anytime soon, at least if Maguire wants to star as well as produce this thing.
The “Cowboy Bebop” movie, on the other hand, seems to actually be moving forward. Writer Peter Craig has already [...]

It looks like Tobey Maguire’s “Robotech” live-action movie is still moving forward, this time there’s news that the project has nabbed its writers — Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of the WB’s Smallville TV show, which followed the adventures of a pre-Superman Clark Kent. The duo recently just bailed from the aging TV show (seriously, how long is Clark Kent going to keep pretending to be a teenager? Isn’t the actor playing him like 30 or something by now?), and recently contributed to the most recent “Mummy” film, as well as Maguire’s “Spider-Man 2″. So yeah, they know how to write superheroes is what I’m trying to say.
From THR:
A sprawling sci-fi epic, “Robotech” takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race [...]

Yeah, I’ll admit, the idea of a Robotech live-action movie gets me into all kinds of good mood. The kind where I run around and punch babies, and when their mom complains, giving them a nice pinch on the bottom. Yup, that kind of good mood. To add further to my good mood, here’s a rumor that Lawrence Kasdan, renown writer of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “The Empire Strikes Back”, among many, many others (he also wrote and directed “Silverado”, one of the best cinematic Westerns out there), has been drafted to pen Tobey Maguire’s “Robotech”.
Someone at CHUD knows a guy who knows a guy that tells them that Kasdan has been given scripting duties on “Robotech”. They aren’t confirming it, it’s just what someone told them. Obviously this may not end up being true, or just what it is — a rumor.
But you know what? That’s not going to stop me from running around punching [...]

I love me a good old-fashion post-apocalyptic movie. Just ask anyone who knows me. Heck, I’m even one of the few people that liked Kevin Costner’s “Waterworld” and “The Postman”. Yes, I liked both movies. So what of it? The latest post-apocalyptic movie headed to the big screen is “Afterburn”, based on a comic book (pictured, below) by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood from new comics company Red 5 Comics. And none other than Tobey Maguire (pictured, left), Spider-Man himself, is planning on ushering the comics into a movie, and will be producing with partner Neal Moritz.
More:
The book, whose first issue hit stands in January, is a sci-fi adventure set against the backdrop of a postapocalyptic Earth, whose Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated from radiation and fallout. The story revolves around a group of treasure hunters who for the right price extract such objects as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone [...]
