Okay, so they’re not ALL fighting clips. There are a couple of just talking clips. A couple of kissing clips. And a couple of negotiating clips. But yeah, there is one or two that involves actual fighting. Robot fighting! A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, “Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback. Starring Hugh Jackman, [...]

Looks like decent family entertainment, but when you’ve got giant robots doing battle, I kinda wish it wasn’t in the ring. You know, maybe on an alien planet or something.
Anthony Machie (“Hurt Locker”) and Evangeline Lilly from Lost have just been added to the robot gladiator epic “Real Steel” alongside Hugh Jackman. In “Real Steel”, a boxer (Jackman) falls on hard times when fighters are replaced by cold unfeeling robots. To make matters even more depressing for him, he discovers he has an 11 year old son. He turns to droid combat promotion and finds a robot that looks like trash but fights like Ali. Sounds heartwarming. There better be some creative robot destruction. Machie plays another promoter while Lilly looks like the love interest. Thanks Slashfilm for the news.

D.J. Caruso is directing “Four,” which adapts the upcoming young-adult science fiction book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes. The story centers on one of nine aliens (played by Alex Pettyfer) who escape their home planet before its annihilation by a rival species and hide out on Earth disguised as high school students. Durand is playing the commander of the aliens who are hunting the survivors down on Earth. “Steel” sees Shawn Levy directing Hugh Jackman in the tale set in a future in which robots fight it out in the boxing ring.
It has been confirmed that Hugh Jackman has been tapped for the Dreamworks production of “Real Steel”, a film based on the Richard Matheson (The Button) story about an ex-fighter that turns to the sport of robot on robot gladiatorial combat to make ends meet. Since he’s poor and can’t afford decent buzzsaws and giant pincers, he must turn to the scrapheap where he magically finds a droid that has the pluck to win! The original Richard Matheson story was turned into a Twilight Zone episode so it can’t be as Disney as it sounds. Apparently, the budget for this movie is only 80 million. Speculation abounds that you just can’t make a Sci-Fi movie these days for such a ridiculous pittance. Leslie Bohem (Taken) and John Gatins (Summer Catch, Dreamer) rewrote the script based on the original by Dan Gilroy (who was paid 850,000!) Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum series, Cheaper By The Dozen, The Pink Panther, Just [...]

Director Shawn Levy has revealed more about his upcoming sci-fi movie “Real Steel”, which is being described as “a father/son action drama set in the near future, surrounding the sport of robot boxing.” If that sounds familiar, it may be because the movie will be based on a short story by the prolific sci-fi/fantasy writer Richard Matheson (“I am Legend”, among many, many others), who previously adapted his story into a “Twilight Zone” episode in 1963 called “Steel”. In the interview, Levy says that the movie won’t be an all-out robot action movie ala “Terminator” or “Transformers”. He also confirms that the top candidate to headline the film is Hugh Jackman. Levy is known primarily as a comedy director, so this will be his first non-comedy role. Which is good news to anyone who was afraid Levy might turn this thing into a PG-rated gagfest ala the silly and over-the-top “Battle at the Smithsonian” movies.
Battling robots? You mean like Rock’em Sock’em Robots? Um, not quite. The movie is called “Real Steel”, and at one point “The Kingdom” director Peter Berg was attached. Berg has now moved on, leaving the space open for Shawn Levy. The idea behind the futuristic actioner sounds cool enough, but there are some caveats. For one, Peter Berg directing a futuristic sci-fi action movie about battling robots would have been the height of gritty sci-fi action cool. Shawn Levy? The man behind the “Night at the Museum” movies? Hmmm. Even the THR article mentions a potential “change in tone” for the movie. I.e. from serious to more kiddie action-adventure. There’s nothing wrong with that, but check out the premise for “Real Steel”, and tell me what you would prefer: [The "Real Steel"] story line takes place in a near future where human boxing has been outlawed, and heavy, humanoid robots slug it out in the ring instead.
