Italian director Gabriele Muccino, known primarily in Hollywood as the director of Will Smith Oscar Bait aka “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “Seven Pounds”, has come onboard the Keanu Reeves sci-fi love story “Passengers”. Reeves was already onboard the Morgan Creek production, which is set for a summer start date, but now with Muccino attached, the project is halfway home. The film finds Reeves playing a passenger on a spacecraft making a centuries-long interstellar voyage to a new planet, but due to a glitch, is awakened 90 years too early. Still uncast is the female love interest, who in the film is awakened by Reeves’ character in order to keep him company. At this point, I’m not sure if “Passengers” is strictly a drama that just happens to be set in space, or if there’s more to it. The writer is Jon Spaiht, who recently wrote the “Alien” prequel that Ridley Scott is attached to direct, so hopefully there’s more [...]

Our man Neo will find love in the inky blackness of space if he gets his way in a new film he is developing for Morgan Creek called “Passengers”. Keanu will play a crewman on a long haul space cruise where everyone is in the deep freeze, metabolically speaking. 90 years before his unthaw date, Keanu awakens and is oh so alone. What’s a spaceman to do? Pick a pretty face and unthaw her thats what. Sounds easy but is ethically challenged. What if he doesn’t like her? She might also be a trifle unhappy at being awoken. What if she doesn’t like Keanu? Will she unthaw someone else? Oh the dramatic possibilities. Thanks Variety for the heads up.
