Hey, they’re not Jessica Chastain, but they’ll do. Now that Chastain has dropped out of his sci-fi movie “Horizons”, Tom Cruise and writer/director Joseph Kosinski has replaced her with Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko. Well, not that the two actresses will be playing one role, but rather, one of them will be playing the role originally set for Chastain. Ahem. The project, formerly known as Oblivion and Horizons, is a love story taking place in an apocalyptic future where most of the population lives in clouds since the Earth is no longer habitable. An Earth-bound repairman whose job it is to work on drones that fight alien life forms meets a woman who forces him to question his world view. In the film, former Bond girl Kurylenko will play Cruise’s lover and partner, while Riseborough is the new woman who makes his life complicated by doing that whole making him “question his world view” mentioned above. Riseborough is below, while [...]

Last I heard, “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski’s comic book/sci-fi movie “Oblivion” had been re-titled “Horizons”, but perhaps they’ve changed it back. I certainly thought “Oblivion” was a better title anyway. Moving on … Tom Cruise has officially signed on to star in the movie. In the film, Cruise will play “a soldier who’s stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view.” Sounds like “Wall-E”, but with Cruise … and probably no fat people in spaceships.

Joseph Kosinski loves him some sci-fi. After directing “Tron: Legacy”, the director is already attached to a remake of “The Black Hole”, and now has his long-in-development project “Horizons” (formerly known as “Oblivion”) at home over at Universal Studios with none other than Tom Cruise attached to star. The script for the futuristic “Horizons” is from William Monahan and Karl Gadjusek, and would find Cruising playing a soldier assigned to patrol a desolate planet who meets a mysterious traveler. “The Black Hole” was supposed to be Kosinski’s next movie, but now it’s looking as if “Horizons” might jump ahead of it, with the studio looking at a possible October start date.

Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (“The Departed”) has signed on to adapt “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski’s graphic novel “Oblivion” for the big screen. Kosinski is attached to direct. In a post-apocalyptic Earth, civilization lives above the clouds and scavengers illegally collect ancient artifacts from the polluted and destroyed surface below. But when one young scavenger discovers a crashed spacecraft planetside- and a beautiful woman within- he rejoices at the find. Little does he realize that his discovery will lead him to a journey filled with romance, adventure and unimaginable danger. The graphic novel is set to be released by Radical Publishing sometime next year.

We’ve all seen the “Tron Legacy” footage, but to be honest with you, no one really knows how the actual movie will turn out. It could be a visual feast for the eyes, filled with great action scenes and sfx, or it could be, well, “Aeon Flux”. In any case, with “Tron” still in the pipe, director Joseph Kosinski has already announced his next project — a sci-fi action movie called “Oblivion” (a piece of concept art from the film above and to your left). THR describes the movie as such: The story centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves. Kinda sounds a bit like James Cameron’s “Avatar”. In any case, [...]
