One of the suckiest thing about the FOX network is that, unless a show is a bona fide hit, they’ll shut it down faster than you can say, “Stupid FOX, why don’t you at least give it a chance first?” Case in point: New Amsterdam, starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as an immortal cop. Sure, the show was probably too procedural, but overall it was a fresh take on an old, stale formula (the cop show), and deserved a chance. Well in any case, while Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is no longer on New Amsterdam, he has landed at another FOX sci-fi show, this time Virtuality. Oh damn, another FOX show? Crap.
More from seat42f, who breaks the news:
This just in from a source at FOX. They may have canceled New Amsterdam but series star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is staying put at Fox booking the pilot for Virtuality. Coster-Waldau will play Commander Frank Pike. Directed by Friday Night Light’s Peter Berg Virtuality centers around Earth’s first [...]

Bye bye, John Amsterdam? That appears to be the case, or at least, according to TV Guide, which I have the very unfortunately pleasure of saying has never been wrong about show cancellations before, and I doubt if they’re wrong this time. They got the Bionic Woman cancellation right months in advance, and saw the writing on the wall for Jericho — both times! — too. And now, New Amsterdam is gone.
Here’s TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello with the bad news:
Just hours after word leaked that the network had sacked Back to You, sources confirm to me exclusively that New Amsterdam has been euthanized as well.
Well crap. I liked that show. Didn’t love it, but I liked it enough to watch every week. I guess the show’s biggest problem was that, besides flashing back to his past, Amsterdam’s immortality didn’t really have all that much to do with the show. Well, he couldn’t die and everything, and he was searching for [...]

I’m really not sure how much faith you can put in this news of New Amsterdam’s high ratings for its premiere episode from last night. Why do I say that? Because although I liked the show, and will be watching it, the premiere had a major boost from FOX’s American Idol, and let’s face it, you could put a show about an old lady reading a grocery list from her basement on after American Idol and it would still get pretty decent ratings. But hey, why look a gift horse in the mouth? Good news is good news, right?
More:
“Amsterdam,” about an immortal New York City detective, has been pushed around the schedule this season and critic reviews were lukewarm. But last night’s debut was the second highest-rated show of the night after “Idol” (28.2 million viewers, 10.5 preliminary adults 18 to 49 rating and a 26 share) which dipped 5% from last week to hit a Tuesday night season low.
New York Homicide Detective John Amsterdam can’t die. You see, he’s immortal, given the ability to live forever by a tribe of Native American women in 1642 for an act of kindness. Now, Amsterdam works the murder cases of present-day New York City while waiting for his true love to enter his life, for only the woman who would become his soulmate can make Amsterdam mortal again. Such is the premise of the new FOX show New Amsterdam.
Dutch newcomer Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars as John Amsterdam, the cop with a death wish, mainly because centuries of living has taught him not to be afraid of death, although he does try to avoid getting shot whenever he can, cause that apparently still hurts. As the pilot opens, Amsterdam is chasing a murder suspect, when something odd happens — he has a heart attack and dies. Well, sort of. The reason is Dr. Sara Dillane (Alexie Gilmore), who just happens to be in [...]
