It hasn’t finally entered production or anything yet, but if this press release is to be believed, a Vincenzo Natali-directed “Neuromancer”, based on the William Gibson novel of the same name, is (possibly) on its way to hacking into your local mall cineplexes. Seven Arts Pictures and GFM Films announced today that “Neuromancer,” written and directed by Vincenzo Natali and adapted from the William Gibson best-selling novel, has secured sales from distributors in the first three days of Cannes. Territories licensed include: South Korea and Thailand, Taiwan, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and India, CIS, Poland, and the Middle East. “Response to this cult cyberspace thriller has been tremendous and the film ticks a lot of boxes with distributors. The film will be a Canadian-European co-production with principal photography occurring in Canada, Istanbul, Tokyo, and London. Work on the visual effects has already begun, with an anticipated start date in the first quarter of 2012,” said Kate Hoffman, Chief Operating Officer [...]

Vincenzo Natali, director of the overhyped “Splice” and “Cube” has been officially hired to direct one of the greatest and potentially most visual Science Fiction novels in our beloved genre, “Neuromancer”. William Gibson kicks all sorts of ass. Previously, movies based on his short stories or books have left a lot to be desired (“Johnny Mnemonic”). William Gibson is probably my favorite writer so I’m ridiculously excited to hear that someone is giving “Neuromancer” a decent shot. “Neuromancer” is about a dude named Case that gets his brain fried for hacking the wrong fella. Case is offered repair in exchange for doing another job. “Neuromancer” is not your average Science Fiction novel. It’s going to take some serious skills to make the Matrix come alive. Vincenzo gave “Splice” a decent try that ended up a bit cheesy. He has passion for this project though and the blessing of the Gibson so I’m going to be optimistic. “Neuromancer” is home to [...]

Vincenzo Natali (below) and slick sci-fi go together like peanut butter and jelly. Check out his “Cube” or “Cypher” if you haven’t. With his “Splice” in the can and awaiting a June debut from Warner Bros., Natali has found his next sci-fi project, and it might just be his biggest yet: a live-action adaptation of William Gibson’s seminal cyberpunk work “Neuromancer”. “Neuromancer” the movie has been around for a long time now, with various directors, writers, and actors attached at one point or another. The latest name attached to direct was Joseph Kahn, a former music video director who did the motorcycle movie “Torque” a few years ago. “Star Wars” prequel guy Hayden Christensen was also attached to star, and it’s unclear if he’s still onboard. THR reports that Natali will rewrite the script, based on the 1984 novel by William Gibson, about a washed-up computer hacker who is hired by a mysterious employer to work on the ultimate hack.

William Gibson is a Sci-Fi stud. He’s great. There, I got that off my chest. He has had some terrible luck with movie adaptations of his work. Johnny Mnemonic was troublesome to say the least. He has had his great novel “Neuromancer” in development since the dawn of time and so far, people have been chickening out of making it. Now however, we seem to have a cast. Liv Tyler is the latest to join Hayden Christiansen in the Joseph Kahn directed story of an Artificial Intelligence that yearns to be free and of the cyber jockey that is paid to free it. Can’t say much for the cast. This story deserves better. Can you reboot a movie before the original is released? Thanks QuietEarth for the news.

Although I pretty much like every cyberpunk movie I’ve seen (heck, I even liked “Johnny Mnemonic”, and no one likes “Johnny Mnemonic”), I’ve never been too into reading the cyberpunk books from which they were based. The latest adaptation is William Gibson’s “Neuromancer”, and today Joblo has news that Hayden Christensen, late of the “Star Wars” prequels, will be starring in the film as its lead, a hacker name Case. So what’s “Neuromancer” about? Case was the hottest computer cowboy cruising the information superhighway–jacking his consciousness into cyberspace, soaring through tactile lattices of data and logic, rustling encoded secrets for anyone with the money to buy his skills. Then he double-crossed the wrong people, who caught up with him in a big way–and burned the talent out of his brain, micron by micron. Banished from cyberspace, trapped in the meat of his physical body, Case courted death in the high-tech underworld. Until a shadowy conspiracy offered him a second chance–and [...]
