Duncan Jones is working to fund his followup to the excellent “Moon” and is apparently having some difficulties. The film is called “Mute” and was c0-written with Duncan by Mike Johnson, the writer of the upcoming Sherlock Holmes. Mr. Jones plans some juicy ode to Blade Runner vibrations in “Mute”, a story about a mute bartender in future Berlin! that goes in search of his missing girlfriend.
Duncan is philosophic about the whole money thing. He believes that anything worth having requires a difficult process and he’s bang on with that. The Age has a nice interview up with Duncan where he talks about the difficulties in getting an intelligent Sci-Fi movie made. Duncan wants to spend about 5 times the money on “Mute” that he spent on “Moon”. Also in the interview but not elaborated on was Jones’ “eye on” William Gibson’s Neuromancer, a book near and dear to all a true sci-fi believers heart. Thanks io9 for the heads [...]

I just had the considerable pleasure of watching “Moon” starring the ridiculously good Sam Rockwell and the amazing up and coming director Duncan Jones. I notice that “Moon” was produced in part by Trudie Styler who also produced Guy Ritchie’s first film. She has an eye for talent does this girl. Trudie is also the wife of Sting for those not in the know.
“Moon” is a glorious return to old school, model based science fiction. I say model based because instead of C.G.I. that you know is fake, “Moon” uses models and sets that you know are fake but in a different and more interesting version of fake. It’s fake but has that old world craftsmen feel to it. When rovers go bouncing across the lunar surface like they do frequently in “Moon”, you’re thinking, man that’s some good carpentry or excellent plastic whittling. I really respected the time it took to do it. Now, Duncan Jones probably would have [...]

“Moon”, the story of a lonely guy on a long stay on our favorite orbiting body, is finally making it’s way to more theatres around North America. Duncan Jones is ready for his next directorial triumph and as we have reported, his next project will be the film “Mute”. We now have some story details on what may be a Sci-Fi film with some tasty Blade Runner in it. Duncan spoke to Empire about the project.
“There’s a connection with Blade Runner, but I’ve got some ideas that’ll give it its own signature character. It’s set in a future Berlin which may look like a German version of Blade Runner’s Los Angeles, but with a European sensibility.”
Mute will tell the story of a bartender that gets kidnapped while looking for his missing girlfriend. Saying that your next film will have a Blade Runner thing going for it is popular these days. Robert Rodriquez is currently hyping the Blade Runner flavour for [...]

Another clip from Duncan Jones’ sci-fi movie “Moon”, starring Sam Rockwell, Benedict Wong, Malcolm Stewart, Dominique McElligott and Kevin Spacey. The clip is titled “Two Weeks to Go”, and things are getting a tad testy between astronaut Sam and his creepy computer.
Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet’s power problems.
“Moon” opens June 12.

“Moon” explores one of the possible reasons that mankind might colonize the moon in the not-too-distant future. In the film, nuclear fusion has become a reality, providing limitless cheap and clean energy to the entire world. And the most readily available source of Helium-3, the fuel needed for the fusion reaction, is on the surface of the moon.
Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell, “Choke”, “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”) is the lonely astronaut assigned to live alone on the moon and oversee the automated mining operation. Sam is nearing the end of a three-year contract, which means that for three years he’s been in total solitude, his only companion an artificially intelligent computer named Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey), who nimbly maneuvers its robot arms around the base, and has a tiny screen where it displays a myriad of emoticons.

Duncan Jones, the director of the much anticipated old school Sci-Fi drama “The Moon”, talks with io9 about his hopes for his next job in the big chair.
Duncan has expressed his desire to make a movie in the spirit and feel of Blade Runner. As Mr. Jones describes so well in his comments, the Blade Runner world of future Los Angeles feels like a real place. Visually, the density of the scenes, even the ones without people give Blade Runner an almost documentary feel. Watching BR, It feels as if the actors went about being filmed by cameras and by equipment hidden from the comings and goings of an actual, living breathing environment. If you look past Harrison and the rest of the cast there are a thousand other stories to see and to be told. The sound design and music also contributes greatly to the density and realism and should not be overlooked.
Duncan can explain this in his own [...]

Four clips from Duncan Jones’ “Moon” have arrived to alleviate your boring, 3-year stint on the moon. What, you’re not doing a 3-year stint on the moon like the hero of “Moon”? Lucky you, because it doesn’t sound like good things are in store for our hero, and you can catch it in theaters June 12. If there’s one thing you instantly get from these clips is that this is one moody picture. That, and man, Kevin Spacey’s voice is really creepy.
Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet’s power problems.
Starring Matt Berry, Robin Chalk, Dominique McElligott, Sam Rockwell, Kaya Scodelario, Kevin Spacey, Malcolm Stewart, and Benedict Wong. Written and directed by Duncan Jones.

Duncan Jone’s “The Moon”, starring Sam Rockwell, will be opening June 12th. In “The Moon”, a miner, living by himself with only computer and robotic companions begins to see some very strange things soon before he is scheduled to return home to Earth. It looks fantastic.
Apparently though it will show in only two cities, New York and Los Angeles. This sucks. From what I can gather, no other cities are planned to show the film. This is an even deeper level of suck.
I’m going to write an email to Sony Picture Classics. I am going to whine. I suggest you do the same. Thanks io9.

Duncan Jones, the director of the highly anticipated, eagerly awaited and even impatiently envisioned “The Moon”, starring the excellent Mr. Sam Rockwell, has spoken the words “Blade Runner”. As I am highly attuned to the phrase, my data mining implant has brought you this Popular Mechanics interview in which he waxes nostalgic on the beloved epic Sci-Fi classic.
It looks like I’m going to be doing another science-fiction film next. I love Blade Runner, it’s one of my favorite films, and I’ve always been really… depressed that there was never — not a sequel, because I don’t think it’s right to make a sequel about Blade Runner, but no one’s really tried to make a film which was set in the same kind of world or had that same kind of field. So that’s what I’m doing, a big-city mystery story that takes place in a future Berlin.
A future Berlin. I like it. Berlin is prime real estate for Sci-Fi re-imagining. [...]

It is the near future. Astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon, completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine Earth’s primary source of energy, Helium-3. It is a lonely job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all Sam can send and receive.
Thankfully, his time on the moon is nearly over, and Sam will be reunited with his wife, Tess, and their three-year-old daughter, Eve, in only a few short weeks. [...]

“Moon” stars Sam Rockwell as the astronaught and Kevin Spacey as the voice of the base’s computer, which may or may not be trying to kill Sam. You know, self-aware machines are so dependable until they start plotting against you.
Also starring Kaya Scodelario, Matt Berry, Dominique McElligott, Malcolm Stewart, Benedict Wong, and Robin Chalk. The film is scheduled for September 3.

Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is nearing the end of his contract with Lunar. He’s been a faithful employee for 3 long years. His home has been Selene, a moon base where he has spent his days alone, mining Helium 3. The precious gas holds the key to reversing the Earth’s energy crisis.
Isolated, determined and steadfast, Sam has followed the rulebook obediently and his time on the moon has been enlightening, but uneventful. The solitude has given him time to reflect on the mistakes of his past and work on his raging temper. He does his job [...]

SXSW, one of the great festivals of movies and music is underway now in Austin, Texas. “The Moon”, starring Sam Rockwell and directed by Duncan Jones is getting some festival love and reviews are starting to come out.
Our peers at Twitch have a review up that, if you love FI, is a must read in preparation for your inevitable trip to see this movie. A short quote.
The following statement is true but it might be hard to believe. There is a serious science fiction movie headed for theaters in 2009 that does not feature guns, monsters, zombies or CG enhanced, slow-motion martial arts fight scenes.
Let us rejoice. Let’s hope we get more of this kind of stuff. Not that I have anything against zombies or light-sabers or zombies with light-sabers. It’s just nice to have some variety.

“The Moon”, a film starring Sam Rockwell and recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, has received a June 12th release date, smack dab in the heart of the big summer blockbusters. A vote of considerable confidence.
This movie will be a winner. Watching the previews from this one reminds me very much of the great classic Sci-Fi Silent Running. Thanks to Collider for the news on this.

The Sundance Film Festival is always a fantastic showcase for new and especially indy (intelligent) science fiction films. This year, Sundance showed off what will surely be a classic in The Moon, starring the talented Mr. Sam Rockwell and directed by David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones.
Along with The Moon, Sundance film revelers were presented with Cold Souls, a thinker starring Paul Giamatti about a depressed guy who puts his soul into storage using technological means until he feels better. Never a good idea.
Read the quirky neuron stretching plot details at the official Sundance site.

Science fiction movies about isolated individuals who begin to experience things that may or may not actually be happening is nothing new, but no other genre does it better than sci-fi, which has the added benefit of the vastness of space as its background. Add some paranoia, a lot of grungy technology, and isolate the character within an inch of his life, and you have yourself the makings of a great psychological thriller. That seems to be what writer/director Duncan Jones is going for with his movie “Moon”, which stars Sam Rockwell as a lunar miner who begins to suspect that the company he’s working for may be trying to kill him. Or at least, keep him from leaving the moon. Is it real? Is it all in his head, the product of prolonged isolation on the moon?
The plot:
Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is nearing the end of his contract with Lunar. He’s been a faithful employee for 3 long [...]
