While doing the PR rounds to promote his remake of George Romero’s “The Crazies” (in theaters now, by the way) director Breck Eisner also updated fans about his upcoming “Flash Gordon” remake (via Movieline), which he says is still in the scripting stages, and Sony has not yet committed. Flash Gordon is a project I’ve been pursuing for years, it’s a real passion of mine. The writers have been breaking story the past couple of months, and we have a couple months to go until the draft goes into Sony. Assuming they achieve everything we talked about, I think it will be a really great script. It’s not a remake of any movie that’s been done before. Nothing to do with the camp of the ’80s, nothing to do with the serials of the ’50s. It’s definitely based on the Alex Raymond strips from the ’30s and ’40s, told from the point of view as if he was redoing the [...]

Sam Worthington will not be running around Space, ray gunning it for Ming The Merciless in a possible, hopefully completely rebooted “Flash Gordon”. This is from Sam himself so that’s a pretty good source. He was chatting with Aintitcool and set the record straight. happy new year mate there is no validity to the rumours sometimes, as you know, studios tend to just scat ideas and they leak out – but its the first i have heard about it mate. sam Sam, I think, wants in on that whole Captain America thing going down this summer. A super hero movie set during WW2 could be pretty nifty. We will see if Sam fits the bill. Thanks Aintitcool for the scoop.

Sam Worthington in talks for the “Flash Gordon” movie? Okay, probably not, but one of the gazillion gossip sites out there says they heard things, and since that’s apparently good enough for them, it’s good enough for us. Just remember that if it turns out to be complete and utter bullshit, it’s not our fault. But if it does end up being true, keep in mind that we were on top of it! In any case, according to Hollyscoop, here’s the word on the street — and of course by “street” I mean the coffee shops of L.A.: Sources say Sam is up against the sexy Ryan Reynolds for the leading role in the sci-fi flick. “If he gets the role it would be quite a big deal as Flash is an all-American hero,” dished one Hollywood insider. “Right now it’s between Sam, Ryan Reynolds and one or two others for the lead role should the project actually get off [...]

Good news for those of you who still have a passion for all things Flash Gordon after the lackluster TV show by the Sci Fi Channel — Sony has hired two writers, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, to take a crack at the script. No stranger to fiction, the writing duo of Sazama and Sharpless are already in the process of writing vampire flick “Dracula Year Zero” for Universal and are also penning “300″ director Zack Snyder’s “Cobalt 60.” So yeah, these guys seem to know what they’re doing. Via THR: “Flash Gordon” centers on the titular young polo player who is kidnapped and taken to the distant planet Mongo, where he and companions Dale Arden and Hans Zarkov embark on a series of adventures fighting a ruler named Ming the Merciless. Sony’s “Flash,” a live-action film, follows in a 75-year tradition across many media for what began life as Alex Raymond’s comic strip; the property was a movie serial [...]

Apparently the failure of Sci Fi Channel’s recent television version of Flash Gordon hasn’t dulled Columbia Pictures’ enthusiasm for a big-screen movie version, because they’re currently in early negotiations to nab the character’s movie rights. If they do get their way — and really, why wouldn’t they? — Columbia plans on delivering the movie to Breck Eisner (“Sahara”) to direct, with Neal Moritz producing. The Hollywood Reporter has more about the character: “Flash” was originally a science fiction newspaper comic strip drawn by Alex Raymond in the 1930s and was created to compete with another sci-fi strip, “Buck Rogers.” The strip was first adapted to the screen via Buster Crabbe serials and made into a lavish 1980 film starring Sam Jones but remembered more for its Queen score. More recently, it was a Sci Fi Channel miniseries that was seen a critical and ratings failure. Storywise, Flash was a sports player who travels to the planet Mongo with his lady [...]
