Gavin Hood’s “Ender’s Game” movie has enlisted the aid of Ben Kingsley (“Ghandi”) and Brandon Soo Hoo (he played young Storm Shadow in “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra”) into its cast. Kingsley will play Mazer Rackham, “a legendary war hero”, while Soo Hoo will play the awesomely named Fly Molo. The twesome joins Asa Butterfield as the titular hero, in a cast that also includes Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, and Hailee Steinfeld. Hood is adapting from the legendary sci-fi novel by Orson Scott Card for Summit Entertainment. Production is expected to commence next month in New Orleans for a March 15, 2013 release date.

You can officially add Harrison Ford (“Cowboys and Aliens”, the “Star Wars” movies), Abigail Breslin (of “Zombieland” fame), and Hailee Steinfeld (of “True Grit” fame) to the cast of Gavin Hood’s big-budget live-action adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s “Ender’s Game”. Steinfeld and Ford were previously reported as joining the film, but Breslin’s (below) casting is new. Set in a future in which Earth has weathered invasions by an insect-like race of aliens called Formics, the story follows a young genius named Ender Wiggin (Hugo‘s Asa Butterfield) who is conscripted into military school to learn how to battle back the invading horde. Ford will play Col. Hyram Graff, who runs the Battle School in which Ender is enrolled, while Breslin has signed on to play the title hero’s sister Valentine. Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) will play Petra Arkanian, Ender’s friend and one of the only female recruits at Battle School. Summit Entertainment has the film scheduled for a March 15, 2013 [...]

You know, it’s still absolutely amazing to me that an “Ender’s Game” movie is actually happening. I mean, “Ender’s Game”! Anyways. News from the galactic warfare front has Asa Butterfield being confirmed as Ender Wiggin, and some well-known veteran actors being eyed for another major role in the film: that of Colonel Hyrum Graff, the Commander of Training for the International Fleet, an elite boys’ military academy where Ender ends up and where the legend begins. Viggo Mortensen was previously eyed for the role, but apparently talks with him broke down, and now Variety says Ford is in the thick of the new, well, recruits. Gavin Hood (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) is directing the sci-fi actioner, which Summit Entertainment has scheduled for March 15, 2013. A tad optimistic, given all the starts and sudden ends the film has endured throughout its labored development over the years.

Word is that Butterfield (you gotta love British last names) has been offered the role if he wants it, and I suspect he’ll want it. Gavin Hood, who last directed “Wolverine” for Fox, will direct the movie for Summit Entertainment, based on the legendary sci-fi novel by Orson Scott Card.
Now if only Summit Entertainment will actually make it. Sorry if I’m a little pessimistic. After all, people have been telling me that an “Ender’s Game” movie is on the way for the last two decades or so, and it hasn’t happened yet. But those films never had an official release date (right?), which is something Summit Entertainment has now given the Gavin Hood-directed movie. Mark your calenders, kids — if all goes well, Ender will be zapping bad guys on March 15, 2013. Based on the award-winning, landmark best-seller by Orson Scott Card, on a futuristic earth, only the best and brightest children are recruited by a government desperate to fight back after an alien attack. When young Ender Wiggin emerges as a genius strategist, he suddenly becomes humanity’s last and best hope to destroy the alien Formic race. There is a director in Hood attached, but no cast. I’ll believe this thing is actually happening when Hood assembles [...]

Earlier this year, we reported that director Gavin Hood was shopping around an “Ender’s Game” movie based on the Orson Scott Card novel and looking for a studio to call home. Now it appears he’s found that home — over at Summit Entertainment, the same house that gave birth to the “Twilight” franchise. Summit Entertainment has officially snapped up the property’s U.S. film rights, with Hood, who last directed “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” still attached to write and direct the big-budget sci-fi film. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who were shopping the project with Hood, will produce. Production is expected to begin sometime early next year, which also means it’s time to brush the dust off my old copy of the book.

Oh, Ender, will you ever make it to the big screen? Hopefully one day — and perhaps sooner than expected. Heat Vision reports that the Orson Scott Card novel is currently being shopped around to the major studios this week, with a script by Gavin Hood (“Wolverine”), who is also attached to direct. Here’s the plot of the novel (and film, we presume) for those who have never read it: The 1985 novel is set in a future where the Earth is under attack by an insect-like race and mankind has created a battle school to train fighting forces. In this environment enters Ender Wiggin, a kid who is tormented by bullies and an older brother but proves to be a master at a three-dimensional, zero-gravity laser tag-like game. That sets him on a path as a possible savior of the human race. Helping the project along is that the currently very hot duo of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci [...]

The last we heard about an “Ender’s Game” movie (waaaaaaaaaaaay back in 2008), director Wolfgang Petersen had left the project. Now the most current word comes from the LATimes has Odd Lot Entertainment continuing to move on turning the book into a movie and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” director Gavin Hood “developing the project as a director” after doing a once-over on the script. There have been numerous attempts to get a film project of “Ender’s Game” going over the years; at one point, Wolfgang Petersen was said to be mulling it as a director. In this “Call of Duty,” war-in-the-Middle-East age, there’s a timeliness to a story of simulated battle and young people in far-flung death struggles. But studios have found it tricky to take on the story, which, with its large-scale battles, they deemed as requiring a significant budget and a sophisticated visual aesthetic. At the same time, Card himself has insisted that a movie not go effects-heavy; he [...]

Ah, Orson Scott Card’s “Ender’s Game”. What sci-fi geek hasn’t read the novel while growing up? I know I did, and I barely knew how to read when I picked up a copy of the novel. As a result of having read the novel as a kid, I’m not sure how I feel about making a movie out of it. Could it work? Should they even try? Well they’re trying, and have been, but no one in Hollywood has managed to get the movie actually made, which may be a good or a bad thing depending on your point of view. And now, the latest news is that attached director Wolfgang Peterson has “moved on” from the project. The boys at io9 has more: You can forget your dreams of a Das Boot/Enemy Mine-style version of Orson Scott Card’s classic novel Ender’s Game. Director Wolfgang Petersen, previously attached to the project, has moved on, producers tell io9. Chartoff Productions is [...]
