Peter Berg, long expected to be the director of the reboot of perhaps the greatest Sci-Fi novel of all time “Dune”, has dropped the project.
Paramount is now shopping around for a director and the rumours are Neill Blompkamp (District 9) and Neil Marshall (The Descent and the upcoming Centurion) are in the running. Both of these guys are better choices in my opinion than Peter Berg. They just seem to have the correct style and vision for epic Sci-Fi work. Paramount wants the movie not to suck and either way, come in under 175 million. I think we can work with that figure. Neil Marshall apparently has been sent the script. Can Dune even work as a 2 hour-ish movie? I’m doubtful. Thanks Aintitcool.

In a recent interview with SciFiWire, Peter Berg talks about what he sees ahead for his production and direction of the remake of Frank Herbert’s “Dune”, first brought to the screen in the mostly stinky David Lynch directed version in 1984.
If you are a Sci-Fi fan and haven’t read Dune, finish reading every article here on SciFiCool as you had planned and then get your sorry ass self down to a bookstore and get it. Dune was written a while ago it’s true but works just fine now I promise. There’s a lot to the story of Dune. I’ll summarize.
Bad guy named Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (coolest name ever). Sand Worms as big as aircraft carriers. Human computers. Desert planet. Scary desert warriors. The Messiah!. Spooky witches. Sand Worms poop a drug that makes you tougher and live a long time.
There’s a lot more to it but that’s the basics. Oh, plus really good writing.
An excerpt from the Berg interview:

Peter Berg, who just had a massive hit with “Hancock” starring Will Smith, is directing yet another version of Frank Herbert’s massive tome “Dune”. So of course when The Hollywood Reporter got a hold of Berg, they talked about his past projects, his current projects, and what he has in the fire for the future. One of those is “Dune”, in which the THR reporter tries to push Berg for a theme. Berg kind of answered, but not really.
The “Dune” parts from the interview, which you can read in its entirety here:
THR: “Dune” is in some ways an ideological work, at least for the people who read the novel as a metaphor for relying too much on Middle Eastern oil. How much do you want your version to pick up on those themes?
Berg: There is a sense in the book that the commodity is driving the train. But I don’t want to hang the story on that. I read [...]

It looks like Peter Berg’s version of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” may be getting its writer — or at least according to The Hollywood Reporter, who says that Josh Zetumer is currently in negotiations for the job. Herbert’s sprawling book was made once into a movie, in 1984 by David Lynch, which I actually kind of liked; it was followed up with a 2000 mini-series on the Sci Fi Channel that I also liked. The mini-series proved successful enough to spawn a sequel, “Children of Dune”.
THR has more:
The “Dune” property, one of the best-selling science fiction series of all time, has spawned an enormous and devoted fan base and could provide a lucrative new franchise for Paramount. The studio is running hot off its blockbuster launch of “Iron Man” and its resurrection of the “Indiana Jones” juggernaut.
No one involved would comment on Zetumer’s take on the “Dune” saga. The writer, repped by UTA and Management 360, also has “Villain” at 2929 [...]

I’m always amused when Internet movie sites get a movie news before the trades like Variety or The Hollywood Reporter, because, well, we always depend on THEM for the news, not the other way around. Such as this news about the upcoming “Dune” remake. We reported here, and others reported it over three months ago (from last year!) that Berg would be remaking the movie, and Variety has just now gotten around to confirming it.
More:
The project is out to writers, with the producers looking for a faithful adaptation of the Hugo- and Nebula Award-winning book. The filmmakers consider its theme of finite ecological resources particularly timely.
New Amsterdam’s Richard Rubenstein, who produced Sci Fi’s “Dune” and sequel “Children of Dune,” is also producing alongside Sarah Aubrey of Film 44, Berg’s production banner. John Harrison and Mike Messina exec produce.
Paramount envisions the project as a tentpole film.
So yes, it’s happening. “Dune” is being remade by Peter Berg, which isn’t such a bad [...]

About two months ago, an intriguing rumor surfaced: Paramount is seeking the rights to Frank Herbert’s Dune in order to set up Peter Berg (”The Kingdom”) as a potential franchise director. Well forget rumor — it’s fact. Berg says about the project to MTV that he directing the new Dune franchise is a “done deal”, and that they would be in production now if not for the writer’s strike.
More:
Berg says that while there’s no script yet, they have a list of writers they plan to go out to once the strike settles. The helmer called himself “a huge fan of the book” and when asked about the scale of the film, he simply replied, “big big big.”
As any fan of the Frank Herbert classic knows, “Dune” received the big screen treatment once before in a divisive David Lynch film. Berg said that while he’s “a big fan of Lynch,” he believes “that interpretation has left the door wide open for [...]
