That remake/rebirth/re-whatever of Frank Herbert’s “Dune”? Paramount has essentially given up on making the film, and has given up the rights to it, according to Deadline.

Paramount Gives Up on the Remake/Rebirth/Re-Imagining/Re-Whatever of Dune
Updates on Afterburn, EDF, and Dune
A couple of sci-fi movie news today: the first has Gerard Butler and director Antoine Fuqua circling the Tobey Maguire-produced “Afterburn”, based on the Red 5 Comics comic book released a few years ago. Set in a post-apocalyptic world that has been scorched by massive solar flares, the movie follows a group of treasure hunters sent to retrieve items inside the mutated zones. Fuqua, who previously directed “Training Day”, is looking to direct. Tobey Maguire will still produce.
Dune Gets A Script Writer Fixer
Frank Herbert’s Sci-Fi epic of epics “Dune” is getting a movie redo from the kinda cheesy David Lynch effort from back in the big hair days of 1984. Josh Zetumer has written the new script with Pierre Morel from “From Paris With Love” and “Taken” fame directing. It seems that Pierre is looking to tidy up the existing script and has brought his “Taken” script writer Chase Palmer (his real name) into the fray to inject a little more of Pierre’s sandy vision into “Dune”.
French Director Pierre Morel Gets Taken with Dune
For the longest time, Peter Berg had his eye set on adapting Frank Herbert’s “Dune” for Paramount, but with Berg gearing up the alien-based “Battleship” movie and the Navy SEALs true story “Lone Survivor”, the studio has been looking for a replacement, and it seems like they’ve found their man in Pierre Morel. For those who aren’t familiar with the name, Morel was the director of last year’s breakthrough sleeper hit “Taken” with Liam Neeson, and he’s got the John Travolta action movie “From Paris with Love” due out early this year.
Director Peter Berg On His Larger Vision Of Dune
In a recent interview with SciFiWire, Peter Berg talks about what he sees ahead for his production and direction of the remake of Frank Herbert’s “Dune”, first brought to the screen in the mostly stinky David Lynch directed version in 1984.
Peter Berg Briefly Talks Dune Remake
Peter Berg, who just had a massive hit with “Hancock” starring Will Smith, is directing yet another version of Frank Herbert’s massive tome “Dune”. So of course when The Hollywood Reporter got a hold of Berg, they talked about his past projects, his current projects, and what he has in the fire for the future. One of those is “Dune”, in which the THR reporter tries to push Berg for a theme. Berg kind of answered, but not really.
Dune Remake May Have a Writer
It looks like Peter Berg’s version of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” may be getting its writer — or at least according to The Hollywood Reporter, who says that Josh Zetumer is currently in negotiations for the job. Herbert’s sprawling book was made once into a movie, in 1984 by David Lynch, which I actually kind of liked; it was followed up with a 2000 mini-series on the Sci Fi Channel that I also liked. The mini-series proved successful enough to spawn a sequel, “Children of Dune”.
Variety Confirms Berg to Direct Dune Remake
I’m always amused when Internet movie sites get a movie news before the trades like Variety or The Hollywood Reporter, because, well, we always depend on THEM for the news, not the other way around. Such as this news about the upcoming “Dune” remake. We reported here, and others reported it over three months ago (from last year!) that Berg would be remaking the movie, and Variety has just now gotten around to confirming it.
Peter Berg Confirms Dune Remake Rumors
About two months ago, an intriguing rumor surfaced: Paramount is seeking the rights to Frank Herbert’s Dune in order to set up Peter Berg (“The Kingdom”) as a potential franchise director. Well forget rumor — it’s fact. Berg says about the project to MTV that he directing the new Dune franchise is a “done deal”, and that they would be in production now if not for the writer’s strike.
