It’s an awkward time to be a Doctor Who fan in 2009. David Tennant’s departure as the beloved 10th Doctor is bearing down on us like an eighteen wheeler with burned out brakes and a driver smashed on Wild Turkey. Matt Smith’s turn as the 11th Doctor is waiting in the delivery room, ready to hatch. With all this going on, it seems that series minder Russell T. Davies wasn’t paying much attention to the 2nd of only 5 “Doctor Who” episodes this year; as a result the milestone 200th episode is more of a by the numbers effort unworthy of the series’ achievement.
“Planet of the Dead” initially introduces us to Lady Christina, a antiquities thief from the Lara Croft school of raiding. A sexy and confident aristocrat, she’s taken to staging daring heists more for the adrenaline rush than for the needed income. After brazenly stealing a centuries old golden cup, she jumps on a London bus to escape [...]

Soon we will have a new Doctor traveling about and saving us from god knows what evil alien machinations. David Tennant is about to check out as number 10 and actor Matt Smith will appear next year as the eleventh good Doctor. The BBC has some cameras distantly filming the action in seaside Cardiff where the Doctor and his new assistant Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillian, have been seen outside of the TARDIS, striding on the rocky shore. The new season will not begin until next year and the old Doctor hasn’t even shuffled off yet (his final episodes will be shown this year) but I like the look of this new guy. Thanks Scifiwire and The Daily Mail for the scoop.

It’s been a crazy few months for fans of “Doctor Who”; first the hyper popular David Tennant gracefully exits only to be replaced in a rapid fashion by relative unknown Matt Smith. Meanwhile, viewers have only 5 new episodes spread over a year before the 10th Doctor gets his regenerative facelift. To make it up to all, the BBC needed an episode that knocks it out of the park. Keeps us guessing, and then holds our attention when the biggest mystery is revealed. A grand slam, a perfect game, a triple play all steroid free and rolled into one. Behold…..”The Next Doctor”???!!!??
The Doctor is flying solo these days, with Donna back with her family after last season’s war with Davros and the Daleks. His TARDIS arrives at Christmastime in Victorian England, but his chance to savor the holiday cheer is short lived. A woman’s voice screams for “the Doctor”–but when he arrives to save the day he’s surprised to learn [...]

I’m not the biggest Doctor Who fan out there, but even I know that when the good doctor travels, it’s always with a comely female companion. Or at least, that’s what Billie Piper has taught me. With a new Doctor taking over the time traveling phone booth, the folks at the BBC have decided to give him a new traveling companion as well. Her name is Karen Gillian, a 21-year old Scottish actress who will be accompanying the 26-year old Matt Smith around on his journeys.
Says the BBC who announced the casting on Friday:
Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales Piers Wenger said, ‘We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special.’
Karen Gillan follows in the footsteps of former companions including Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman and Catherine Tate who all [...]

You may or may not have heard, but there is a new Doctor Who in town. Actor Matt Smith will be playing yet another version of the Time Lord, and one of his nemesis on the BBC show may be … Gillian Anderson? That’s according to the British The Telegraph newspaper, who says that the Doctor Who people are very keen to bring the former X-Files star onboard in a one-time appearance as The Rani, a renegade Time Lord. Er, Time Lady, I guess is the proper title.
Via The Telegraph:
An insider told the Daily Express newspaper: “Gillian obviously has a massive sci-fi following and it’s felt that it would be a major coup to have her appear in Doctor Who.
“The team behind the show are keen for the next Doctor to have lots of new enemies and Gillian would be a glamorous and impressive addition to the list.
“The Rani would be a perfect role for her as the character used [...]

This isn’t big news in the States, but it’s pretty big news Across the Pond over in the UK, where they’ve just announced the actor who will be replacing David Tennant as the new Doctor Who in the ongoing TV show. The eleventh version Doctor, I’m told. The actor’s name is Matt Smith, a 26-year old actor who has been in the BBC1’s The Ruby in the Smoke and BBC2’s Party Animals. Apparently casting a mostly unknown actor is not a stretch for the BBC, as the previous doctor, Tennant, had only been in one show before he, too, was plucked out of obscurity to take over the controls of the TARDIS.
Here’s more about the casting and Smith from the BBC:
Matt Smith has been named as the actor who will take over from David Tennant in Doctor Who – making him the youngest actor to take on the role.
At 26, Smith is three years younger than Peter Davison when he [...]

I’m not the biggest fan of Doctor Who out there, but I have seen an episode here and there, and from what I’ve seen, I’ve liked. The show’s got that strange, British rhythm about it that just screams “this is NOT an American sci-fi show!” It’s kinda nice to see every now and then. But the show has a massive following around the world, and I’m sure this news will hit them hard: David Tennant, the current Doctor Who, will be leaving the show, and making way for a new Doctor. Not really a problem for the show, since the whole Doctor Who character was designed in such a way that replacing current the Doctor with new actors in the same role was always easily achieved, thus Tennant taking over for Christopher Eccleston a few years ago.
Says Tennant about his decision to leave:
His stint in the show had been “the most extraordinary time, it’s been bewildering, life changing, very [...]

A while ago it was announced that Kylie Minogue would be guest-starring in an episode of “Doctor Who” as a Cyberwoman, and just recently, the BBC confirmed that Mingoue would be joining the show — but only for a special Christmas-themed Episode. Now the BBC has release the first image of Minogue on the show (thumbnail to your left, bigger version below), and more details about the Christmas special is revealed: the episode will be called “Voyage of the Damned”, and will take place onboard the doomed Titanic!
More about Kylie’s upcoming appearance via the BBC:
Kylie will be joining David Tennant for the episode, Voyage Of The Damned, which starts filming in July in Cardiff.
The production team has also confirmed that the storyline will follow on directly from the ending of series three where viewers witnessed The Titanic crash through the Tardis walls…
The episode has been written by Doctor Who’s Executive Producer and Head Writer Russell T Davies.

A while ago there was news that Australian pop singer and actress (and let’s not forget, cancer survivor) Kylie Minogue might be showing up in an episode of “Doctor Who” as a Cyberwoman. (A very sexy Cyberwoman, of course.) Now The Hollywood Reporter has finally confirmed the news, saying…
Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue will join the cast of the British sci-fi TV drama “Doctor Who” for a special Christmas episode, the BBC said. Britain’s publicly funded broadcaster said that Minogue, 39, would play a “major lead role” alongside Dr. Who (David Tennant). The hourlong episode, “Voyage of the Damned,” will start filming this month July in Cardiff, Wales.
Lucky you, “Doctor Who” fans!
Too bad it’ll just be for one episode…
