The boys at Market Saw have some great updates on some highly anticipated upcoming films, including two sequels and one original. Up first, James Cameron’s “Avatar 2″, which should make even more money than the first, if that’s even possible.
A source tells MS something very interesting about the film’s plot:
Just in case you’ve been “away”, getting some much needed “rest” and haven’t checked out the must see TEDtalks series of lectures happening now all over the place, let me fill you in on an excellent Sci-Fi TED given by Neill Blomkamp, director and writer of “District 9″ a movie where the aliens arrive and can’t or won’t go home.
Neill Blomkamp made the kind of magic happen that every Hollywood studio dreams of. He made a movie that was really cheap to film look like it cost a ton and he made it tasty enough for it to score big at the box office.
…and it doesn’t sound like it’s going to be a sequel to his breakout hit “District 9″. Variety currently has an article on Blomkamp getting a solid commitment from Media Rights Capital to begin work on his next movie, an untitled sci-fi film. If this was a sequel to “District 9″, they would probably have mentioned that up front, but they didn’t.
This is what happens when a movie comes out of nowhere and scores big, as director Neill Blomkamp’s film “District 9″ has done. The film’s got people interested in sci-fi again (always a good thing), and that excitement has translated into box office success to the tune of a $37 million dollar opening weekend. So can a sequel be far behind?
