One of the more intriguing new shows coming up in 2010 is NBC’s “Day One”, from former “Heroes” producer Jesse Alexander. The show was originally envisioned as a 13-episode first season, but that was eventually shortened to a four-hour mini-series. Now, at the NBC TV Critics Association press tour, the network has confirmed that the show will be shortened yet again to a two-hour movie. Zap2it reports from the shindig as such: The alien-invasion show, which began life as a 13-episode series, then became a four-hour miniseries, will now air as a two-hour movie. The good news is that it will also be a back-door pilot — meaning that if it performs well, NBC could pull the trigger on more episodes. For now, though, the two hours is all NBC has shot. The now-movie focuses on a small group of survivors of an invasion and stars David Lyons (“ER”), Julie Gonzalo (“Eli Stone”), Carly Pope (“Dirt,” “24″), Catherine Dent (“The [...]

NBC’s “Day One” was supposed to be a full series but for reasons unknown, it’s getting the chop down to a 4 hour miniseries. “Day One” is about a group of people trapped, hiding or sticking together in an apartment complex after something invades the hell out of us. So the miniseries gets to be a big teaser. Jesse Alexander (Heroes, Lost) is the man with the plan and he has this to say on his blog. “Launching a new scripted series in prime-time on a broadcast network has never been more challenging. For Day One to have the greatest chance of long term success, a new launch model was needed. Working closely with NBC’s creative team, I came up with something very exciting. We’re taking the thirteen hours of story that was to be drawn out over as many weeks, and making four hours of spectacular entertainment. Showing it over two nights in a row. It’s the miniseries model. [...]

It seems a lot of major decisions have been made in regards to two highly anticipated sci-fi shows. Variety reports that NBC has decided to air Jesse Alexander’s Day One as a 4-hour mini-series event instead of a full-blown 13-episode season, as originally planned. Something similar is happening with the new V TV show on ABC. So what’s the big idea? Apparently this is a cost-cutting measure by NBC, which is really taking a pounding with a lot of its expensive original scripted shows, including the poorly performing Heroes, which continues to dip in the ratings. As a result, instead of a 13-episode first season, Alexander’s Day One will instead premiere as a 4-hour mini-series event after the Winter Olympics (sometime around March 1, 2010), but the show will have to prove to NBC that it deserves a series (i.e. high ratings) for the network to commit. Day One stars Adam Campbell, Catherine Dent, Julie Gonzalo, David Lyons, Derek Mio, [...]

Well this is a kicker: as soon as I posted that Day One article about how NBC isn’t giving out lots of good vibes about standing by Jesse Alexander’s Day One, the boys at AICN went and posted these SPOILERIFIC details about the show and its pilot. Read on only if you want to know SPOILERS. You’ve been warned. … … … … … … … … … … … … … … According to AICN, the villains of the show are, indeed, alien invaders, and this is how they arrive on Earth: Massive meteorite-like projectiles come crashing into the Earth from all around the planet. The projectiles then melt, reform and shoot out of the ground, beanstalk-like, to form bizarre towers twice the length of the tallest man-made skyscraper. A circuit-frying electro-magnetic pulse knocks out all electronics and communications, “War of the Worlds”-style. Other details, which can be found in the Day One extended trailer, reveals that Lynne has [...]

Well this is interesting news. According to this interview with NBC president Angela Bromstad at the Television Critics Association summer press tour(via SciFiWire), it sure sounds like NBC doesn’t have very high hopes that Jesse Alexander’s Day One will last past Season 1. Or does it mean something else? Says Bromstad: “We’ve always looked at Day One as a big event for us and not necessarily a show that would be an ongoing, returning show for a second season. It would depend on its success. Just by nature of the genre, they always then get a little narrow, and whether or not we can sustain it on the air …” It sure sounds like she’s already working on her justification to cancel the show after its first season. Of course, it could also mean that as potentially expensive as Day One is (and if you’ve seen the extended trailer you know it’s not going to be a cheap show to [...]

Day One is a nifty little Sci-Fi show starting this fall that features a group of people fighting to survive in an apartment complex after the aliens come and clean house. Now, a clever little website has sprouted up, getting all Fanboy over a television series that doesn’t exist but points you toward the Day One site on NBC. The site is called SargassoPlanet and is supposedly put together by one Zack Adamsky, who is a character on the Jesse Alexander produced show. I imagine references to what may be coming for those doomed and puny humans in the Liberty Park apartment complex (a picture on the site) abound at Sargasso Planet. There are also some action figure pictures that may shed some future light on the possible baddies. Sargasso is a reference to weeds by the way. A mass of floating vegetation. Floating through space, looking for a ripe and fertile place to conquer?? I am overwrought with the [...]

So, I bet you thought NBC’s new Day One show was just another generic post-apocalyptic TV show ala Jericho and its ilk, huh? Well guess again, because this thing is starting to shape up into something I didn’t really expect. Check out this extended trailer for the show, which reveals a decidedly alien menace behind all the chaos. And not “alien” in the from outer space variety, though that’s certainly a possibility. At this point, it seems like the mystery of who, or what is behind the “global catastrophe” that has all but destroyed the Governments of the world will be kept under wraps for a while. From executive producer/writer Jesse Alexander (Heroes, Lost, Alias) and director Alex Graves (Fringe, Journeyman), Day One tells the story of life on earth following a global catastrophe that has devastated the world’s infrastructures. Beginning with the immediate aftermath of the cataclysmic event, an eclectic band of survivors — played by Adam Campbell (Date [...]

The schedule for the upfronts are: FOX’s begins today, followed by ABC on Tuesday, and CBS on Wednesday. NBC already did theirs earlier this month. THIS LIST WILL BE UPDATED WHEN APPROPRIATE NBC: It was recently confirmed that Chuck will return for a third, albeit shorter season (more info here), while Heroes will also be back for a fourth season. Meanwhile, the fantasy/parallel Earth show Kings is dead in the water, and so is the new Knight Rider despite a lot of tinkering. The net’s supernatural show Medium is also gone from the network, but didn’t stay gone long. It’s now at CBS.
We have it directly from NBC that “Day One”, an excellent sounding post apocalyptic series from Jesse Alexander (Lost, Alias, Heroes) has been picked up for next falls NBC schedule. The official synopsis: In the aftermath of a global event that devastates the world’s infrastructures, a small band of survivors strives to rebuild society and unravel the mysteries of why the event took place and what the future has in store. Told from the point of view of an eclectic group of neighbors in a Van Nuys, California apartment building, this journey of survival will show us that hope is found in the smallest of victories and heroes are born every day. The series stars Adam Campbell (“Date Movie”), Catherine Dent (“The Shield”), Julie Gonzalo (“Eli Stone”), David Lyons (“ER”), Derek Mio (“Greek”), Carly Pope (“24″), Thekla Reuten (“Sleeper Cell”) and Addison Timlin (“Cashmere Mafia”) Has potential I think.
“Day One” is a very interesting sounding Post Apocalyptic story about a group of folks dealing with the end of the world as they know it, all from their California apartment complex. It has been described as a cross between Cloverfield and Lost. NBC picked up the two part pilot for consideration for their fall schedule. Newsarama (via Quiet Earth) has a nice interview with Jesse, where he spills some further beans. Here is a brief taste. JA: Well, first of all, the serialized nature of those shows can be quite challenging. So I’m looking to do something that’s more episodic, but definitely has a serialized condition, in the way that China Beach did it. I don’t remember if anyone remembers China Beach, but it was about a M*A*S*H unit during the Vietnam war. It told of this small group of people in the midst of a larger situation, but it wasn’t serialized, it was more episodic tales within this [...]

Maybe getting kicked off Heroes was the best thing that could ever have happened for TV producer/writer Jesse Alexander, whose post-apocalyptic TV show Day One has just been greenlit for a pilot by NBC, and now he’s added four more to his cast. Leading the way is Carly Pope (pictured, left), recently seen (and killed off!) the current season of 24, plus three others, including David Lyons, the show’s male lead, Adam Campbell and Thekla Reuten. THR has more on their characters: Lyons will play the male lead, a Marine and an Iraq veteran who is a natural leader. Reuten (“Sleeper Cell”), repped by Innovative and ICA, will play an odd woman who keeps copious notes on other tenants. I know, the whole “what happened?” is going to be one of those “big questions” that the show attempts to answer during its run, and I’m sure clues will be dropped left and right, the answers always out of reach, and — you know what, it’s BORING. Can’t I just get a TV show about life in the aftermath of a mysterious, unknown apocalypse?
