While doing interviews for his soon to be released film “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee”, Neo himself updated the future of the film version of Keiko Nobumoto’s Anime tale of bounty hunters of the starship Bebop, traversing the solar system hunting down the bad guys for fame and fortune.
MTV has it on film for you to enjoy. Keanu talks about the scope of the film and why the current draft would just be too expensive to make. Thanks Splashpage for the juice.

So what’s been going on with the live-action versions of “Robotech” and “Cowboy Bebop”? Not a whole lot, as both movies seem to still be in the very early stages of development (i.e. scripts are still being written), but AICN finally has updates for both movies.
On “Robotech”, a new writer has come onboard in Tom Rob Smith, a UK-based writer. He will be contributing to a script that has recently gone through the hands of some notable names, including Lawrence Kasdan and and writing partners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (TV’s Smallville). “Robotech” is being envisioned as as starring vehicle for Tobey Maguire of “Spider-Man” fame. Which reminds me, with Maguire now committed to a fourth movie, it doesn’t look like “Robotech” is going to happen anytime soon, at least if Maguire wants to star as well as produce this thing.
The “Cowboy Bebop” movie, on the other hand, seems to actually be moving forward. Writer Peter Craig has already [...]

If you were one of those people still hoping that Keanu Reeves might leave your beloved “Cowboy Bebop” alone, then tough luck, folks, because the trades have made it official: Fox studios is producing a live-action movie version of “Bebop” to star Keanu Reeves as Spike Spiegel, with Peter Craig currently writing the script. Sunrise president Kenji Uchida, Shinichiro Watanabe, and Keiko Nobumoto will produce the movie for the Japanese side.
THR has more on the plot:
One of the big titles in anime, “Bebop” is set in a time where “astral gates” make interstellar travel possible. Humanity, decimated by a lunar explosion resulting from a gate accident, spread out across the solar system, as did crime, which gave rise to the use of bounty hunters.
Reeves would play Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter and former member of a crime syndicate. Spiegel, along with Jet Black, a fellow bounty hunter and former cop, are the two pilots of the spaceship Bebop.
On the bright [...]

If you were one of those people hoping that that news of Keanu Reeves playing Spike Spiegel in a live-action movie version of “Cowboy Bebop” were just rumors, well sorry to disappoint you, because it’s very much true and Reeves says as much to MTV. So what exactly did Reeves have to say? He certainly shows real enthusiasm for the property, which I suppose is a good thing. Better to have a leading man who can control the production have a real vested interest in getting things right, then just a hired gun, right?
Here are some highlights from Reeves’ interview with MTV:
“It’s got a Western quality, a Western film noir aspect to it,” Reeves said of why he’s such a big fan of Shinichiro Watanabe and Keiko Nobumoto’s groundbreaking series. “It’s got so much style to it, and that’s part of its appeal. That kind of Old West, bordertown, low-tech science fiction aspect.”
The flick is currently being put together by [...]

Big news out of the world of Rumorland today, as Firstshowing.net is reporting a rumor that Keanu Reeves has been attached to play the lead character Spike in the just-revealed “Cowboy Bebop” live-action movie. The site wouldn’t say who their source is, but that he’s close to the production. What’s more, the source also gives the stunner that Reeves has been attached to the project for as long as eight months now. Wow. Didn’t we just hear about this movie last week?
More from FirstShowing:
Yep, you heard that right, the same guy who played Neo will be taking on the role of Spike Spiegel, a former member of the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate who is haunted by the memory of his time in the organization. As we mentioned previously, the show first aired in Japan in early 1998 and was brought over to America in 2001 on Adult Swim. The series follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters traveling [...]

It’s definitely good to be a Japanese anime fan nowadays. With “Robotech”, “Akira”, and “Ghost in the Shell” already gearing up for the big Hollywood treatment (with very notable names behind them, to boot!), fans of “Cowboy Bebop” can expect to see their show turned into a live-action movie sometime very soon. I’ve seen the “Bebop” movie, but not the series, so I don’t really have a firm grasp on the series’ universe. From what I saw, it’s an interesting series, and could make for a good show. Kind of like Joss Whedon’s “Serenity”, actually.
IfMagazine has your “Bebop” movie news:
We caught up with producer-extraordinaire Erwin Stoff at the NBC TCAs where he was promoting his upcoming updated-David-and-Goliath-based show KINGS. When asked about other projects he is currently working on, Stoff, let slip some very juicy news about a very beloved anime franchise.
“I’m developing COWBOY BEBOP for Fox, but doing it as a live-action film, so I’m working on that at [...]
