“If one does what God does enough times, one will become as God is.” – Hannibal Lecktor, Manhunter
Fans, just like any other collective, are a fickle bunch. So passionate were fans of the original Battlestar Galactica that blood might have literally boiled when word spread in 2003 of a “re-imagined” version of the show in the works. Now, admittedly, this was rising out of the ashes just a couple of years after the promise of a continuation series, not to mention, that fans must still be burned over 20 years later by the quick-cash shitfest that was Galactica 1980 (a show so poor that it can neither be used or excused as a comparison). Obviously, many gave the show a chance and soon understood why it was getting the refreshing treatment it did. Flash forward 6 years later and as the critically acclaimed series is laid to rest, a prequel is set to carry the mantle; and just as it [...]

Yowsers. Why did they cancel “Battlestar Galactica” again? I’m not sure, but someone’s got some ’splainin’ to do. Until then, here’s Tricia Helfer and Grace Park reminding you why there were some pretty awesomely good times on the Galactica before it all went to shit. The only thing missing, of course, is Katee Sackhoff. What, they couldn’t convince her to do the threesome spread? For shame, for shame.

More over at Maxim.

There were three significant sci-fi themed panels at Comic-Con on Thursday: Astroboy, Battlestar Galactica, and James Cameron’s Avatar. Alas, despite waiting three hours in line for “Avatar”, I only managed to catch the final 5 minutes or so of the panel, just enough to hear Cameron saying that he plans to show the first 15 minutes of “Avatar” for free in Imax theaters. I was not, unfortunately, in time to catch the 25 minutes of footage that Cameron brought with him. Earlier in the day, I did manage to catch the “Astroboy” and BSG panels. Observations from the two below.

The big news coming out of the “Astroboy” panel was that Samuel L. Jackson and Charlize Theron have roles in the movie. In the case of Jackson, director David Bowers called it a cameo. He didn’t say either/or about Theron’s, though.
Attending the panel were Bowers, producer Maryann Garger, Astroboy himself Freddie Highsmore, and the impossibly lovely Kristen Bell, who I have [...]

Haven’t gotten enough of Ron Moore and Battlestar Galactica yet? You’re in luck. The Sci Fi Channel and Moore are releasing an original Battlestar Galactica movie called “The Plan” later this year that will further explore the mythology of the show from the perspective of those pesky robot Cylons. Remember how in the show it’s always said that the Cylons “have a plan”? Well this is it. Check out a teaser trailer and a clip from the upcoming movie, which is directed by Edward James Olmos (Adama himself), airing this November.

NBC Universal Television recently held an auction for Battlestar Galactica memorabilia, where BSG nerds with disposable cash (or however much they could steal from their parents) got the chance to buy their very own copy of Starbuck’s flight suit or that incredible red number that Cylon Number Six (played by Tricia Helfer) wore for much of the show. According to SciFiWire, a couple of geeks did put their cash where their hormones were, snapping up Starbuck’s flight suit for $16,500, while Number Six’s red number went for a chart-topping $23,000.
Other notable items that went for big bucks included the “Battlestar 75″ seal from the “Weapons Control” section of CIC, which went for $16,000, and “Kara’s Bizarre Painting on Canvas”, which went for $15,000. Adama’s Duty Blue Uniform went for $13,000, while Sharon (aka Boomer’s) flight suit scored $13,000.
Now if only they could buy their very own version of a social life…

Looks like Chief Galen Tyrol is up to his neck in corruption and bad influences, and it ain’t the killer cyborg from outer space kind. Check out the extended, minute and a half preview for Aaron Douglas’ new cop show, The Bridge. You know, I like the fact that Douglas is the star here, and not some pretty boy. Hope the show works out, if just because Tyrol was always my favorite character on BSG, and I didn’t have a whole lot of favorites on that show to begin with.
It is the role of the police to protect society – but who is there to protect them? The police union has become powerless against the politically-motivated police department and street cop Frank Leo (Aaron Douglas) is sick of it. By popular vote Frank becomes president of the 8000 strong police union but makes many powerful enemies in the department along the way.
Inspired by the insights of a former police union [...]

What’s this? A BSG TV show with actual space lasers? Guys and gals not shagging in the hallways or moping around pondering the existential nature of life? Dang, as cheesy as this trailer is, it actually looks sci-fi, not some arthouse bullshit dressed up as sci-fi. Really, Ron Moore? People are flying around in spaceships on your show, and your characters are still wearing eyeglasses and use 20th century phones to communicate? WTF.
In case you’ve never seen it, here’s the 4-minute trailer that original BSG star Richard Hatch hatched together (har har) in 1999 to sell a new BSG series called Second Coming. No one bought it, alas, and we now have Ron Moore’s version instead. You know, the one where everyone is miserable and you want to slit your wrist after every episode?
By the by, I once heard Dirk Benedict, the original Starbuck on radio once doing an interview, and he made a great joke about how Ron [...]

Jamie Bamber and Tricia Helfer may be enemies on Battlestar Galactica, but they’re buddies in real life because both are concerned about saving animals. For Jamie Bamber, it’s saving the black bears of Canada from being hunted, killed and turned into furry hats, and Tricia Helfer wants to save cats. Because, er, apparently people are hunting, killing, and eating cats. I’m not sure about the last part, but I’m pretty sure about the first two. Probably.
Anyhoo, both actors recently did ads for PETA. Helfer’s was last year, and for some reason the former model turned actress who usually shows up wearing as little clothes as possible in her photoshoots decided to keep all of her clothes on for her PETA ad. Bamber was less shy, and shed all (well, all that we could see anyway) for his campaign. Look, Tricia, if you’re going to be stingy about the skin, I don’t know if I want to save your cats. There, [...]

I’m not the biggest fan of the new Battlestar Galactica, but then again, I’m not old enough to be all that big a fan of the original incarnation of the show, either. So basically, yeah, I kinda like the fact that a sci-fi show is getting all this critical acclaim from the mainstream press, but oh boy, I sure wish it had been for something better, like say Babylon 5. But oh well. Caprica, the Battlestar Galactica prequel spin-off, is debuting on the Sci Fi Channel very soon, and here are some images from the show.
Prequel to “Battlestar Galactica” takes place 50 years before the series is set and follows the earlier evolution of the Cylon species. When the colonies were at peace, a breakthrough in robotics and artificial intelligence begets the first Cylon. Told from the perspective of two families, the Graystones and the more familiar Adamas, sci fi drama explores themes of corporate control, politics and the impact [...]

No, not the Sci Fi Channel reboot. Sorry, fans of depressing so-called sci-fi shows. We’re actually talking about the original Battlestar Galactica TV show, which according to IGN is currently moving towards an original theatrical movie over at Universal Pictures under the watchful eye of original creator Glen A. Larson, who will write and produce. Or at least, that’s the rumor.
IGN has more:
IGN Movies has learned that Universal Pictures is planning to turn the TV series Battlestar Galactica into a feature film with series creator Glen A. Larson being lined up to script and produce it.
Universal has denied the rumor, but IGN is sure that they’re right, and points to a casting rumor they reported a full year before the studio finally officially announced it.
So what do you think, BSG fans? You like the idea of the “old” show making it to theaters, or would you rather have the “new” one?
Below: I gotta admit, the new show’s got [...]

Although I’m not a very big fan of Battlestar Galactica, I gotta give the show all the props it can handle, if just for bringing science fiction back to the lips of mainstream audiences. Of course, if you’ve watched the new BSG at all, you probably realized this is less a sci-fi show than a TV version of an arthouse movie, where everything tragic that can possibly happen to human beings do end up happening to these poor saps on the doomed fleet. Anyways, the big question circling the show’s final season is: “Who is the 12th and final human Cylon that has yet to be revealed on the show”?
Well, the blokes over at SyFyPortal seems to know who it is. Or to be exact, someone has told them who the final Cylon is, although they haven’t been able to confirm it, so it’s caveat emptor time. But instead of coming right out and telling us, they’ve included the reveal [...]

I’m really not sure what the biker get-ups are about, but wow, Ron Moore sure knew how to cast them, huh?

The Sci Fi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica prequel series Caprica keeps on rolling, with more casting news. The latest addition to the show is Polly Walker, who has joined the show’s two-hour premiere as Sister Clarice Willow, whose character is described as “the gracious, eloquent and duplicitous high priestess and headmistress of the Athena Academy, a private religious school.” Yup, sounds like Ron Moore, alright.
Speaking of BSG, Starbuck herself, Katee Sackhoff, will be broadening her horizons with a multi-arc stint on the FX show Nip/Tuck. She’ll play a doctor named Theodora “Teddy” Lowe on the show, and will appear in four episodes.
Over at the Sci Fi Channel’s other new series, Warehouse 13, Saul Rubinek has joined the cast as a Secret Service agent named Artie Nielsen, who is in charge of the warehouse where much of the film’s paranormal storylines will originate from.

The show may be heading towards the home stretch of its fourth and final season on the Sci Fi Channel, but that doesn’t mean The Powers That Be have completely let go of Ron Moore’s Battlestar Galactica. It seems that rumors are indicating not one, or two, but three original Battlestar Galactica movies are being considered. As with the last and only BSG movie so far, “Razor”, these movies would likely go straight to DVD as well.
The Galactica Sitrep blog has more on the rumors:
On tonight’s live stream, The Doctor and Mrs. Who net radio show reported rumors from their anonymous BATTLESTAR GALACTICA production sources that:
- There will be three-count’em-three BATTLESTAR GALACTICA TV Movies produced after the series wraps. These films will go straight to DVD like RAZOR last year. Many of the current cast are willing to appear in them.
Again, take note that this is a report of a rumor. Basically, a rumor of a rumor, so there is [...]

Wow, check out this video interview over at Entertainment Weekly with Katee Sackhoff, who plays Starbuck on the Sci Fi Channel’s uber depressing Battlestar Galactica. Now I’ve always found Sackhoff’s Starbuck to be very cool and hot in a bad girl sort of way, but I never really thought of her in the glamour model mode. That is, until this photoshoot for EW. The interview itself is about BSG, but she doesn’t really reveal much. Until EW actually releases those pictures they’re snapping of her, here’s what I could grab from the screen.
See the video interview here.

A reader sent me the link to this video clip of the cast of Battlestar Galactica doing the Top 10 on David Letterman’s TV show on Wednesday, last night. It’s, uh, it’s pretty painful to watch. First of all, I don’t think Letterman has even heard of Battlestar Galactica, and why in the world they made the cast show up in character — well, okay, I can sort of understand that. But wow, there were some clunkers on the list. Okay, the Number Six one (”There’s a chance you’ll see me naked”) followed by Tigh (”There’s a chance you’ll see me naked”) was pretty funny, but the rest — wow, try not to cringe.
The poor cast. What the Sci Fi Channel won’t force them to do, huh?
(Thanks to Danny.)

The Sci Fi Channel has officially announced that it has greenlit a two-hour pilot for a possible Battlestar Galactica prequel TV series, to be called Caprica. (I’m just guessing, but they’ll probably back on the BSG name somewhere in the title later.) Caprica will be introduced to the public as a two-hour TV movie, that will also act as a backdoor pilot. If you don’t know what a “backdoor pilot” is, it’s pretty simple: if the movie does well, a series will be commissioned. If not, then they’ll cut their losses with a two-hour movie, without the expense of hiring cast/crew for a series.
More:
“Caprica,” which is set 50 years before the events in the departing “Battlestar,” will begin production in the spring. It hails from the “Battlestar” masterminds Ronald D. Moore and David Eick.
As for “Battlestar,” the series’ final-season premiere will debut online nine hours before it airs on TV.
I have absolutely no idea why they decided to go [...]

Who didn’t sit up and take notice when Grace Park guest-starred on Stargate SG:1 as the very hot Asian girl who had a thing for Daniel Jackson? Then she parlayed that into a major role on the newly minted Battlestar Galactica, which gave her enough street cred to do voice work on games like Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Currently, you can catch Grace on BSG, which enters its final fourth season next month. Here’s our Sci-Fi Babe Spotlight on Grace Park, who, at 5′9″, is probably the tallest Korean woman I’ve ever seen, on film or off.
Grace’s bio from Wikipedia:
Grace Park (born March 14, 1974) is an American-Canadian actress of Korean descent. She is best known as Sharon Valerii (and the various iterations of Number Eight, a humanoid Cylon) on Battlestar Galactica, as well as Shannon Ng in the Canadian television series teen soap Edgemont.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Park and her family moved to Canada when she [...]
