Barbarella is Coming to a Small Screen Near You

Nix June 20, 2012

After failing to get a “Barbarella” reboot made since 2007 (with Robert Rodriguez originally attached to direct), Martha De Laurentiis is now giving the small screen a shot. The producer has teamed up with Gaumont International Television to develop and produce a “Barbarella” TV series, with none other than “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn scheduled to co-produce and direct. Refn called Barbarella “one of the ultimate counter-cultural characters.” Added GIT CEO Katie O’Connell, “We are thrilled to have secured the rights from the Forest estate and are thrilled to be pairing the bold visceral style of Nicolas Refn with the pop culture icon Barbarella.” “Barbarella” started life as a comic book by Jean-Claude Forest, before Jane Fonda floated into space in the 1968 big-screen adaptation. And if you remember the movie for anything beyond a “in her prime” Jane Fonda running around the screen in very little clothing, good for you. Refn is coming off the critically acclaim crime flick… Continue Reading »

Jane Fonda Recommends Kate Bosworth for Barbarella Remake

Nix March 9, 2010

So apparently there was some kind of big awards show or some such in Hollywood over the weekend. You may or may not have heard something about it. In any case, during one of those shindigs that only celebrities are invited to, the original Barbarella herself, Jane Fonda finally met the dishy Kate Bosworth, and made this proclamation: “I want her to do the ‘Barbarella’ sequel!” Obviously no one cares what Jane Fonda wants, and I doubt if this will make any difference about who lands the Barbarella lead, if one even gets made, which at this point is not a sure thing. But having that, it does give me a perfect excuse to post this picture of Kate Bosworth:

John Carpenter on Barbarella? Heigl, Alba, or Miller to Star?

Nix August 13, 2009

Will horror master John Carpenter come down from his horror perch to helm the long-gestating, oft-delayed remake of “Barbarella”? That’s the story currently being pedaled by British tabloid The Sun. On the face of it, it’s not so “out there”, as Carpenter has already directed sci-fi before, most recently the horror-sci-fi hybrid “Ghosts of Mars”. According to The Sun, they have been told by a “Hollywood insider” that Carpenter has already boarded the project as director, and that the studio is now looking at three possible candidates to play Barbarella: Sienna Miller, Jessica Alba, and Katherine Heigl. I could actually see all three women in the role, they definitely have the body and faces for it. Though I doubt if Heigl will even consider it. She seems to be on a “grll power” kick at the moment, and Barbarella and her thrifty wardrobe is probably a step back for her. Alba, on the other hand, might do it, she’s not… Continue Reading »

The Barbarella Remake Moves Forward without Rodriguez

Nix August 7, 2009

For a campy and mostly forgettable sci-fi movie (at least if you’re into sci-fi, not so much if you’re into watching a young Jane Fonda slink around the screen in various stages of half-dress), a lot of people sure seems interested in resurrecting space mercenary Barbarella. The latest news has producer Dino De Laurentiis finally getting this thing ready to shoot. THR reports that Dino De Laurentiis has hired a screenwriter to adapt the 1960s movie starring Fonda as the titular Barbarella for Robert Luketic to direct. Joe Gazzam will pen the screenplay, replacing previous writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who had completed a script that Robert Rodriguez was originally attached to direct with his fiancee Rose McGowan starring as the title character. Rodriguez has since bailed on the project. The original “Barbarella” was directed by Roger Vadim, and based on the comic books by Jean-Claude Forest. Set in “the far future”, the film starred Fonda as a highly… Continue Reading »

Barbarella Remake May Have a New Director

Nix June 2, 2009

And I stress the word “may”, because frankly, like a lot of movies with Robert Rodriguez’s name attached to it at one point or another, a proposed remake of Jane Fonda’s 1968 cheesy sci-fi flick “Barbarella” has been talked about often, but nothing has ever come off it. Now with Rodriguez declaring that he’s permanently off the remake (a problem with the Germans, apparently), has producer Dino De Laurentiis found a replacement? Entertainment Weekly thinks so: Now it seems that director Robert Luketic (Monster-in-Law, Legally Blonde) is working with Dino De Laurentiis’ company (which owns the rights to the original property) to develop the picture with a different studio. “It will be a big intergalactic adventure with a sexy twist,” a source close to the project tells EW.com. Beyond that, details are being kept top secret, including who’ll be cast in Fonda’s old role (Rodriguez’s girlfriend, Rose McGowan, had been attached at one point). If the remake is to go… Continue Reading »
