Man, this is confusing. When Ridley Scott and Fox sent out that shiny press release telling everyone that their newly christened sci-fi movie “Prometheus” used to be the “Alien” prequel, but was now going in a completely new direction, we sorta, you know, believed them. Maybe we shouldn’t have. Or at least, not entirely. According to SkyMovies, there sure seems to be lots of familiar looking “Alien” creatures/designs happening on the Ridley Scott movie. A scooper sent this in to them: “They’ve built the ‘space jockey’ cockpit at Pinewood as seen in the original Alien film, so it definitely takes place in the same world as Alien”, they told us. “Despite that press release that seemed to indicate there were no aliens in the movie, the familiar HR Giger-style aliens do appear. Big ones apparently.” And as for Scott’s comments noting that “keen fans will recognise strands of Alien’s DNA”? It turns out there was the slightest hint of misdirection [...]

20th Century Fox has made it official: Ridley Scott’s long-gestating “Alien” prequel has now been rechristened “Prometheus”, and Noomi Rapace has boarded the project as its female lead, a scientist name Elizabeth Shaw. “While ‘Alien’ was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place,” says Scott, “The keen fan will recognize strands of ‘Alien’s’ DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.” “In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots,” adds Damon Lindelof, who worked with Scott to rewrite an original draft by Jon Spaihts, “I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. Headey, who is said to already be shooting the movie, will play Ma-Ma, a drug-dealing kingpin who Dredd and Cassandra spend much of the movie battling in a tenement building. In other sci-fi news, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” prequel (or is that prequels?) is currently hoping to cast its female lead, a character name Elizabeth Shaw, very soon, and it’s apparently down to two names: “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” star Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron.
The latest update on Ridley Scott and Fox’s “Alien” prequel comes from Vulture, and goes something like this: “Lost” guy Damon Lindelof has turned in his draft of the script, and Fox apparently really likes it. Why? Because it can be shot for relatively cheap (re: no expensive action set pieces to chew up the budget), and it can be shot for a PG-13 rating. The plot of the prequel takes place 35 years before the first “Alien” movie, and the lead in the movie is a “female Colonial Marine general”, whch makes you wonder, so where do the space jockeys fit in there? I thought the prequel would be all about them and not humans? Apparently not so much. Also, Natalie Portman is now rumored to be Fox and Ridley Scott’s top choice for that “general” character. Yes, little Natalie Portman. All five foot of her as a female Colonial Marine general. I guess they haven’t learned anything from [...]

Who didn’t jump and clap for joy when they read Ridley Scott promising us a couple of “really tough, really nasty” prequels to his hit film “Alien”? I know I did. Now as it turns out, Scott’s ambitious project may have stalled because of budget and rating. According to Blastr, Scott wants a “Hard R” for the movie, and needs about $250 million to make it all happen. Movie studio Fox, on the other hands, wants a PG-13 rating, and wants to give Scott less than the $250 million he says he needs. The PG-13 rating is pretty much a hedge on studio’s bets — the lower the rating, the more audience you can pack into a screening, and the more audience you can get, the more money you can make.
