Can’t say it comes as a big surprise, but the news has struck via the cool kids at Shadowlocked that Ridley Scott is powering his prequel to his seminal “Alien”, in the big 3D. Now before you roll your eyes and call this whole 3D thing a fad, you better stop and just get used to it scooter, 3D rules and it’s here to stay.
“Star Wars” and “Alien” art director Roger Christian, practically glowing with Sci-Fi street cred, spoke to the Shadow guys about the upcoming Alien -1 and immediately spilled the 3D beans.
“Ridley’s doing the next Alien in 3D.”
There’s been a few “Alien” movies in the past few years that have sunk into the “B Movie” category I’m afraid. Asked if Ridley will set the ship straight again, Christian responded,
“I do. Ridley told me some of his ideas when we were here in Toronto. He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped [...]

Ridley Scott is looking forward to doing an “Alien” sequel. Or, er, prequel. Speaking to Empire, the director gives out a little bit more detail about the setting for his “Alien” movie, which he has boarded to direct after 20th Century Fox bulked at having someone else take over the reigns.
Scott tells Empire:
“It’s a brand new box of tricks. We know what the road map is, and the screenplay is now being put on paper. The prequel will be a while ago. It’s very difficult to put a year on Alien, but [for example] if Alien was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place thirty years prior.
I never thought I’d look forward to a sequel. But a prequel is kind of interesting. I’m looking forward to doing that.”
For those wondering, the prequel most likely won’t have anything to do with those giant aliens seen at the beginning of the first movie.
Here’s the trailer [...]

It looks like Twentieth Century Fox has gotten its way. The studio balked when a fifth “Alien” movie was brought to it with a director not named Ridley Scott attached, and said it wouldn’t front the bill for the movie unless Scott changed his mind. Hey, who says the studio doesn’t have the power to make things happen? Variety now reports that Scott has indeed been attached to take over the directorial chores on the prequel, which will now move forward.
The trade also reports that sci-fi thriller wunderkind Jon Spaihts has been hired to pen the script, which will take place before the events of the 1979 original “Alien” movie, the last time Scott directed an installment in the franchise, which counts four entries so far. In the original, the crew of a commercial towing ship called Nostromo is returning to Earth when it is awakened and sent to check out a distress signal from a nearby alien planet. They [...]

If and when they end up finally making another “Alien” movie (and at this point, that’s not entirely a sure thing), you probably shouldn’t expect to see Sigourney Weaver reprise her Ripley character in it. And it won’t be because she doesn’t want to be in it, it’s just that the new “Alien” movie is supposed to be a prequel that takes place before the events of the original “Alien” movie, so that would make Ripley’s appearance sort of illogical.
Weaver told SciFiSquad pretty much the same thing:
Well, I don’t think that Ripley could appear in an Alien prequel because she doesn’t have any access to the creature until the first Alien. But Ridley (Scott) is producing it and that makes me happy. I wasn’t thrilled with the whole Alien Vs. Predator thing. I never saw them, but one of the reasons I died in (Alien) 3 was to not have anything to do with those (laughs). Just because, you [...]

Looks like that confirmed “Alien” prequel has hit a road bump. According to the guys over at The Playlist, Fox studios is unwilling to greenlight another “Alien” movie without Ridley Scott doing more than just producing, i.e. they want Scott to actually direct it, and is apparently unwilling to hand over the property to an unknown commercial director in Carl Erik Rinsch, who may or may not have gotten the job based on the fact that he’s dating Ridley Scott’s daughter Jordan. Or at least that’s part of the sordid details.
Here’s more:
Fox obviously owns the property and perhaps they’re even showing owner’s remorse from having approved the legacy tarnishing ‘AVP’ series and want Scott to do it up right and not just assign the gig to one of his trusted lieutenants? Sources at Fox tell EW the studio is not “interested in green lighting the project unless Scott directs himself.”
I would link to the EW article, but it doesn’t seem [...]

Collider has confirmed Bloody Disgustings earlier report that Carl Rinsch will be directing a Ridley and Tony Scott produced prequel to the Alien series of films. Collider has Tony Scott himself saying it’s on the way. The first Alien came out in 79 and was the first adult movie I ever saw ( I snuck in). For those of you living under the rock that lives under the rock, the first Alien starred Sigourney Weaver and kicked all kinds of ass. If you haven’t seen it for some strange reason, just go now and see it. I’ll wait.
I wasn’t kidding was I? Amazing stuff. You hardly see the adult Alien, I mean I think you see the cat more than that slimy, sneaky beast. The director of the upcoming prequel is turbo talented and Ridley and Tony are just not going to see any more damage done to Ridley’s original. Put this one in the bank. We’ll be all over [...]

Both the Predator and Alien franchises have gotten some rough treatment lately. Everything since Alien 4 has been of dubious quality. This angers me. You can say with confidence that both these beasties lurk at the pinnacle of our Sci-Fi monster movie pantheon. We’ve reported on a rumour previously that Ridley Scott was mulling over another “Alien” movie but this time the Force is stronger young Jedis. Bloody Disgusting has a source that says Ridley and Tony Scott want to go back to the roots of what made Alien great and do an origin story. One Alien on a starship, newly hatched, just looking for something to love. It’s a feel good kind of story. Carl Rinsch, who does some work for Tony will be behind the camera and 20th Century Fox will do the money thing. Now this is just a rumour of course, so don’t get all hot and bothered just yet. It has a good feeling though.

Fox Co-chairman Tom Rothman talked with IESB at the “Wolverine” premiere in Tempe, Arizona and hinted that something may be in the works to return “Alien” back to it’s creator Ridley Scott and get the series back on track.
“Ridley Scott, Ridley is right now working on Robin Hood, but I think he’s toying with the idea and that would be great for us. I mean, it’s always been a matter of, really, if you can get the originator to do it that would be the greatest thing, so I’ve got my fingers crossed, all of them.“
This series needs a reboot more than just about anything. An Alien movie cast in the mould of the original or the sequel would be a license to print money. Thanks BloodyDisgusting.

Sigourney Weaver once famously declared that what the “Alien” franchise needed was no guns. This, I believe, was coming on the heels of James Cameron’s mega hit “Aliens”, which gave Ripley, as well as those too awesome for words space Marines, more guns then they could handle. Weaver got her wish in “Alien 3″ (directed by a then-fledgling David Fincher) — no guns. The film, needless to say, bombed like nothing that has ever bombed before. So the guns came back for part four — the less-than-successful (although I enjoyed it myself) “Alien: Resurrection”.
Now, with speculation that an “Alien 5″ is somewhere on the horizon, MTV got Weaver to talk about possibly bringing the franchise back, and she had some interesting things to say about it. And of course by “interesting” I mean I hope no one asks her what to do with “Alien 5″, because I still don’t think Sigourney Weaver has any idea why people love the [...]

Wow, can you believe that Sigourney Weaver is going to turn 60 in October? Ellen Ripley of “Alien”, “Aliens”, and the other two (that aren’t really worth mentioning) sequels fame? Yup, it’s true. And in an interview with OK! Magazine, Weaver is floating the idea of coming back as her most famous character, that of Ellen Ripley, in a fifth installment of the popular “Alien” franchise. And hey, why not? Harrison Ford is what, 120, and he’s back as Indiana Jones. Likewise with Rocky, Rambo, and John McClane.
From OK Magazine:
The Hollywood actress is considering resurrecting her most famous character – shaven-headed, muscle-bound Alien heroine Ellen Ripley.
“I would definitely do another if I had a director like Ridley Scott and we had a good idea,” she says of the classic sci-fi movie franchise. “Ridley is enthusiastic about it.”
You know, I would like to see this. “Alien: Resurrection” wasn’t the best of the best, but it had a pretty nifty idea for [...]
