If you’re one of those people who hates the idea of Hollywood’s live-action white-washing of Katsuhiro Ohtomo’s “Akria”, then this is definitely good news to you. THR reports that Warner Bros. has, once again, put a halt to their production of “Akira”, which is currently set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. The issue? It’s all about the CHA-CHING, of course: Collet-Serra already had halved the budget from the incarnation that Albert Hughes was going to direct. He now is working on a budget in the $90 million range. But with only Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) signed on to star, and Kristen Stewart, Ken Watanabe and Helena Bonham Carter in various stages of dealmaking, the studio feels that the price tag is still too high for a sci-fi project with that level of star wattage. The goal, says an insider, is to bring the budget down to between $60 million and $70 million. However, another source close to the production [...]

So, first of all, Kaneda’s gotten himself a job. Yes, a job. And not just a job, the kid is all grown up and owning property now. And not just any property, but a business. Sheesh. One day he’s a snot-nosed gangbanger, and the next day he’s running a joint. What’s this world coming to? The world of Warner Bros.’ live-action “Akira”, that’s what. Via Bleeding Cool, check out the casting call for “Akira”, which features some juicy plot details about the upcoming movie: Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother, Tetsuo, is abducted by government agents led by The Colonel. Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join with Ky Reed and her underground movement who are intent on revealing to the world what truly happened to New York City thirty years ago when it was destroyed. Kaneda believes their theories to be ludicrous but after finding his brother again, is [...]

If, for some reason, you were still holding out hope that at least one major character in Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Akira” will maintain their Japanese roots, you can probably stop holding your breath now, because it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen, especially now that Warner Bros. is said to be in talks with “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart (who is probably one of the most pale girl I’ve ever seen in the movies) to join the cast, playing the role of Kei, the film’s psychic medium/rebel. If she signs on, Stewart would be joining “Tron: Legacy’s” Garrett Hedlund, who is already onboard to play Kaneda, the gang leader/hero of “Akira”. Names like Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter have also been rumored for roles in the film, with Oldman playing the Colonel.
Yikes. It looks like a Hollywood live-action version of “Akira” will happen after all. Who would have thunk it? After lots of starts and stops and more starts and stops, the film is finally gearing up for production with a director and now, star. Well, one of the stars, anyway. As anyone familiar with the Japanese source material knows, “Akira” is about two men — Kaneda and Tetsuo. According to Variety, “Tron: Legacy’s” Garrett Hedlund is currently in negotiations for one of the roles, presumably that of Kaneda. You know, the one without the powers? Tetsuo, the one with the powers, is still uncast, though with Hedlund in the fold, it won’t be too long before we learn who will be destroying Neo Tokyo — er, I mean, New Manhattan. Jaume Collet-Serra will direct the film, which will follow the premise of the original manga and anime, with biker gang leader Kaneda trying to save his buddy Tetsuo from military [...]

Sorry, haters of the American “Akira” — it ain’t dead yet. In fact, it’s very much alive, with Variety reporting that Warner Bros. has officially given the greenlight to the movie, with an early 2012 start date on the horizon. Jaume Collet-Serra will direct, with “Tron: Legacy’s” Garrett Hedlund the frontrunner for one of the two male leads. (Yes, this means the heroes will both be white.) Collet-Serra, who previously directed the Liam Neeson actioner “Unknown”, will have $90 million to work with. A tiny sum given the chaos he’s going to have to orchestrate if the film even wants to be remotely faithful to the Katsuhiro Otomo anime. Otomo, by the by, will stay on as a producer on the American live-action version. Some changes in said version includes transplanting the story from “Neo Tokyo” to “New Manhattan”.

This is just the latest strike against the Warner Bros. movie, which recently took fire from Asian-American communities when it decided to “white-wash” the movie with an all-Caucasian cast, along with setting the film in a “New Manhattan”. Minus a leading man and a director, the WB is expected to start looking for a replacement. I guess it’s up to you and how you’re looking at Warner Bros. determination to make an “Akira” live-action with, from the looks of it, an all-Caucasian cast. Joblo reports that Keanu Reeves, who was recently offered the lead role of Kaneda in the movie, has turned down the offer and moved on. Up next for The One? Playing a half-Japanese Samurai in “47 Ronin”, which features a mostly Japanese case. Warner Bros., though, sounds determined to still make “Akira”. Maybe. Well, this news will either have you jumping for joy or running to find the first closet to hide in and scream out your lungs. Here it is: Keanu Reeves is currently in talks to play Kaneda in “Akira”. No deal has been made yet, and no offer has been extended, but it’s looking pretty good that Reeves might end up being the first big name to sign up to the Albert Hughes-directed sci-fi project. It seems Reeves has a thing for Japanese properties. He’s already shooting a Samurai movie called “47 Ronin” where he’ll be playing a half-Japanese/Caucasian Samurai, and he’s got that “Cowboy Bebop” movie in development. And now he might just be adding “Akira” to his Japanese-themed plate. Happy? Sad? Somewhere in-between?

For those who didn’t think an “Akira” live-action Hollywood-backed movie would ever come to pass, join the club. I didn’t think it would actually happen, too, but according to this Deadline article, it’s not only actually, possibly happening, but Warner Bros. is already looking at an August start date. Now all they have to do is cast it. The storyline for the American version will transplant the action to “New Manhattan”, but strangely enough, the characters will remain Japanese … or at least, in name only, given the shortlist of A-list actors the studio and director Albert Hughes are currently eyeballing to play Kaneda and Tetsuo. Actors being looked at by the studio for Tetsuo include Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy. They have all been given the new draft of the script by “Harry Potter” writer Steve Kloves. Meanwhile, actors up for the pivotal Kaneda include Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix. In [...]

Usually they just post celebrity pictures, don’t they? Anyways, here’s the word from JJ: James Franco is in talks to star as the lead role Kaneda in the live action feature-film Akira, JustJared.com has exclusively confirmed. The flick will be based off of anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s six-volume cyberpunk manga (Japanese word for comics). The film is set in New Manhattan, where the leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment. Obviously if Franco lands the gig, you can kiss teenager Kaneda goodbye. The Hughes brothers have been attached to direct for some time, with Leonardo DiCaprio’s shingle producing. If this thing ever gets made, what are the chances we’ll see this scene play out in live-action?

Oh, Akira, will we ever see you on the big-screen? I honestly don’t know, because this has the makings of a very expensive live-action movie. Expensive, expansive, and complex as hell to translate to an audience that have grown up on “Two and a Half Men”. But hey, they’re giving it a shot, and I guess that’s a good thing. Now the latest word on the long-gestating “Akira” live-action movie is that former teen idol Zac Efron has been offered the lead in the movie, which has been under development at Warner Bros. (through Leonardo DiCaprio’s produciton company) under the Hughes Brothers (“Book of Eli”). Of course, this is just a rumor, but how would you feel about Zac Efron as the lead in “Akira”? Previous “Akira” news had the film being a possible PG-13 two-parter.

Akira lives! Again! Ahem. According to NYMag’s Vulture blog, the brothers Hughes (that would be Allen and Albert, FYI) are currently in negotiations with Warner Bros. to helm the studio’s sure-to-be expensive and epic live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s seminal manga/anime “Akira”, which recently got a major boost when Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way came onboard as producers. The Hughes brothers, of course, recently turned in the post-apocalyptic “Book of Eli” for the studio, so they’re no stranger to apocalyptic action. It’s been known for a while now that an “Akira” movie would consist of two films, which is much more preferable than trying to squeeze it all into one movie. Also according to Vulture, expect an official announcement about the Hughes and “Akira” later this week. I would normally use this space to tell you what “Akira” is all about, but frankly, if you don’t already know, I ain’t gonna waste my breath telling you, cause if you don’t already [...]

A live action “Akira” movie has been floating around in the hopes of studio execs for some time now with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company putting it together for Warner. It was originally supposedly fast tracked for a big budget release this summer. Since we just said goodbye to summer I’m thinking there was a hitch. However, sources are now pushing the news that Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, lately of the excellent Children of Men and Iron Man are seriously at work on the project. Akira is a high concept sci-fi set in a super future new Tokyo, years after a nuke obliterated the old one. A small group of bikers must defend the city against a fellow biker whose psychic powers are awakened. Apparently the new script moves all this to Manhattan. Leave it in Tokyo I say. There’s no better place for a Science Fiction movie than Tokyo. I haven’t seen Akira, but I’m about to. [...]
