A couple of sci-fi movie news today: the first has Gerard Butler and director Antoine Fuqua circling the Tobey Maguire-produced “Afterburn”, based on the Red 5 Comics comic book released a few years ago. Set in a post-apocalyptic world that has been scorched by massive solar flares, the movie follows a group of treasure hunters sent to retrieve items inside the mutated zones. Fuqua, who previously directed “Training Day”, is looking to direct. Tobey Maguire will still produce. Meanwhile, “Taken” director Pierre Morel is preparing to direct the Sam Raimi-produced “EDF: Earth Defense Force”, about yet another invasion of planet Earth by bad, bad aliens. Man, what is the deal with these aliens? Leave us alone already! We don’t have what you need! (Mostly.) Over at “Dune” land, it looks like rumor has Paramount now giving up on remaking the Frank Herbert book after four years of development, with a variety of big-name directors attached at one point or another, [...]

I love me a good old-fashion post-apocalyptic movie. Just ask anyone who knows me. Heck, I’m even one of the few people that liked Kevin Costner’s “Waterworld” and “The Postman”. Yes, I liked both movies. So what of it? The latest post-apocalyptic movie headed to the big screen is “Afterburn”, based on a comic book (pictured, below) by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood from new comics company Red 5 Comics. And none other than Tobey Maguire (pictured, left), Spider-Man himself, is planning on ushering the comics into a movie, and will be producing with partner Neal Moritz. More: The book, whose first issue hit stands in January, is a sci-fi adventure set against the backdrop of a postapocalyptic Earth, whose Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated from radiation and fallout. The story revolves around a group of treasure hunters who for the right price extract such objects as the Mona Lisa, the [...]
